CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE JACOBS & CUSHMAN SAN DIEGO FOOD BANK

2 0 1 7 A N N U A L R E P O R T

Greetings! This past year the Food Bank celebrated our 40th anniversary serving San Diego County. Founded in 1977, the Food Bank has been a vital resource for individuals, families and children facing hunger in communities throughout the county for four decades!

As I look back on the Food Bank’s years of service, I want to especially thank the donors who have made our mission possible. Thanks to our past supporters, we fed school children living in poverty in the 1980s who are now parents with successful careers. We were able to ensure that seniors could enjoy retirement rather than face a daily struggle with hunger. And since 1977, we are the number one organization in our community that has been providing a safety net for families who needed temporary assistance until they could get back on their feet. As a totally local organization, we are able to adapt and pivot so we can meet the community’s evolving needs.

The Food Bank is part of the fabric of our community, and I am awed by the amount that has been achieved and the legacy of this vital agency. This legacy is represented by all of the people that we have helped in difficult times who are leading successful lives now. Today, our vital mission continues as we feed working-poor families, fixed-income seniors, the homeless, low-income military families, and children living in poverty.

After four decades of service, we continue to be a trailblazing nonprofit. This year we started two pioneering new programs including our College Hunger-relief Program that provides food assistance to low-income college students and our Diaper Bank Program that provides diapers to low-income parents so they can send their children to day care, stay employed and provide for their families. Both of these programs are at the heart of our mission to help remove barriers to work and education with the ultimate goal of breaking the cycle of poverty for families in our service population.

Every day I am honored and humbled to lead such an important nonprofit that has deep roots in our community, and thanks to your support, we will continue to serve our community until we eradicate hunger from San Diego County.

Please know that you are at the heart of all we do!

Best regards,

James A. Floros President & CEO

Food Bank Warehouse Receives LEED v4 Gold Certification & Energy Star Award This year, the Food Bank became the first food warehouse in the world to receive the LEED v4 Gold award, a national green building certification. The award recognizes the Food Bank’s recent facility improvements including the installation of 1,400 solar panels on the Food Bank’s roof, a new 3,400-square-foot composting and recycling center to divert more than 600,000 pounds of waste annually from local landfills, and measures to decrease water and energy usage. In addition, the Food Bank received the EPA’s Energy Star Award with our warehouse performing better than 95% of similar facilities across the United States.

College Hunger-relief ProgramThe Food Bank launched our new College Hunger-relief Program to provide food assistance to college students from low-income and impoverished backgrounds. The program is providing food, resources, and expertise to all San Diego County colleges and universities that have feeding programs on campus for students facing food insecurity. The ultimate goal of the program is to help students stay in school so they can graduate, get a good job, and break the cycle of poverty.

Diaper Bank ProgramDiapers can be a barrier to employment for low-income parents with babies and toddlers. This is because parents must provide a day’s supply of disposable diapers to day care providers, or their children cannot be admitted, and they cannot go to work. The Diaper Bank Program was established to overcome this barrier to work. The program, inspired by Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, provides donated diapers through the Food Bank’s distribution network to local, low-income parents with infants and toddlers so they can remain employed, provide for their families, and lift themselves out of poverty.
