CLEVELAND CLINIC CATALYST 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

At age 58, Bob* has conquered throat cancer and lymphoma. Know-ing how difficult it was to battle such a dreaded illness, he wanted to help other cancer patients know what to expect and how to cope.

“When I had cancer I felt, and still do feel, that family is great but you need more,” Bob says. “I think I can give patients insight about what it’s like to go through it. People worry about the disease; they worry about bills, utilities, food and getting to work while they are sick. I can tell them how I did it,” he says.

Bob became a volunteer with the 4th Angel Mentoring Program at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center. This program matches cancer patients with specially trained cancer survivors who offer encouragement and help patients understand their illnesses.

ENHANCED EDUCATION, OUTREACH AND RECRUITMENTTo assist in funding these vital support services, the Amgen Foundation has donated $505,600.

“Amgen’s support provides precious resources. With it, we can enhance our educational support programs, increase our outreach and mentor recruitment efforts, and continue the development of caregiver support,” says Ann DeWerth, Director, 4th Angel Mentoring Program.

WHAT IS THE 4TH ANGEL MENTORING PROGRAM?As a survivor of testicular cancer, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton formed the CARES (Cancer Alliance for Research, Education and Survivorship) Initiative with the Cleveland Clinic in 1999. The 4th

Angel Mentoring program is part of this initiative.

Hamilton considered Cleveland Clinic oncologists his 1st angels, nurses his 2nd angels, and family and friends his 3rd angels. He envisioned a 4th angel in the form of a cancer survivor who could support a person struggling with cancer. Thus, the 4th Angel Mentoring Program was born.

More than 250 volunteers are part of the program.

Lewis Family Generosity Enhances Heart Treatment

Mr. Lewis, former board chairman of the Miami Philharmonic, was the model of good health: He ate right, exercised several hours a day and had no family history of heart disease. So it came as a major shock when doctors discovered last summer that three of his arteries were blocked.

With this unlikely fi nding, Mr. Lewis was dashed by his doctors to Howard Bush, M.D., for triple bypass surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Fla. Within hours, the surgery was deemed a success.

Despite the suddenness of his need for surgery, the 60-year-old never fl inched. He was confi dent he was in good hands.

“Cleveland Clinic is a leader in this area. And my experience reaffi rms that,” Mr. Lewis says.

It was an emotional moment as Jan Lewis pushed her husband’s wheelchair toward the hospital exit. Having a moment to refl ect on the unexpected ordeal she and her husband had just endured, she began to cry.

“It was the fi rst time I broke down. I just hugged Dr. Bush and I said, ‘Thank you for saving my husband,’” she recalls.

GENEROUS SUPPORT OF EDUCATION

When they look back on this experience, the Lewises say the staff at Cleveland Clinic made a traumatic situation easier to handle.

“Dr. Bush was thoughtful and easy to get a hold of, and he explained every-thing that we could expect from the pro-cess. And the staff was amazing,” Mrs. Lewis says.

To help foster the kind of fi rst-rate car-diology treatment he had received, Mr. Lewis has established a Cardiology Fel-lowship Fund. The money will support three fellows at Cleveland Clinic Florida for the next three years, under the guid-ance of Dr. Bush.

“My belief is that the money will be spent wisely,” Mr. Lewis says. “And that it will eventually increase the capacity of the cardiac unit at the highest level. I’m always motivated to support well-con-ceived, well-led efforts that improve our community,” he adds.

As a Cleveland native, Mr. Lewis de-pended on Cleveland Clinic for his primary healthcare for the past 30 years. When the Lewises moved to Miami 12 years ago, they found comfort in knowing that the Clinic was located nearby.

The couple has contributed to Cleve-land Clinic in Cleveland in the past, and their experience at the Weston location in-spired them to help fortify the healthcare resources in their own locale.

ENHANCING ART OF MEDICINE AND MUSIC ARTS

The renewed picture of good health, Mr. Lewis says he is grateful for the care he received and is proud to contribute.

Thanks to his surgery, the classical music lover will enjoy a dream fulfi lled. After years of working for this arrangement, the Cleveland Orchestra will be playing con-certs in Miami.

