Be a Fall Festival VolunteerThe existence of the Stillman Valley Fall Festival is dependent upon

involvement from the community. We are looking for anyone who has ideas, some extra time, and a desire to get involved! Without our vol-unteers, a festival of this size would not be possible. There are several areas of interest to choose from and the steering committee members are anxious to hear from you. This is the perfect time to share your com-ments and suggestions! During the Festival this year, you will see all of our current volunteers wearing a shirt provided by the sponsors listed on the back. The only way to get a shirt is to volunteer a couple of hours dur-ing the weekend.

All Fall Festival volunteers this year will receive free water while you work. Plus, all volunteers are invited to the Festival pizza party on October 13th.

For more information or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please email the steering committee at [email protected] or call 815-645-2011.

When you see one of our volunteers this year in their nice new shirts, make sure you thank them for helping with the Stillman Valley Fall Festi-val. We could not do it with out them.

2009 Stillman Valley Fall Festival 2009 Stillman Valley Fall Festival Honorary CitizenHonorary Citizen

The Stillman Valley Fall Festival has chosen Marvin Swan-son as the 2009 Honorary Citizen.

“Since the days of the Great Depression from 1929 - 1940, farming has come a long way”, states Marvin Swan-son. Marvin is the only charter member of the Stillman Valley FFA Chapter living today. He joined the chapter in its initial year in 1934 and continued membership throughout his high school years.

He walked, rode his bike, or rode his horse three and a half miles to school each day because there were no school busses. Sometimes in the winter he would get to school by horse and sleigh because snowplows did not exist yet. He carried his home prepared lunch in a syrup pail. About once a month if Marvin had 5 cents he could go to Seebergs for a sandwich, cookie, and fruit; “Money was hard to come by.” The school dress attire consisted of patched up overalls and darned socks.

A normal day for Marvin consisted of waking up at 5:00 am and milking 3 cows by hand before he went to school, and then again when he came home. Also, he was a mem-ber of a large family and was responsible for assisting with

other tasks as well.Marvin’s FFA enterprise consisted of a fi ve acre corn fi eld

that he planted with a two row horse-drawn planter, using check wire so that it could be plowed in two directions. The fi rst tractor used by the family was a 1923 Fordson, pur-chased in 1930. He kept seeds from his previous year’s har-vest to plant again the following year. The seed was stored upstairs to keep it dry and away from mice. Marvin used a hand-cranked corn sheller to remove the corn from its cob and make it ready to plant. What corn wasn’t needed for the next year’s planting, it was stored until dry and shelled by George Glendenning Sr’s business. He states, “We could not buy seed corn, as no companies sold it until approximate-ly 1939.” “Didn’t raise much corn in those days; approxi-mately 35 to 40 bushels per acre. No fertilizer or chemicals were used-instead he used chicken manure and could tell the difference where applied. Morning glories were a big prob-lem”, remarks Marvin Swanson.

The Stillman Valley Fall Festival is honored to have Marvin as our honorary citizen this year. Be sure to give him a wave this year in the parade.

Something that is often overlooked by Americans is our ag-ricultural heritage. In the early days, agriculture was a way of life that every person had to live. Most of us wouldn’t have to look far to fi nd a family member who partic-ipated or who still partici-pates in some type of ag-ricultural activity. Stillman Valley takes pride on its ag-ricultural heritage, which is why every year there is a Hit and Miss Engine and Antique Tractor Show held during the Stillman Valley Fall Festival.

Everyone is invited to come join us on September 26th and 27th as we celebrate our farming heritage. Spectators can enjoy viewing working displays of hit and miss engines in the Stillman Valley Park.

Participants can also observe the tractors that line the streets by the Stillman Valley Hardware store which used to sell trac-

tors and farm equipment. Anyone who has a tractor, hit

and miss engine, farm equipment, garden tractor, or any other type of farm related item is encour-aged to display with us. If you don’t have anything to display, we strongly encourage you to stop by to see some of the equipment that advanced farming to what it is to-day. As always, the show will be held rain or shine and is free for participants as well as for specta-tors. For more information contact Todd Hall (815) 262-2650, Ron

Hall (815) 262-4728, or Brent Pearson (815) 997-2295. Thank you to Byron Bank for providing the security.

Second Wind was started in 2004 to establish a high energy country band that would eventually turn into one of the most successful bands in northern Illinois and south-ern Wisconsin. Although it has seen many changes, the band keeps on moving on and on! Playing songs from old school classic country, to the favorite country songs of today, Second Wind nev-er leaves the audience disappointed. Play-ing everything from Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, to Alabama, George Strait, Brooks and Dunn, Gary Allan, Jason Mi-chael Carroll, and Josh Turner just to name a few. Second Wind also has a little bit of a wild side to old classic rock tunes from various artists such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, and ZZ top. In 2008, Second Wind was nominated for Country Band of the Year at the RAMI awards in Rockford, IL. Although they didn’t take home the winning prize, Second Wind has shown their abili-ties to compete with the other top bands in the northern

Illinois and southern Wisconsin circuit. With new frontgirl Kayla, Doug on lead guitar and vo-

cals, and Stu on bass and vocals, they show they can keep the show and the party alive and moving. Then there’s Ed on drums and Bob on steel guitar creating

a combination of a wonderful mix of music and sound that leaves the crowd begging for more.

