THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD

(CHRISTMAS) THE GIFT OF GOD'S WORD On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems

appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the

great gift of God's Word. Because it is creative,

God's Word always points to its author, always calls

us to respond. Because it is powerful, God's Word

can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the tran-

scendent with the immanent, the divine with the hu-

man. Because it is graceful, God's Word establishes

a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God.

At the heart of God's Word lies a tantalizing

tension between the mysterious and the mundane.

In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension

both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us

to respond, to act upon that meaning.

Once accepted and opened, the gift of God's

Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on

calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the

gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at

Christmas, but at every moment of life.

CALENDARS Santa Lucia wall calendars for 2017 are

available in the entrance area of the church thanks

to Michael Coletta Sons Funeral Home.

PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS TO THE ALTAR If you would like to presents the gifts to the

altar, please, see one of our ushers before the Mass,

especially if a Mass is being celebrated for your de-

ceased loved ones or for your personal intention.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION DAY On Tuesday, January 10th, we will have

our monthly exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

from 9 a.m. (after 8:15 a.m. School Mass) until 3

p.m. Jesus is inviting each of us to come and spend

some time in prayer with him. During that time our

relationship with him will grow and the desire to

have him at the center of our lives will increase.

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS WITH LOVE

Fr. Stipe

CHRISTMAS AT GRECCIO What better way to welcome the arrival of

the Christ Child than to take a brief journey to Grec-

cio, the spot in central Italy where St. Francis of As-

sisi created the first Christmas crib in the year 1223.

Francis, recalling a visit he had made years

before to Bethlehem, resolved to create the manger

he had seen there. The ideal spot was a cave in

nearby Greccio. He would find a baby (we’re not sure

if it was a live infant or the carved image of a baby),

hay upon which to lay him, an ox and an ass to

stand beside the manger. Word went out to the peo-

ple of the town. At the appointed time they arrived

carrying torches and candles. One of the friars be-

gan celebrating Mass. Francis himself gave the

homily. His biographer, Thomas of Celano, recalls

that Francis “stood before the manger, overcome

with love and filled with a wonderful happiness.” For

Francis, the simple celebration was meant to recall

the hardships Jesus suffered even as an infant, a

savior who chose to become poor for our sake.

On Christmas day, as we pray around the

Christmas cribs in church and in our homes, we wel-

come into our hearts that same Savior.

December 25, 2016 SUNDAY MESSENGER

TREASURE FROM OUR TRADITION An old joke asks, "What time is Midnight

Mass?" The answer is not really obvious, since Christ-

mas is unique in having several distinct celebrations.

The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to

hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of

Jesus and his origins. The concept of "midnight" pre-

dates clock time, and really has to do with a celebra-

tion in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not

possible to receive Communion without fasting for a

full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possi-

ble for the people to receive. The first Mass after sun-

rise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as "The

Shepherds' Mass," and later Masses set aside stories

of Jesus' birth to focus on the key to the day's cele-

bration: John the Evangelist's majestic theology of

Christ's identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling

among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only

monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners

typically take just one entry point into the mystery.

Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the com-

ing of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day,

but a season. You still have two weeks to send those

Christmas cards before you're officially late!

ARE YOU A REGISTERED PARISHIONER? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encour-

age you to register as a member of Santa Lucia. Reg-

istering in the parish makes the process much easier

when it is time for infant baptism, religious education

registration, weddings and when asked to be a spon-

sor for baptism or confirmation. We welcome anyone

who wants to share in the life of Santa Lucia Parish.

Registering is easy! Visit or call the Parish Office

(312-842-6115).

The best way to keep Christ in Christmas

is to keep Mass in Christmas.

This Christmas, let us celebrate anew the fact

that God has come in the flesh to accompany and

save us! Let us not forget: Christmas is a season, not

just a day. The Church celebrates several important

feasts after Dec 25, especially: Jan 1 – Solemnity of

Mary, Mother of God (a holy day of obligation); Jan 8

– Feast of the Epiphany; Jan 9 – Feast of the Bap-

tism of the Lord (which traditionally finishes Christ-

mas Season).