In the coming year, Mr. Lewis and his wife can lean back in the concert hall seats of the Miami Performing Arts Center and enjoy the harmonious workings of the orchestra, knowing they made a difference for future cardiac patients.

Daniel Lewis, of Miami, Fla., was the last person anyone would expect to be in need of heart surgery.

“My belief is that the money will be spent wisely,” Mr. Lewis says. “And that it will eventually increase the capacity of the cardiac unit at the highest level. I’m always motivated to support well-conceived, well-led efforts that improve our community.”

CLEVELAND CLINIC CATALYST 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

– Gary S. Hoffman, M.D., M.S.

The H.C.S. Foundation Funds Needed Vasculitis Research

Vasculitis, or inflammation of the blood vessels, is a rare but potentially deadly illness. It has not been well researched and, at present, has no cure. Recognizing the need for research funding, the H.C.S. Foundation took a decided step in helping these underserved patients by creating the Harold C. Schott Endowed Chair in Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases. Established seven years ago, the endowed chair was named after philanthropist and H.C.S. founder, Harold C. Schott.

This generous gift allows Gary S. Hoffman, M.D., MS, the first recipient of the H.C.S. Chair, and his team to break new ground in vasculitis treatments.

“Because too little is known about vasculitis, Mr. Schott would have appreciated being able to make a great impact though this funding,” comments Betty Jane Mulcahy, on behalf of all of the H.C.S. Foundation trustees. “Mr. Schott would have considered the gift an investment as much as a contribution,” she adds.

The swelling of blood vessels presents certain challenges that Dr. Hoffman, Chairman of the Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases Department, and his team are working to overcome. They want to effectively block the damaging inflammation related to this condition without suppressing patients’ entire immune systems.

What Causes Vasculitis? Dr. Hoffman compares the white blood cells that trigger vasculitis to mutinous soldiers that attack the citizenry they are supposed to protect. While inflammation is typically a protective response to infection, it becomes destructive to the body in the case of vasculitis. Finding those specific white blood cells – or mutinous soldiers – and developing targeted therapies is Dr. Hoffman’s passion.

“We now have the tools to identify all of the cells that come to the area of the blood vessel that gets damaged due to inflammation,” Dr. Hoffman says. “A white blood cell under the microscope might look like any other white blood cell but there are many different types and some will cause more damage than others,” he adds.

He discusses the importance of the endowed chair in the work he does here at Cleveland Clinic.

“The Schott chair brings more time for research. We not only take care of people but we also help find the sources of their illnesses. Without philanthropy, this would not be possible. It makes life better for people who are sick.”

Since too little is known about vasculitis, Mr. Schott would have appreciated being able to make a great impact though this funding.

technologies in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

“Our family has always been proud to say that Cleveland is our home,” says Sydell Miller. “It’s important for us to plant seeds for the future by giving back to our community today.”

She adds, “This gift is a way for our family to honor the memory of my husband, Arnold M. Miller, as a true entrepreneur. We feel that this gift will continue the entrepreneurial spirit of Cleveland Clinic with its innovation and leadership in healthcare.”

Cardiac Care

Inventor Marion F. “Frank” Rudy already has athletes walking on air with his patented Nike “Air” Sole.

Now, he and his wife Margaret have given Cleveland Clinic $3.5 million to do what some might equate with walking on water: They want to cure cancer.

The former aeronautical engineer and his wife are funding research at Cleveland Clinic to discover what causes normal cells to become cancerous.

Below: Philanthropist Sydell Miller and Cleveland Clinic CEO and President Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D.

Last fall, Sydell Miller and her daughters, Lauren Spilman and Stacie Halpern donated $70 million to Cleveland Clinic, making it one of the largest gifts in the philanthropic history of the United States.

The gift will name the new Arnold and Sydell Miller Family Pavilion. In addition to becoming the Clinic’s main gateway, the pavilion will contain a large outpatient facility, a hospital tower and state-of-the-art technology building. The programs within these buildings will promote the most advanced practices and

Unlocking Cancer MysteriesAt age 81, Mr. Rudy is full of vigor and passionate ideas. He wants to solve the cancer problem with the leadership of Derek Raghavan, M.D., Ph.D., who became the distinguished chair in trans-lational cancer research established by the Rudys’ contribution.

