Dear Volunteers, Board of Directors, Partners, Staff, and Friends,

As a baby boomer and a child of the ’50s, I grew up in The Bronx, New York. In my world I was introduced to African Americans and Puerto Riccans when intergration in 1958 opened the doors for all children to get an equal education. My fellow classmates, from the projects across from where I was destined to go to high school, James Monroe, were bused into P.S. 102, my school, on Archer Avenue in The Bronx. In 1954, when I was two years old, I had two African American nursey school teachers. So, I didn’t realize or understand the social change that was transforming society until I learned about it years later.

I always thought that it was normal to believe that all children, except the little 10-year-old boy who came from Texas and into our classroom who talked funny, were the same as I. But I did at the earliest age realize that children of color, even though they lived all around me in adjouning neighborhoods, were not allowed to live in Parkchester, the community where I grew up. While that was the normal fact of life, I never understoond the reasons for it, and invited my friends to come visit. They, as 9- and 10-year-olds, would walk over two miles to come and play with me. That act of courage always amazed me and even then it seemed wrong that they had to walk so far to play with their classmate.

Today as Founder and President of To Love Children, I have traveled to Africa twice and, since the age of 18, to 43 countries of the world. I now live in Europe and have friends from literally around the globe. TLC has our first international office, in Uganda. Today I can act on what I know is right and today I want to point out a lesson in geography as part of our educational mission to educate and inform.

There are many map projections and many reasons for maps being drawn flat, even though the world looks a little more like an orange with a bulge in the middle. I understand why maps are flat, as globes are not as convenient or available. However, the erroneous teaching comes when the flat maps are combined with a strong Eurocentric teaching, a teaching that distorted my earliest view of the significance of the role that Africa plays, or should play, in the world.

I was taught that Africa was emerging but I didn’t quite understand, in the 7th grade, what it was emerging into. The terms ’developed’ and ’developing’ weren’t used in the early ‘60s. Instead, the term used was the ’Third World’. The ‘60s was a time of independence for many

Size Matters in Geography

countries of Africa. There seemed to be a lot of hope and promise. But the world then became deaf and mute when it came to Africa, except for when events like the Cold War, through a proxy war, brought it to the world’s attention, or when a famine that swept Biafra took the headlines, or with the advent of awareness of HIV/AIDS and poverty. It seemed like no one was speaking to the magnificence that was this continent of Africa, with its many diverse people, tribes, countries, and cultures.

Some basic geographic facts about Africa will show its importance; in geography size matters. At least that’s how it seems to me when discussing the role of Africa and her many nations in world events. Africa covers 11,707,000 square miles, is surrounded by two major oceans, and hosts over 50 countries. It straddles the equator, encompassing parts of both the northern and southern hemispheres, and, as the second-largest land mass in the world, comes nowhere close to having the influence in the world that is should.

Politics, history, culture, international relations, and a myriad of other factors have given Africa and its millions of diverse people a different developmental path from other parts of the world. As the birth place of humanity’s most ancient civilization, as well being the home of one of the world’s largest rainforests and famous rivers such as the Congo and Nile, Africa is rich in resources, music, and an understanding of life. This is evident in the African proverbs we use everyday, unaware of their sources, like, “It takes a village to raise a child.” It seems to me that Africa should be a major topic of discussion in the path humanity is taking, and I have superfi-cially named only a handful of the contributions the people of African have made to the world. If there was a direct relationship between geographic size and international relations, then Africa would be considered a much more important place.

To Love Children is working on an African Awareness campaign that will help bring the world’s attention to Africa’s significance and her contributions to the world, which are commensurate with her size. It will highlight Africa’s contributions to the world and her people in the areas of music, geography, history, literature, culture, language, customs and so much more . In my first visit to South Africa and the African continent in 1997, I wrote a poem that describes a little of what Africa means to me. Africa has made a profound change in my life and I want to be able to share a little of what I see. Thank you for your attention, and for reading a little of the personal impact my life has on my work, and my work on my life.

Sincerely,

David Kenneth Waldman Founder/ President/ CEO

Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. The Indian Ocean is on the left, the Atlantic on the right.

Land of the Karoo of immense life and majesty. The southern mountain range stops here. Birds mate for life here.

Flora and Fauna are much different, and the sunsets are magnificent.

Contrasts between the two great oceans that reside off the coast, mirror the contrasts of the different people that now boast of peace and harmony.

