Diocese of San José Receives Administrative Subpoena On December 9, the Diocese of San José, along with five other dioceses in California, received ad-ministrative subpoenas from the California Attorney General’s office requesting documents related to the mandatory reporting of allegations of sexual misconduct with minors by clergy and layper-sons within the Diocese from 1996 to the present. Before receiving the subpoena, the Diocese provided the Attorney General with more than a thou-sand documents that did not affect the privacy rights of victims/survivors or disregard state and fed-eral labor laws regarding personnel files and volunteer records. These documents were provided in response to the statewide administrative review initiated by the Attorney General in May 2019. We, the Diocese of San José, believe that protecting all children, youth, and vulnerable adults and bringing about justice, reconciliation, and healing to all victims/survivors is our sacred duty. We have an important responsibility to protect the privacy and legal rights of victims/survivors, lay em-ployees, lay volunteers, and clergy. In this sense, a subpoena may be good and preferable to an informal request for documents without legal protection. It supports our shared goal of ensuring that the safeguards in place for our children are working as they should while protecting the privacy rights of victims/survivors and complying with state and federal labor laws. The Diocese of San José provides ongoing comprehensive services and care to victims/survivors of sexual abuse and encourage anyone who has not previously come forward to do so, first, by contact-ing the local authorities: police department or sheriff’s office; and second, by making a report to our Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults, toll-free at (844) 372-1691 or online via a third-party site, opcva.ethicspoint.com. The Diocese will not be complacent. We pledge to continue working tirelessly to provide safe and nurturing environments for all and fostering a path of healing and reconciliation for those who have suffered abuse. Learn more about what the Diocese of San José has done and is doing in the wake of the clergy abuse scandal by visiting, https://www.dsj.org/safe-environment/ Bishop Oscar Cantú

LITURGICAL ADAPTATIONS DURING THE COLD/FLU SEASON

Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants and not on the tongue. The faithful should refrain from holding hands dur-ing the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer. Sign of Peace should be a greeting that does not re-quire shaking hands or touching These adaptations are to remain in effect through-out the Diocese until conditions allow for them to be re-scinded at which time our parish will be notified. Please know that the obligation to participate in Sun-day Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symp-toms to remain at home. Thank you.

The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt. Mat-thew’s Gospel tells a version of Jesus’ birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Mat-

thew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod . . . ” The story of the census is found only in Luke’s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Mat-thew’s Gospel. We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrologi-cal sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We as-sume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus. We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a fore-shadowing of Jesus’ role in salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is pre-sented as representative of Jesus’ kingship. Frankin-cense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’ death. The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana.

S aint of the Week Saint John Neumann March 28, 1822-January 5, 1860

Perhaps because the United States got a later start in the history of the world, it has relatively few canonized saints, but their number is increasing. John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at 25 and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was 29, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans. At 41, as bishop of Philadelph-ia, he organized the parochial school system into a dioce-san one, increasing the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time. Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, he drew into the city many teaching communities of sisters and the Christian Brothers. During his brief assign-ment as vice provincial for the Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial movement. Well-known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann be-

came the first American bishop to be beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia. Reflection Neumann took seriously our Lord’s words, “Go and teach all nations.” From Christ he received his instructions and the power to carry them out. For Christ does not give a mis-sion without supplying the means to accomplish it. The Father’s gift in Christ to John Neumann was his exceptional organizing ability, which he used to spread the Good News. Today the Church is in dire need of men and women to continue in our times the teaching of the Good News. The obstacles and incon-veniences are real and costly. Yet when Christians approach Christ, he supplies the necessary talents to answer today’s needs. The Spirit of Christ continues his work through the instrumentality of generous Christians.
