Taking responsibility for others is difficult in the CULTURE we have created for ourselves. To be Politically Cor-rect, Socially Distanced, or Isolated leads to Spiritual Desolation, Social Pacifism, Self-Righteousness...and Loneliness.

And it moves us away from the Church's Call to COMMUNIO...

God created us for Community. He is immersed in the lives of His people. He is with us when we are living His Plan for our life. He is with us when we sin. He knows when we are weary and needy. He understands our fatigue and limitations.

So, He sent His Son who, through the Mystical Body of Christ, established the ULTIMATE COMMUNITY...HIS CHURCH.

It is through this Community that he manifests His Provident Love to move us from real or perceived Abandon-ment to Consolation...Spiritually and Socially.

But there is more. Jesus passes through our life 24/7 through the people, events, and circumstances He places in our life. He makes Himself available to us through His Compassion and Tenderness...through the Gift of the Sac-raments exclusive to His Church...giving us the Grace we need to endure our trials...and helping us carry our Per-sonal Cross through the Darkness of the Pandemic...in those times when we are alone and afraid...

The Catholic Social Doctrine of Solidarity means taking other's Sorrows on ourselves...to Suffer WITH Suffering Humanity. As Social Beings, we are called to be attuned in Charity to the needs of others...the family, the friend, the enemy, the stranger, the immigrant, the refugee, the homeless, the rejected...the invisible.

AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF JESUS CHRIST, WE ARE CALLED TO EMBRACE THE UNEM-BRACEABLE...as Jesus Did.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pray for Us

Monday-Friday we serve around 200-300 people each day in our breakfast sandwich

line, food pantry, soup and sandwich To-Go at St. Elizabeth of Hungary’s and Snacks on

the Hill.

Please donate to help us keep these outreach ministries operational.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society helps ~12 households each month with rental and utili-

ty assistance.

Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

I just noticed something. In the two accounts of big storms at sea, Jesus is either sleeping through it---Mt. 8: 23-27--- or he’s not in the boat at all---Mt. 14: 2-33. That feels about right. I have a beloved friend who lived her life in prayer. And the only time she absolutely lost her connection to Jesus was when she was desperately ill in the hospital. Her sense was that he was either sound asleep or not in her presence at all.

She recovered, and over time her deep sense of the presence of Jesus was restored. But those two gospel accounts of the disciples ter-rorized at sea are a perfect metaphor for our own experiences of trauma. When we call to Jesus in our trials, do we feel him with us? The gospel suggests that he is there, but so totally confident in God’s power over the sea (and illness, and death) that he is serene dur-ing our thrashings about.

O you of little faith, he says to wave-tossed Peter. Why did you doubt? Well, let’s see. Why do we doubt? We are still in the absolute middle of the storm. We’ve closed down, we’ve reopened, we’ve closed down again. We are those disciples, terrorized in the boat. But we need to be Peter.

Reach, says the gospel. Be courageous and reach. But a lot of times, we are too weak, too far gone, to reach. Are you like that today? Are you just too weak to reach? No worries. The Body of Christ has your back. We reach for you. And look! Here comes Jesus, call-ing your name, reaching out to catch you.

What need do you have that the Body of Christ can fill? Reach out.

Saint Clare of Assisi

One of the more sugary movies made about Francis of Assisi pictures Clare as a golden-haired beauty floating through sun-drenched fields, a sort of one-woman counterpart to the new Franciscan Order. The beginning of her religious life was indeed movie material. Having refused to marry at 15, Clare was moved by the dynamic preaching of Francis. He became her lifelong friend and spiritual guide. At 18, Clare escaped from her father’s home one night, was met on the road by friars carrying torches, and in the poor little chapel called the Por-tiuncula received a rough woolen habit, exchanged her jeweled belt for a common rope with knots in it, and sacrificed her long tresses to Francis’ scissors. He placed her in a Benedictine convent, which her father and un-cles immediately stormed in rage. Clare clung to the altar of the church, threw aside her veil to show her cropped hair, and remained adamant. Sixteen days later her sister Agnes joined her. Others came. They lived a simple life of great poverty, austerity, and complete seclusion from the world, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order. At age 21, Francis obliged Clare under obedience to accept the office of ab-bess, one she exercised until her death. The Poor Ladies went barefoot, slept on the ground, ate no meat, and ob-served almost complete silence. Later Clare, like Francis, persuaded her sisters to moderate this rigor: “Our bodies are not made of brass.” The greatest emphasis, of course, was on gospel poverty. They possessed no property, even in common, subsisting on daily contributions. When even the pope tried to persuade Clare to mitigate this practice, she showed her characteristic firmness: “I need to be absolved from my sins, but I do not wish to be absolved from the obligation of following Jesus Christ.”

Contemporary accounts glow with admiration of Clare’s life in the convent of San Damiano in Assisi. She served the sick and washed the feet of the begging nuns. She came from prayer, it was said, with her face so shining it dazzled those about her. She suffered serious illness for the last 27 years of her life. Her influence was such that popes, cardinals, and bishops often came to consult her—Clare herself never left the walls of San Damiano. Francis always remained her great friend and inspiration. Clare was always obedient to his will and to the great ideal of gospel life which he was mak-ing real. A well-known story concerns her prayer and trust. Clare had the Blessed Sacrament placed on the walls of the convent when it faced attack by in-vading Saracens. “Does it please you, O God, to deliver into the hands of these beasts the defenseless children I have nourished with your love? I beseech you, dear Lord, protect these whom I am now unable to protect.” To her sisters she said, “Don’t be afraid. Trust in Jesus.” The Saracens fled.

Monday through Friday, our volunteers give out 20-30 bags of food each day at our food pantry. Each bag of food includes a tuna lunch, chicken noodle soup, chili, peanut butter, peaches, a bot-tle of water, a can of V8, a sleeve of saltines and a granola bar. Each bag costs us about $8.00.

These bags are accessible for anyone in need. We serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

For $40 a week, you could help us feed a brother or sister in need.