Started a new that only a short while ago few would have imagined.

This land of Karoo—of immense life and majesty, South Africa.

Spotlight on….The Executive Director’s Place

In the first of what will now be a monthly column, I want to take a few minutes to introduce myself in more detail. I grew up as the youngest of four children in St. Paul, Minnesota. I now live with my husband and two-year-old son just a few miles from my childhood home. There was a large age gap between my much older siblings and me, which allowed my parents to be in a better financial place when I was born. Because of this, and even more so because of their belief in the power of education, I was sent to private schools from the ages of five through 18, when I graduated high school. I then attended an all-girls private college where I received Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Ethical Philosophy. I later went on to receive my Master’s degree in Counseling.

In addition to the importance of education, I was taught growing up that as a girl I could do anything that I wanted to and that I should never listen to anyone who said differently. However, as we know, these values are not taught to all girls around the world and that, instead, many are taught that they are, and should be, treated as second-rate citizens compared to their brothers and other males in the family. They are kept from getting an education or knowing the most basic rights that all human beings should have. This injustice is what drives me and everyone that is a part of To Love Children to do the work that we are doing.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of our dedicated volunters and partners who have helped to make the past three years so successful for To Love Children. We have come a long way in developing programs and conducting outreach to partners and individuals in the coun-tries we are working in. We are so grateful for all the support that we have received.

However, the harder work is now ahead of us – creating ways to sustain those programs finan-cially, so that we can continue to make an impact for girls around the world. Our Board of Directors and senior management team have a renewed focus on fundraising and the creation of self-sustaining methods for our work.

But, we cannot do this work alone. We need each and every one of you to help us spread the word about what we are trying to do and the outcomes that we are achieving. We need all of you to help us grow our mailing list, find new partners and donors, and create ways to support our work, which in turn, will allow us to have more resources to share with our partner organi-zations and all those around the world in need of our help. So I am asking you to reflect on the privileges that you may have received growing up or have now, and to renew your commitment to help us help the girls around the world who aren’t as lucky as we have been.

If you are interested in working more closely on any of our current projects or simply have names of your family and friends who would like to receive future newsletters, please contact me. Again, with your help, To Love Children can continue to flourish and do even greater work in the coming years.

Thank you!

Katie Patricelli

For everything there is a season, And a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to throw away stones, And a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to seek, and a time to lose; A time to keep, and a time to throw away; A time to tear, and a time to sew; A time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate, A time for war, and a time for peace. --Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8

TLC Roundtable Meet Our New Partner

Scott MacLennan, FounderOF Mountain Fundwww.Mountainfund.org

Scott MacLennan, on his organization, Mountain Fund:

“We get a lot of traffic from the outdoor enthusiast crowd where we focus most of our market-ing. What we have found regarding that group of people (climbers, hikers and trekkers) is that they tend to be well-educated, affluent and drawn to social change. Most have traveled to de-veloping countries and witnessed the need they have first hand. Many, in fact, have come home to start nonprofit organizations, as have at least half of the groups we work for now, myself included, of course.

It is ironic that To Love Children is looking at micro credit, as I am too. I have one small micro credit program in Cusco, Peru that I personally participate in. It is very informal; however, and we make small loans to street vendors so they can make their daily supply purchases for their carts. We collect our loans and make new ones each day. It enables our clients to continue to have their street carts stocked and to sell goods and support their families.

I have also been asked to look into a program for Tanzania. One of my organizations, IMEC, has an office there where they assist men (almost all are men) who work as porters on Mt. Kilimanjaro. We have been asked to investigate the possibility of a credit program that would allow some of these people to purchase a plot of land or a cow, etc., as a way to move out of the porter business, which is hard work for young, strong men, and enable them to ’retire’, if you will, from that line of work into farming or small businesses. After about ten years working as a porter, many of these men are physically broken and have a hard time finding a job they can do that doesn’t demand extreme physical labor, so we are looking into this.

I have, of course, read everything possible on Muhammad Yunus and Grameen and other pro-grams around the world. We will probably start this next year, as we did in Peru, with a small, informal system, and see where that takes us. Although The Mountain Fund was intended to promote and support existing works, I often find myself in the role of catalyst when there is an obvious need and no one has yet stepped up to the plate. Let’s keep talking and seeing what we can do”.
