Did You Know... These Facts About April

• Diamonds maybe are a girl’s best friends, but they are absolutely April’s birthstone.

• April is National Humor Month and that’s no joke because it begins on April Fool’s Day.

• It is believed that William Shakespeare lived and died the same day in April. While there isn’t cer-tainty on his birthdate (he was baptized on April 26, 1564 but that may or may not have been his birthdate), his death was April 23, 1616. So close in date it’s as poetic as he was.

• If you give birth to a girl in April, consider the names Sweet Pea or Daisy as these are the birth flower.

year we will also have a Trunk Sale for anyone that has a little to sell and can fit it on a table or car trunk. Space is limited for the Trunk Sale. You will find the RE/MAX tent and the Trunk Sale at the Citadel Park School park-ing lot.

In Our CityFire Pit Regulations Help Create Good Neighbour Relationships When you ask Calgarians what they

love about this city, the answer is often “the people.” While most of us do our best to be good neighbours, sometimes we need a little guid-ance to do the right thing. That’s where the Community Standards Bylaw comes in.

Did you know that the Commu-nity Standards Bylaw lays out the requirements for using backyard wood-burning fire pits? The regula-tions for fire pits include:• Using a mesh screen or spark guard to

reduce the spread of embers and sparks• Extinguishing the flame by midnight on weekdays

and 1 a.m. on weekends• Restricting the height of the flame to one metre

• Building a fire pit within maximum size limits• Listing materials that cannot be burned

• Ensuring the fire pit is at least two metres from other structures and is not

under a tree or overhanging branches• Ensuring you have a means of extin-

guishing the fire on hand and that you put it out before you leave it unattended

The bylaw includes fines for unsafe fires and burning prohibited materi-

als, so it pays to understand the bylaw. For more information, visit Calgary.ca/

firepits. If you have a concern or complaint about fire pits, call 311.

In Our CityCouncillor ReportImproved public transportation has been a prior-

ity of mine at City Council which is why I supported increased funding to Calgary Transit in the 2018 Budget Adjustments. Starting March 19th, 2018, four new bus routes were introduced in Ward 2: Route 115 – Symons Valley Parkway, Route 138 - Citadel, Route 123 – Sage Hill/North Pointe, and Route 124 - Evanston. These new routes provide improved connections to shopping centres, the Sage Hill Hub, the new Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge, North Pointe bus terminal and Red Line LRT stations. Transit service coverage also expanded in the communities of Evanston and Sherwood, and the realignment of service between Evanston and North Pointe will result in significant travel time savings to the downtown core. The design of the new routes in this area was informed by ongoing feedback that Calgary Transit and I received from the public on the bus route network in our community. I would appreciate any feedback that you have on our new transit routes, and on any other route that needs to be improved.

Spring is finally here! That means the City’s street clean-ing crews are coming to our neighbourhoods to remove debris and gravel off the roads. The program, which improves safety and mobility for Calgarians, kicks off at the beginning of April. This year, street sweeping will wrap-up in June. In order to make this happen, crews will be sweeping streets on a compressed schedule, working 7 days per week. We are asking all Calgarians to help us make the city beautiful and roads safe by re-moving vehicles and carts from the street when you see road-sweeping signs in your community. You can visit Calgary.ca/sweep to confirm your streets sweeping date and to track sweeper progress across the city.

Wichewakn District Girl Guide News1st Brownies- Hawkwood

When I think back to when I was a child, Brownie memories are some of my fondest. I loved putting

on that uniform every week and gathering around my fellow Gnomes, collecting dues, taking attendance and then dancing around the toad stool, singing the Brownie Anthem Song. Each week was always a new and excit-ing adventure. We’d play fun games, do crafts, partici-pate in learning activities (but fun ones, not like school work... LOL!) and my most favourite party of the weekly meeting was singing around the “campfire”. I am smil-ing as I write this and reminisce a little.

In addition to weekly meeting memories, I have countless thoughts of good times shared with other girls at weekend sleepovers and the many camping adventures we went on. Guiding remains one of my top 10 favourite life experiences and at the age of 40 something, I’ve had quite a few so that really says something about the value my time in Brownies, Girl Guides and Pathfinders was to me.

Now, in my 3rd year as a Leader, I endeavour to help all the young ladies I meet make as many, if not MORE fond memories of their time in Brownies and I hope to fuel their passion to continue onto Girl Guides, Path-finders, Rangers and maybe even become a Leader someday.

To see if our Unit was on the right track to making this “hope” a reality, we asked our Brownies to complete a short questionnaire and after reviewing the results, well, you be the judge...

What do you love most about Brownies?Doing crafts – YukikoPlaying games – CallianaSinging songs – Chloe

What has been your favourite activity this year in Brownies?Learning about the Canadian flag and making one – AmeliaThe Board Game Night – MollyOur [Happy Birthday Canada & ME] Sleepover – Mar-low

What is one word you would use to describe a girl who is a Brownie?Helpful – AngelaHelpful, friendly and kind – Isabella W.Fantastic – Emily

Why should girls join Brownies?Because it is fun! – AliciaSo they can learn new things! – AriannaBecause girls are AWESOME! – Ave

So, there you have it, straight from our very own 1st Brownies. It would seem that they are truly enjoy-ing their time in Guiding and they think MORE GIRLS SHOULD JOIN and so do I!

Guiding helps girls develop strong communication skills, builds upon their self-esteem and contributes to their overall success in life through fun, educational activities and experiences!!

If you have been considering getting your daughter involved in Girl Guides but you are not sure what it is all about or where to start, contact me.