“The Rudy family’s donation will support new research at the Taussig Cancer Center and is a testament to the family’s dedication to helping unlock the mysteries of cancer,” Dr. Raghavan said. “The Rudy family’s generosity will fuel basic and clinical research for the diag-nosis and treatment of cancer, ultimately benefiting countless patients.”

Building a Better Future The donation builds upon $2 million contributions the family has already made to the Taussig Cancer Center.

A native of Cleveland, Mr. Rudy was compelled to make these donations to the Taussig Cancer Center because so many of his friends and family have battled cancer.

Beyond his personal experiences, Mr. Rudy has altruistic reasons to give. He defines philanthropy as a part of the charge to follow the “Golden Rule” and “The willingness to help those in true need through no fault of their own.”

Generosity Fuels Advanced Practices for

We got close to Cleveland Clinic, first pro-fessionally, and then we got to know so many of the doctors through our profes-sional and volunteer work and we feel as connected to them as if they’d saved our lives. But, thankfully, they haven’t had to save our lives yet,” he says.

Recently, the Duvins pledged a gener-ous gift of $1 million to Cleveland Clinic that will benefit the Heart and Vascular Institute and the Cleveland Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism at the Children’s Hospital, Shaker Campus.

In addition, the Duvin family and their friends established an endowed scholar-ship in memory of their son, Scott, at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medi-cine at Case Western Reserve University.

This past fall, they awarded the first scholarship to a medical student.

Helping ChildrenMrs. Duvin says their gift to the Center for Autism, which will help fund the expansion of its physical facilities, was important to her because she has seen firsthand, as a volunteer, that the Center is overcrowded. She is hopeful that the expansion will allow the Center to help more children with autism, providing specially designed services and support.

“What’s amazing to me is that the staff comes in every morning, year round, and they’re like sunshine for these children. They’re truly heroic.”

Mrs. Duvin says it is exciting to wit-ness how the children progress. She recalls a 3-year-old boy who had great difficulty sitting still to participate in activities. After being away for a month, Mrs. Duvin returned to find that the boy had visibly progressed and could sit still to work and focus.

“He was unbelievable,” she recalls. “He just grew by leaps and bounds.”

Mr. Duvin says he and his wife decid-ed to contribute to the new Heart and Vascular Institute, slated for completion in 2008, because Cleveland Clinic is the “most renowned heart hospital in the world and we know what an important project the new heart center is. We’re just glad to be a small part of a project that is so huge.”

Newfound JoyRecently, Mr. Duvin says he and his wife have been making a conscious effort to savor life more, carving out time to travel and enjoy their Florida home on Sanibel Island.

You might even say that Cleveland Clin-ic had a little something to do with Mr. Duvin’s new-found joie de vivre. Though Cleveland Clinic didn’t save his life, it did return him to his active lifestyle, admits the attorney, who turned to Cleveland Clinic orthopaedic surgeon Mark Froim-son, M.D., several months ago when he needed knee replacement surgery.

“Before the surgery, my knee prob-lem had stopped me from doing almost everything that was recreational and enjoyable,” he recalls. “It had stopped me from playing golf. It had stopped me from exercising. I couldn’t even take walks. It had really impaired my life, and now it’s all coming back to me.”

Duvins’ $1 million gift benefits Heart and Vascular Institute, Center for Autism

Philanthropists Find Joie de Vivre

Robert Duvin laughs when he admits that he and his wife, Darlene, aren’t your typical Cleveland Clinic donors.

“We haven’t gone through a heart crisis or cancer crisis and come out on the other side,” explains Mr. Duvin, a renowned labor attorney who has provided legal counsel to Cleveland Clinic for more than 15 years.

The new Heart and Vascular Institute will benefit from the generosity of a $1 million gift from The Plain Dealer and a $1 million gift from AT&T Ohio and the AT&T Foundation (formerly SBC).

The Plain Dealer’s $1 million donation supports the construction of the Heart and Vascular Institute Resource and Information Center while the $1 million donation from AT&T Ohio and the AT&T Foundation supports the new Resource and Information Center programmatic efforts.