Second Wind has been through many chang-es through the last few years and continues to carry out their goal of producing good mu-sic and a fun show for fans of all ages. They would like to take the time to thank all their fans for supporting them and live music.

Don’t miss Second Wind at the Stillman Valley Fall Festival on Sunday, Sept. 27. They will perform before and after the parade from noon – 1 p.m. and from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.second-windtheband.org or www.stillmanvalleyfallfestival.com.

Bob Hoernecke and his wife, Patsy will be hosting their 11th annual Garden Railroad open house during the Fall Festival.

The Great Western Timberline Railroad was started in 1990 and is set in the time period of the late 1800’s. The railroad contains over 300 feet of track with two western towns, an Indian village, two waterfalls and pond, river-bed, two trestles, two tunnels and three bridges. The newest addition to the railroad is a circus. The plantings in-clude miniature trees and a wide variety of perennials and annuals. The trains are radio-controlled and powered by electric and battery.

This display will be available for viewing on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 27 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Take Stillman Valley Road to Hales Corner Road. Go west on Hales Corner Road to Crestview Road, and then north to 7866 Crestview Road. We hope to see you there!

The parade route begins by leaving the High School parking lot on South Pine and continues North on Pine Street for fi ve blocks, then going East on Main Street. It continues on Main Street to Merid-ian Road. The Parade will offi cially end when it gets past Route 72. The return route to the high school will be along Me-ridian road to the east entrance to the high school and back to the parking lot. Groups may stop and disperse at the intersection of Pershing and Meridian.

Due to safety concerns from the offi cers directing traf-fi c, all parade participants will continue across Route 72 onto Meridian. There will be no stopping at the East End.

If you are in the Parade and going to the High School:

The road in front of the High school is closed for safe-

ty reasons. All parade entries that are gathering at the High School should use the back entrance to register for the parade. If you are dropping someone off that is go-ing to participate in the parade, you can park in the back by the baseball fi elds or drop them off

at Highland school. The only traffi c past the check-in point will be entries in the parade. Again this is for the safety of all the entries in the parking lot.

Thanks for your cooperation and we hope to see you at the Parade.

Stillman Valley FFA Selected Stillman Valley FFA Selected as Parade Marshalas Parade Marshal

On December 24, 1934, a group of eleven boys from Stillman Valley chartered the Stillman Valley FFA Chapter. Back then, it was known as “The Future Farmers of America.” A lot has changed since that day in 1934. We no longer refer to ourselves as the Future Farmers of America, but as just the Still-man Valley FFA Chapter.

The FFA makes a positive dif-ference in the lives of its mem-bers by promoting premier leadership, personal growth, and career success, through agricultural education. Over the years, we have seen many changes in ag-riculture. We have gone from the horse drawn plow to the tractor that literally can drive itself. The FFA chapter has been through some chang-

es as well. We still have a major impact on Farming and production agriculture, but we also

stress that students do not have to be from a farm or to live on a farm to be a successful FFA member. The National FFA organization is one of the largest youth organizations in the world. Our Stillman Valley FFA Chapter is the larg-est organization that can be found at Stillman Valley High School.

The Stillman Valley FFA Chapter is very proud to be named the parade marshal for this year’s Stillman Valley Fall Festival Parade. We are looking forward to many more successful years in Stillman Valley. We hope that some-

day, we will make an impact on all of the youth in the Stillman Valley School District, and that all students have the chance to be a part of this wonderful organization.

All well-behaved dogs are invited to participate in this years’ Costume Contest. Dogs will be judged in 2 categories and awarded placements 1st thru 4th. Dogs will be judged on their abil-ity to show off their costume with attitude. Winners will each receive a prize and the decision of the judge is fi nal.

CATEGORY 1- Store bought costumes. These are manufactured costumes that you can purchase from your favorite retailer.

CATEGORY 2- Go Green!- Recycle used items from around your home to make a great costume for your dog.

    Costume Contest Rules:

    A) All dogs must remain on a 6 ft. leash or shorter and must be in the control of a responsible adult. The leash must be secured to a correctly fi tting collar and not to the costume itself.

    B) Owners or handlers must clean up after their dog. Poopie Bags will be provided.

    C) All costumes must be free from any material deemed harmful to the dog. No substances such as wire, blades, fi recrackers, fuels, insulation, hazardous materials or any other material that may hinder a dogs breathing or ability to pant can be used.

If, in the judges’ or committees’ opinion, any part of the costume is found to be harmful in any way, you will be asked to remove it immediately.

    D) Any dog found to be unsocial or unable to safely participate will be asked to leave the festival grounds.

Please do not leave your dog unattended in your car. Inside car temperatures rise quickly to deadly levels. Plan to ei-ther stay with your dog or take them home before you enjoy the rest of the day at the Stillman Valley Fall Festival.
