TOURISM NOOSA

A very warm welcome to our 15th annual Noosa Long Weekend Festival. This is a special anniversary year. So come and celebrate with us from our Friday opening street parade and beach spectacular to the last Sunday when we are hosting the Italian Long Lunch at the Waterfront and Keith Potger AO (original member of The Seekers) is presenting an up close and personal Dinner Show at the Boathouse. As usual the Festival would not be possible without our outstanding volunteers, dressed this year in gold and black, our dedicated and hard-working Festival Director and our office staff, and all the other wonderful people who make up our team during and before the Festival.

I owe a deep debt to the phenomenal dedication of our management committee who go the extra yards to make the Festival a reality. Our wonderfully generous Patrons, our very supportive Festival Sponsors and our Friends of the Festival are an integral and very important part of our team. Finally, I want to thank all those other organisations and cultural partners who join with us to put on the best show in town. Thank you one and all for your support.

Please come and say hello, bring your friends and family, and have a fantastic time.

Ten incredible days and nights. Presenting the best of the best in terms of artists, performers, authors, visual arts, film, food and fun! We are ecstatic about how exciting our 2016 festival event program is, and truly there is something for all ages, tastes and price ranges on offer in this year’s program.

Our 2016 festival will kick off with an exciting free Community event, namely Carnivale Infusion Parade, which includes a wonderful array of street performers, musicians, circus performers, jugglers, dancers, multiple community groups participation, and an abundance of feathers. A befitting finale to this parade is in store, as we invite spectators on to Noosa Main Beach for a fantastic Twilight Skydiving Display with super-hero jumpers soft landing on the sand.

So do join us for this exciting opening event on Hastings Street, Friday 15th July at 5pm.

There are over 80 ticketed and non-ticketed events in this year’s program, with in excess of 220 artists and special guests joining us for NLWF 2016.

Event tickets are bound to sell-out quickly so we remind you, ‘snooze and you lose’. Secure your event tickets now!

We look forward to you joining us in celebration from 15-24 July for our 15th Anniversary spectacular NLWF 2016.

Enjoy!

Ian MackellarFestival Director Noosa Long Weekend Festival

“I am beyond excited about the amazing 2016 program for this year’s Noosa Long Weekend Festival and feel extremely honoured to serve as Festival Ambassador for this wonderful event as it celebrates its 15th year. NLWF is one of my very favourite annual festivals in Queensland and each year it has been with great anticipation and enthusiasm that I have made the beautiful drive up from Brisbane to Noosa to bask in the festival’s exciting vibe and experience the variety

of exceptional arts, cultural and culinary offerings it serves up in abundance.

I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to promote this unique festival through my role as the 2016 ambassador and hope that it will enjoy record-breaking numbers this year, as this is truly one of the Sunshine State’s best events that I encourage everyone to place on their must-do list for 2016.

Hope to see you all in July!”

‘Visions of Earth’ is inspired by the greatest muse of all, the earth and its natural wonders. Indigenous culture, with its spiritual connection to land and nature, flickers in the hearts of this concert’s Australian composers, with Sculthorpe’s shimmering strings and his protégé Barton conjuring mystical stories of our unique island.

This evocative program explores these primal notions, with stunning music performed by Southern Cross Soloists alongside the master of the didgeridoo, William Barton.

William Barton, DidgeridooWilliam Barton (performer/composer) has been playing didgeridoo for over 20 years and first learnt the instrument in Mount Isa in far northwestern Queensland. He has been touring internationally since he was 15 years old, with his first performance with a professional orchestra as soloist at 17.

In 2012, he won an ARIA award for best classical album with Kalkadungu.

NOOSA LONG WEEKEND FESTIVAL IN ASSOCIATION WITH NOOSA FEDERATION OF THE ARTS PRESENT

DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND AWARD 2016Will we find the next Dame Joan Sutherland? This Award was initiated by the Noosa Federation of the Arts to showcase the cream of young opera singers. Six finalists, chosen nationwide, will contest the Dame Joan Sutherland Award on July 22nd as part of the Noosa Long Weekend. They have already survived the auditions held in Brisbane in June, now they will take part in the Finals. The Award is open to singers from 20 to 34 years of age in all categories from soprano to bass, and one lucky person will take home first prize of $15,000.

Chairman of the Noosa Federation of the Arts, Juanita Overson, said “the prize money helps to further their careers, whether it be coaching, manuscripts, linguistics or assistance with other competitions. So many of our winners have made it on the national and international operatic stages, helped by our Award”.

