“Among the vulnerable for whom the church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to de-ny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this. …Precisely because this involves the internal consistency of our message about the value of the

human person, the church cannot be expected to change her position on this question… It is not ‘progressive’ to try to re-solve problems by eliminating a human life...."—Pope Francis

In the Company of Pope Francis

FROM YOUR PASTOR Where is YOUR HOPE?

It lies in YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST, GOD'S UNENDING LOVE AND MERCY FOR YOU, and THE COMMUNITY WE BUILD AS CHURCH.

As CHURCH, Colorado Catholics helped move Proposition 115 to the Ballot this Fall. It will prohibit Abortions in Colorado after 22 weeks -- the age when a child is considered able to live outside the womb with medical help. Colorado is one of Seven States that has no restrictions on abortion up until birth. In the case where the mother's life is at risk, or she feels the need to abort when chromosomal or structural abnormalities are discovered in the child, or when the child is conceived in rape, late abortion re-strictions will not affect these cases.

As CATHOLICS, our goal is to PROTECT LIFE at all stages. In Faithfulness to Jesus, we can Never Support Abortion. Proposi-tion 115 is a STEP in that direction...NOT THE TOTALITY of what Catholics Believe.

    THIS IS OUR FAITH...

The RIGHT TO LIFE is the FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT upon which all other RIGHTS EMANATE. LIFE IS THE FRUIT OF GOD'S ACT OF CREATION...THEREFORE, IT IS THE ULTIMATE SACRED AND DIVINE GIFT.

Pope Francis regularly reminds us of the dangers of a 'Throw Away Culture.' That includes Human Life, Political and Social Rights and Responsibilities, and Care for the Environment. That is CATHOLIC SOCIAL DOCTRINE.

At its core is the BASIC DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON -- ALL HUMAN LIFE -- from CONCEPTION to NATURAL DEATH.

    THIS IS OUR HOPE...

Sometimes, life begins under complicated circumstances -- rape, casual sex, abuse, the absence of a committed father, family scorn, poverty, and fear. Sometimes pregnancies are complicated affecting the health of the mother, the detection of developmen-tal deficiencies, or the inability to cope with a larger family.

But for Catholics, a HUMAN LIFE is at the CORE of any situation and any decision.

As a COMMUNITY, we DO NOT ABANDON that LIFE, we SUPPORT THE CHILD AND THE FAMILY. We protect the Mother's Health, we find a Suitable Home for the child, we provide Necessary Medical and Mental Health Services for the child and the parent or guardian, and we pursue financial options for the family and for the care of the child.

    How do we do this?

As an ARCHDIOCESE, the Archbishop's Catholic Appeal underwrites many programs that address these life circumstances. OUR PRO-LIFE MINISTRIES include Project Rachel, Gabriel Houses, Marisol Pregnancy Clinics, and housing for mothers in crisis.

As a PARISH FAMILY, we offer our INDIVIDUAL TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE to support the child and their family by running errands, providing needed transportation, gifting a parent's night off, and assisting in basic house and car chores and needs. Saint Vincent de Paul Societies can provide financial assistance in paying bills.

Helping the child and the mother, father,or guardian in these ways is a Corporal Work Of Mercy that becomes Life Sustaining.

    THIS IS OUR LOVE...

If Proposition 115 is passed, it surely will SAVE ONE LIFE.

And that life may just be the EMT that may SAVE YOUR LIFE someday…

+May God Bless You and Keep You+

    -Very Reverend Ronald W Cattany

COMMUNITY OUTREACH Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pray for Us

Twenty-Ninth Sunday of Ordinary Time We need to talk about Cyrus. Right now, two weeks before the election. That he is mentioned in the first reading this weekend is one of the many things I love about the lectionary. When we really need to hear something, the Holy Spirit has already placed it in the readings for the day.

Here’s a guy who could teach us something about wise leadership. He ruled the Persian Empire for thirty years (559-530 BC), and expanded it into the largest empire ever to rule up to that time.

After conquering Babylon and observing the Jewish community there he said, “Here’s all the treasure King Nebuchadnezzar stole from you when he burned your Temple sixty years ago. Go home, rebuild your Temple, and pray for the Royal Family and me.”

Ah. Doesn’t that language just soothe your battered soul? Here is what I am confident we all want to hear from whomever wins this election: Let’s begin again. Let’s find again the values we all cherish: civility, kindness, understanding. If we can’t search our hearts and see that we have, in the name of love of our country, lashed out and deeply hurt others, we can’t heal. And let’s discipline our-selves to not say, “Yeah, but what about THEM?” Let’s just use this moment to examine ourselves.

By using understanding and compassion, King Cyrus was able to see the pain that others had experienced. That’s why he is the only Gentile in the Hebrew scriptures to be called God’s “anointed.” At our baptisms, each of us was anointed “priest, prophet, and King.” May we activate that anointing immediately, in imitation of King Cyrus the Great.

How will I be an instrument of peace after the election?

SPIRITUAL FORMATION Saint Philip Neri, Pray for Us

Saint of the Week Saint Paul of the Cross

Born in northern Italy in 1694, Paul Daneo lived at a time when many regarded Jesus as a great moral teacher but no more. After a brief time as a soldier, he turned to solitary prayer, developing a devotion to Christ’s passion. Paul saw in the Lord’s passion a demonstration of God’s love for all people. In turn that devotion nurtured his compassion and supported a preaching ministry that touched the hearts of many listeners. He was known as one of the most popular preachers of his day, both for his words and for his generous acts of mercy.

In 1720, Paul founded the Congregation of the Pas-sion, whose members combined devotion to Christ’s passion with preaching to the poor, and rigorous pen-ances. Known as the Passionists, they add a fourth vow to the traditional three of poverty, chastity, and obedience, to spread the memory of Christ’s passion among the faithful. Paul was elected superior general of the Congregation in 1747, spending the remainder of his life in Rome.

Paul of the Cross died in 1775, and was canonized in 1867. Over 2,000 of his letters and several of his short writings have survived.

Paul’s devotion to Christ’s passion must have seemed eccentric if not bizarre to many people. Yet it was that devotion that nurtured Paul’s compassion and sup-ported a preaching ministry that touched the hearts of many listeners. He was one of the most popular preachers of his day, known for both his words and his gener-ous acts of mercy.

QUO VADIS? “Lord, Where you are you going?”

These are the words that Peter spoke to Jesus when Our Lord appeared to him on the Appian Way as Pe-

    ter fled persecution in Rome.

Jesus answered, "I am going to Rome to be crucified again"

As we each continue on our particular faith walk, whether we are cradle Catholics or converts, prayer and sacraments are imperative to the vitality of our Church. We come together to persevere in communi-ty and education, prompted and sustained by grace.

Please join us on Wednesday evenings during our RCIA formation classes to learn about the most im-portant pillars of our faith and to give witness to those becoming Catholic.
