Mark 10:17-30 There exists a tension between being of this world and the next; between heaven and earth. The great artist Michelangelo captures humanities very longing for heaven, as well as the inner anguish caused by the ever-present feeling as to how far from there we actually are, in his depiction of the Creation of Adam painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In this image, God is seen stretching out His finger to grant Adam the spark of life. But the fingers do not touch each other, serving to create a feeling of excited tension in those who gaze upon the image, almost pleading with Adam to reach out just a little further, to try a bit harder. And it is this excited tension that is evidenced in the protagonist of this morning’s Gospel, the rich young man. The young man had come to realize what he longs for most in life, namely heaven, and this epiphany overcomes him with an excitement that impels him to run to Jesus, to fall down at his feet, and to demand to know how he can arrive there. Yet Jesus’ response is anything but emotional. In fact, it is sobering. While Jesus looks at him in love, He demands that the young man move beyond mere emotion and passion and really think about all that it takes to get to heaven. And it is in this response to the young man, that of asking him to give his life in love, that we are given the very essence of the Christian moral life. While we too long for heaven, “something no eye has seen, no ear has heard, something that we have never imagined but that God has prepared for those who love him,” how badly do we really desire to get there? Jesus asks that same last question He posed to the young man to each one of us. Just how badly do we desire heaven? Enough to give our lives in love? The Trappist Monk, Thomas Merton had said: “A life is either spiritual or not spiritual at all. No man can serve two masters. Your life is shaped by the end you live for. You are made in the image of what you desire.” Such a line causes us to pause and to ask ourselves, “What do I live for and how badly do I want to obtain it?” Friends, keep reaching for home, for that is what heaven is! There is nothing more exciting to live for! Msgr. Geno Sylva

PRAYER TO SAINT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