According to Alex Machaskee, Publisher, President and CEO of The Plain Dealer, “We’re proud to be part of what Cleveland Clinic does for the good of our region. The stature of the new Heart and Vascular Institute and the local and regional value it will have in fueling our economic engine make it a vital resource for Cleveland.”

Resource and Information CenterThe Resource and Information Center will offer visiting patients and their families both education and support. Currently, visitors have access to basic phone service so they can call for inquiries and updates. AT&T’s gift will expand on this system by supporting a dedicated resource nurse and phone line, as well as Web mail services. Visitors can learn more about health issues through enhanced educational materials and classes.

“The gift from AT&T fosters Cleveland Clinic’s continued efforts to provide patients and their families with the comprehensive information and support services they need to complement their medical care,” Dr. Cosgrove says.

Patients of the institute, who numbered more than 200,000 in 2005, and their families often leave their homes and support systems when seeking out the best medical care, and the new center aims to bolster on-site support services.

“AT&T Ohio is proud to support the technology needs of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic to aid in providing the communication and education resources for patients and their families,” said Connie Browning, president, AT&T Ohio. “We are committed to supporting programs and services that help strengthen and make a difference in the communities in which we serve.”

The new institute and its resource center, to be completed in 2008, are central to the expansion currently in progress at Cleveland Clinic.

“AT&T Ohio is proud to support the technology needs of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic to aid in providing the communication and education resources for patients and their families,” says Connie Browning, president, AT&T Ohio. “We are committed to supporting programs and services that help strengthen and make a difference in the communities in which we serve.”

DeBartolo Family Compassion Crosses Generations$2 MILLION TO SUPPORT COLON CANCER RESEARCH

“I am keenly aware of the public health need for regular colonoscopy screenings and I want to do my part to advance the diagnosis and treatment options for patients and families.” – “Eddie” DeBartolo Jr.

Left to right: Victor Fazio, Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery and James Church, M.D., Vice Chairman, Department of Colorectal Surgery work together in the fight against colon cancer.

FIGHTING COLON CANCERThe donation from Candy and Eddie and their company, DeBartolo Holdings, LLC, has been applied to the DeBartolo Fund for Data Mining – a research fund focusing on colon cancer research. The database has launched several sig-nificant related research projects, including an investigation of polyposis, or the forma-tion of polyps, mushroom-shaped growths that can potentially become cancerous. Because Cleveland Clinic sees more colon cancer patients than any other non-cancer specific institution in the United States, the DeBartolos’ gift will benefit many people, says Eddie’s doctor, renowned colonoscopist and colorectal surgeon James Church, M.D., Vice Chairman, Department of Colorectal Surgery.

WORTHY MISSION“It is our mission to cure or wipe out disease where possible, and if neither cure nor erad-ication can be achieved, then we work to improve the lives of our patients and fellow humans. “We are committed to making the very best use of the opportunities that this gift has afforded us in helping thousands, if not tens of thousands,” Dr. Church says. Victor Fazio, Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery, calls it a privilege to receive such incredible support from the DeBartolo Family. He considers Eddie and Candy partners in the fight against cancer. “Together, we will continue to investigate this dreaded disease, encourage the public to find an importance in screening, and assist those who need surgical interven-tion,” Dr. Fazio says.

The DeBartolos’ success began with the keen entrepreneurial instincts of Edward DeBartolo Sr. He could see ahead, where the trends were and what people would want. In 1950, when stores with interconnecting hallways were still a novelty, he started build-ing them all over the city. Shopping malls, now a common trapping of most cities, built the DeBartolo name. Edward’s son,“Eddie” DeBartolo Jr., also believes in acting on opportunity, particu-larly when it comes to battling disease. He and his wife Candy have given more than $2 million to help fund colon cancer research at the Cleveland Clinic Digestive Disease Center. “I am keenly aware of the public health need for regular colonoscopy screenings as polyps, a major warning sign for cancer, can be detected and removed,” Eddie says. “I want to do my part to advance the diagnosis and treatment options for patients and fam-ilies,” he adds.