A week after Mirusia Louwerse won she was contracted to Andre Rieu. People’s Choice, Kang Wang, is currently contracted to the New York Met. And our last winner, mezzo Jade Moffat is busy making a name for herself on the London stage.

Jade Moffat pictured with Renee Fleming “The winner of 2014 Award, mezzo Jade Moffat, is now studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She recently sang for Renee Fleming”.

ADDITIONALThe final (ever) two performances of Once Were Leaders will be performed at NWLF 2016

A stalwart of political satire, funnyman Max Gillies brings his show to NLWF this July, cataloguing some of his most infamous characters in Once Were Leaders. Is Australia suffering a leadership deficit? There was a time when politicians could inspire us. But were they really better than the current crop or has our perception benefited from the passage of time? Max Gillies has been a keen observer of the political combat zone for half a century. His fascination with the ups and downs of political leadership has seen him parody everyone from Hawke to Thatcher and many more.Once Max used to apply make-up, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order to disguise himself. He doesn’t have those bits and pieces anymore. But he has accumulated a rich collection of caricatures. Once Were Leaders sees Max share his memories of a life spent on the fringes of power, mining the archives for his favourite game changing speeches.Max Gillies portrays the following characters during the show:• Bob Hawke • Paul Keating • Graham Richardson • Kevin Rudd • John Howard

• Malcolm Fraser • Margaret Thatcher (UK) • Ronald Reagan (US) • Queen Elizabeth • Robert Menzies

CHALLENGES TO THE PRACTICAL WORKINGS OF DEMOCRACYYou might just be able to put up with them one at a time, but together, they are a real challenge to the practical workings of democracy. They are: –• Communication of policy via the

‘30 second grab’;• The changing nature of ‘news’ -

the 24 hours news cycle and the pressure this imposes on politicians and commentators;

• Policy debate reduced to 140 letters of a Twitter feed;

• The impact of social media; • The insidious effect of overblown

political correctness.

The Panel:Sharri MarksonJournalist and Senior Media Writer – The Australian.

Hon Dr Gary Johns Adjunct Professor at QUT Business School and a commentator.

Chris KennyAustralian political commentator, author and former political adviser.

Graham Young Chief editor and publisher of On Line Opinion, and Executive Director of the Australian Institute for Progress.

CAN ISIS BE DEFEATED?A must-listen discussion about Islamic State involving seven key questions — who are its members, how did they become so powerful, why do people join them, what do they want, can it be said that Isis is somebody’s fault, how can they be defeated and how should we respond to attacks like those in Paris?

The Panel:Greg Sheridan Australian foreign affairs journalist and commentator. Tom Switzer Australian columnist and foreign policy analyst; editor of American Review and presenter of the Between the Lines program aired on Radio National.

David Martin Jones Associate Professor and Reader at the School of Political Science and International Studies, University of Queensland. His research expertise includes International Security, Australian Defence Policy and International Terrorism.

LOCAL AUTHORS IN CONVERSATION

No doubt it is some combination of all of the above. In our local author’s forum, three of SE Queensland’s talented authors will give us their thoughts on the importance of ‘place’ in their writing.

Join Annah Faulkner, Susan Johnson and Inga Simpson for this conversation as they discuss influence of their own locations in the development of settings and subject matter.

There is certain to be some fascinating author insights into their writings.

Annah FaulknerAnnah Faulkner’s debut novel, The Beloved, won the Kibble Literary Award, the Queensland Premier’s Literary Award for an Emerging Queensland Author, and was shortlisted for the 2013 Miles

Franklin Award. Last Day in the Dynamite Factory is her second novel.

Susan Johnson Susan Johnson’s novel The Landing observes what it is to be human and to love: the betrayals, the long and the short alliances, the disappointments and the joys. In 2010, Susan returned from ten years in London and is a feature writer at Q weekend magazine.

Inga Simpson Inga Simpson began her career as a professional writer for government before gaining a PhD in creative writing. Her first novel Mr Wigg was followed by Nest in 2014, subsequently long listed for the 2015 Miles Franklin Award. Her new work is Where the Trees Were.

What is it that allows a book to resonate with its readers? Plot, character, location, style?