ROSENTHAL FAMILY FOUNDATION GIVES $3 MILLION TO BENEFIT CLEVELAND CLINIC HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE

A $3 million gift from the Leighton A. Rosenthal Family Foundation supports Cleveland Clinic’s new Heart and Vascular Institute. The gift was made to honor Mr. and Mrs. Leighton A. Rosenthal by their two daughters, Cynthia Boardman of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Jane Horvitz, of Shaker Heights, Ohio.

“It meant a lot to our parents,” Mrs. Horvitz says. She adds that giving is natural. “I was raised that way. My grandfather and my father taught us if you were lucky enough to have a lot, you should give a lot.”

Mrs. Horvitz and her husband Michael have two daughters who share in this family tradition of philanthropy. Mrs. Horvitz and her husband give their children weekly allowances and encourage them to help others. “I give them enough to give to others, like the Humane Society,” she says.

Exemplary CareIn their lifetimes, Mr. and Mrs. Rosenthal were grateful for the care they had received at Cleveland Clinic. Mr. Rosenthal was treated at Cleveland Clinic by Mehdi Razavi, M.D., a car-diologist, William Ruschhaupt, M.D., a vascular

specialist, and Floyd D. Loop, M.D., a cardiothoracic surgeon and formerly Cleveland Clinic’s Chief Executive Officer. Through that experience, Mr. Rosenthal and his wife, Honey, became loyal supporters and benefac-tors of Cleveland Clinic.

Mr. Rosenthal, who passed away in 2003, was the Chief Executive Officer of Work Wear Corp., a Cleveland-based manu-facturer of work clothing found-ed by his father. Mrs. Rosenthal passed on in December 2005. She had been on the Women’s Committee of the Cleveland

Orchestra, volunteered at the Goodrich-Gannett Neighborhood Center, and was on the Board of the Western Reserve Historical Society.

CLEVELAND CLINIC CATALYST 2005 ANNUAL REPORT

William Kunnath weighed 350 to 400 pounds virtually his entire adult life, despite trying all the diets and exercising. He was lucky that he never developed the serious health consequences of morbid obesity – such as hypertension and dia-betes – which he attributes to working out four or five times a week.

“As a former insurance company president, I know how to read mortality and actuarial tables very well,” says Mr. Kunnath, now 72, with characteristic humor.

He knows that there aren’t too many 387-pound 70-year-olds walking around. The reality finally hit him hard, and Cleveland Clinic was there to help.

Forging a RelationshipMr. Kunnath and his wife, Vera, had been aware of Cleveland Clinic since their college days in Michigan, when their friends in medical school dreamed of being accepted to Cleveland Clinic’s residency program.

But their relationship was forged when Mrs. Kunnath was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a chronic disorder that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal system. Living in Port St. Lucie, Fla., they researched Cleveland Clinic Florida and found a specialist in Crohn’s dis-ease. Subsequently, Mrs. Kunnath underwent successful surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston in 2001 with colorectal surgeon Eric G. Weiss, M.D.

The professional and empathetic care she received prompted Mr. Kunnath to have his physical at Cleveland Clinic. Doctors recom-mended gastric bypass surgery.

A New BodyGeneral Surgeon Raul J. Rosenthal, M.D., was willing to perform gastric bypass surgery, even though Mr. Kunnath’s age (69) could be consid-ered too advanced by other practitioners.

In 2003, at 387 pounds, Mr. Kunnath under-went gastric bypass surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston. He subsequently shed 200 pounds from his 5’11” frame.

“Thanks to Dr. Rosenthal, I have a new body,” he says.

Gifts that Give BackTheir series of successful experiences at Cleve-land Clinic Florida led the Kunnaths to make an outright gift of $10,000.

After making this donation, they decided to take the next step. They set up a $1 million gift annuity benefitting Cleveland Clinic Florida Weston’s Bariatric Institute. They wanted to help fund advancements to help patients whose obesity was interfering with their health.

The work Mr. Kunnath has done over his life-time makes these gifts possible. He refers to him-self as a “serial entrepreneur” who started and managed a variety of businesses, though Mrs. Kunnath teases that “he just can’t keep a job.”

“We have a fairly comfortable financial posi-tion, and we thought an annuity would be perfect, a very comfortable way of gifting,” explains Mr. Kunnath. “The annuity provides the same kind of financial results as investing it ourselves, and at the same time does something positive for the institution.”

Acid Test of PhilanthropyHow do the Kunnaths judge if giving was a good decision?“The acid test of philanthropy is to look at how you feel about your contribution five years after making it,” Mr. Kunnath says.

“Looking back, it was an excellent decision; we are very satisfied with what is being done with our gift.”

Rizk Family Memorial Gift Benefits Dialysis Unit, Airway Center

“Many, and I mean many in the MICU where Mrs. Rizk spent a big chunk of her time, dialysis and the Respiratory Special Care Unit where she practically lived worked as a single unit to make her better,” he says.

As Mrs. Rizk’s health improved, clinicians took special measures. Cleveland Clinic surgeons successfully performed a high-risk surgery to fix the TE fistulas, which extended her life.

Finally she was well enough to live at home. The family was elated.

Doctors were changed by the experience too. Dr. Gildea says caring for Mrs. Rizk and working with her family was “one of the most challenging and professionally rewarding and enlight-ening periods in my career.”

“I suspect hundreds of Cleveland Clinic employees have par-ticipated in Mrs. Rizk’s recovery,” he adds.

A Family’s WishIn Laurice Rizk’s honor, her family chose to support Cleveland Clinic with a $50,000 gift to the Center for Major Airway Dis-eases and the Dialysis Unit, as these areas were instrumental in her care.

Among the many who cared for Mrs. Rizk, physicians included Dr. Arroliga, who managed and maintained Mrs. Rizk’s home care and Emil Paganini, M.D., Section Head, Dialysis and Extracorporeal Therapy in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension, who arranged for Mrs. Rizk to come to the hospital for regular dialysis.

The individualized care Mrs. Rizk received helped extend her life another two-and-a-half years.

“It was because of Cleveland Clinic’s mission of compassion to heal the sick through knowledge, research and education that Mom was able to live longer. We are so grateful,” Kelley says.

Even after spending over a year in the hospital, Laurice Rizk regularly wore ruby red lipstick. This unexpected show of spirit made her Cleveland Clinic doctors and nurses laugh.

Despite being septic and sick much of the time, she made incredible recoveries.

“The doctors were always amazed,” her daughter, Kelley Rizk says. “They would say, ‘This lady must be somebody special.’ As much as they could do clinically for her, they had to look at her will – the human side of her healing,” she adds.

Turn of EventsIn July, 2000, Mrs. Rizk rushed to Cleveland Clinic. Her lungs had failed from episodes of acute respiratory distress. Her kidneys weren’t functioning properly. She had two tracheal esophageal (TE) fistulas, holes that had formed between her trachea and her esophagus that prevented her from eating normally, and which made simple care very risky, according to Thomas Gildea, M.D., in the department of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine.

“Cleveland Clinic saved her life. They turned her around,” Kelley says.

Mrs. Rizk’s husband and children visited regularly. Her daughters and sons alternated nights staying in the hospital room with her and Kelley quit her job as an engineer to be with her mother full-time.

“Cleveland Clinic was our address, our home address, for a long time,” Kelley says.

Dialysis technicians, nurses in the medical inten-sive care unit (MICU), physical and respiratory therapists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease clinicians such as Susan Rehm, M.D., and many more did the job, according to Alejan-dro Arroliga, M.D., in the department of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine.

Laurice Rizk, a long-time patient at Cleveland Clinic demonstrated her strong spirit with the red lipstick she regularly wore during her year-long hospital stay.

Immunological disorders are among the most myste-rious, devastating diseases that perplex and challenge researchers today. With an understanding of the need for thoughtful, engaged study by dedicated experts, The Richard J. Fasenmyer Foundation recently designated a $5 million gift to establish The Richard J. Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology at Cleveland Clinic.

The center is expanding Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to the investigation of immunological diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and vascular inflammatory disease (vasculitis). Unlocking the mechanisms of these diseases to find better therapies is one part of its mission. Another is to educate other researchers and attract young tal-ented doctors to continue this work of medical and social responsibility in years to come.