GRAVITASInspired by the choreographic work of Penelope Mullen’s ‘Danse Noir’ which premiered in Brisbane 2014, Gravitas was born.Join Penelope ‘In Conversation’ about the making of Gravitas followed by a screening of this enthralling art-dance short film.

While observing Penelope rehearse the live dance work, renowned author Stephen Schofield spontaneously penned evocative words in which he described the spirit and articulation of the dancers as they traversed the space with a sense of gravitas.

And so emerged Gravitas, a film featuring extraordinary dancers captured by film makers Richard Keenan and Guy Calaf. Co-Produced by Louise Howden – Smith and conceived and choreographed by Penelope Mullen.

Filmed in the crystal caves at Yanchep, WA, the film explores the reverence one feels when immersed within the grandeur of nature’s architecture.

As artistic director of the world-renowned Bangarra Dance Theatre, he has spent over twenty years interpreting the stories of Indigenous Australians for global stages. Now Page brings Bangarra’s outstanding dance work Spear to the screen.

THE HEAT

THE HEATWyatt needs a job. A bank job would be nice, or a security van hold-up. As long as he doesn’t have to work with cocky idiots and strung-out meth-heads like the Pepper brothers. That’s the sort of miscalculation that buys you the wrong kind of time.

So he contacts a man who in the past put him on the right kind of heist. And finds himself in Noosa, stealing a painting for Hannah Sten. He knows how it’s done: case the premises, set up escape routes and failsafes, get in and get out with the goods unrecognised. Make a good plan; back it up with another. And be very, very careful.

But who is his client? Who else wants that painting? Sometimes, being very careful is not enough.

GARRY DISHERGarry Disher has published almost fifty titles - fiction, children’s books, anthologies, textbooks, the Wyatt thrillers and the Mornington Peninsula mysteries. He has won numerous awards, including the German Crime Prize (twice) and two Ned Kelly Best Crime novel awards, for Chain of Evidence (2007) and Wyatt (2010). Garry lives on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

BEYOND BELIEFHear one of Australia’s most respected authors and social researchers Hugh Mackay talk about his new book, Beyond Belief: How we find meaning, with or without religion. At a time when 61 percent of Australians still identify as Christian but only 8 percent attend church weekly, Mackay tackles one of the big questions about contemporary Australia: how do we find our sense of meaning and purpose when religious faith and practice are in such sharp decline? (And why are enrolments at church schools skyrocketing?)

He draws on research suggesting that our quest for a meaningful life depends on believing in something ‘greater than ourselves’ and explores what that ‘something’ might be for today’s Australians.

Hugh will be interviewed by Phil Brown. Arts Editor - The Courier-Mail, Deputy Editor - CANVAS, News Queensland.

HUGH MACKAY Social researcher and the author of seventeen books - eleven in the field of social analysis and ethics, and six novels.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society and has been awarded honorary doctorates by Charles Sturt, Macquarie, New South Wales and Western Sydney universities. In 2015, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. He lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

SPIRITS OF THE GHANBestselling Australian author Judy Nunn AM has based many of her novels in remote locations across Australia. When travelling on The Ghan three years ago with husband, author Bruce Venables, she was instantly inspired.Spirits of the Ghan tells the tale of two people involved in completing The Ghan: Jess Manning, an indigenous Australian whose role as negotiator between the Elders and the railway has earnt her respect amongst all involved with the project, and Matthew Witherton, a senior surveyor overseeing the construction of the line. When their paths finally cross, their respective cultures collide to reveal a mystery that demands attention, and could well affect the completion of the mighty railway.

JUDY NUNN AMJudy Nunn’s career has been long, illustrious and multifaceted. After combining her internationally successful acting career with scriptwriting for television and radio, Judy decided in the 90s to turn her hand to prose.

Her first three novels, The Glitter Game, Centre Stage and Araluen, set respectively in the worlds of television, theatre and film, became instant bestsellers, and the rest is history, quite literally in fact.

In 2015 Judy was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her ‘significant service to the performing arts as a scriptwriter and actor of stage and screen, and to literature as an author’.

Pianist/singer/songwriter David Bentley digs deep to deliver a smoky blend of bluesy jazz that draws a wide range of influences from sophisticated jazz trios to New Orleans street beats. It’s a fusion of jazz standards, hip grooves, original songs and romping rhythm ‘n’ blues that evolves organically as the night unfolds.

The David Bentley Trio – aka DB3 – features the nimble and inventive acoustic bass playing of Andrew Shaw along with the savvy sax of Ric Halstead.