Establishing the CenterIn 1999, the Fasenmyer Foundation laid the cornerstone for the new center with a gift of $1.5 million that established the R.J. Fasenmyer Chair in Clinical Immunology. The current chair, Leonard H. Calabrese, D.O., Vice Chairman, Rheumatic and Immunologic Diseases, knew Richard J. Fasenmyer for years before his passing in December 2002.

“Richard J. Fasenmyer was a visionary who was dedi-cated to advancing the areas of HIV and other chronic and globally formidable diseases. He recognized the impor-tance of time that is needed for intellectual pursuits,” says Dr. Calabrese.

Tangible ResultsWith this support, he says he and his team are making significant progress in research and academic outlook while pursuing a grander plan to create a network with other physicians.

“It has helped us further patient care, enhance research and promote teaching, while raising awareness in the pub-lic at large,” he says.

“In just the last few months, we have created an HIV fellowship to encourage physicians to study and dedicate their careers to immunological research. We’ve estab-lished an annual lectureship and have formed partner-ships between the center and other agencies, such as the AIDS Taskforce and the Free Clinic.”

Richard J. Fasenmyer was a Cleveland-area industrialist known not only as a brilliant businessman, but also as a man who was kind-hearted and generous. He founded RJF International Corporation, a world leader in the manufac-ture and distribution of interior wall coverings, industrial matting products, and specialty films. Medicine, particu-larly the field of immune-deficiency diseases, was one of Mr. Fasenmyer’s many and diverse philanthropic interests.

Dear Friends,

Thanks to supporters like you, 2005 was another record-breaking year for Cleveland Clinic philanthropy. Donations exceeded $149 million, creating exciting new opportunities in patient care, research and edu-cation and benefiting our community.

Since our early years, giving has fueled Cleveland Clinic’s mission as a not-for-profit academic med-ical center, providing us with the tools, equipment and facilities to work at the leading edge of medical innovation to ensure world-class care for every life.

Two projects under way are evidence of philanthropy’s impact on our mission. The Arnold and Sydell Miller Family Pavilion, made possible by Sydell Miller and her family, will serve as our new main entrance and the gateway to our health and wellness programs. A cornerstone of future growth, the Miller Family Pavilion will house the Heart and Vascular Institute, increasing our capacity by nearly 50 percent when it opens in 2008.

Another facility under construction will accommodate the Glickman Urological Institute and other programs. Like the Miller Family Pavilion, this facility will feature advanced technology and unique patient amenities.

Your support of Cleveland Clinic also strengthens surrounding communities. We provide in excess of $350 million in benefits, including uncompensated and charity care, to the community. But our reach extends beyond basic care. In 2005, we committed $10 million to Cleveland schools, launched a Science Internship Program to pair students with Cleveland Clinic researchers, and continued to expand our health screening and outreach programs, among other community-focused endeavors.

This record-breaking year has allowed us to expand the Heart and Vascular Institute and Glickman facility campaigns into an unprecedented $1.25 billion comprehensive public campaign. This campaign, Today’s Innovations, Tomorrow’s Healthcare, focuses on enhancing world-class patient care, research and education, while allowing us to continue expanding to serve greater numbers of patients. Led by more than 800 volunteers, the campaign will empower innovation and carry Cleveland Clinic into a new era of achievement. I invite you to learn more about the campaign by visiting clevelandclinic.org/giving.

Thank you for supporting Cleveland Clinic’s healthcare excellence.

Sincerely,

Robert E. Rich, Jr.

PYRAMID Legacy SocietyCLEVELAND CLINIC

Charitable estate planning supports Cleveland Clinic’s mission of world-class patient care, education and research, and also provides patients and friends with important current and future tax benefi ts. In 2005, many individuals and families named Cleveland Clinic as a benefi ciary of their wills, retirement plans or life insurance policies. Additionally, contributions through charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts continue to be an increasingly popular option for Clinic donors. The following individuals have confi rmed that they have made provisions for Cleveland Clinic in their estate and deferred giving plans and, therefore, qualify as PYRAMID Legacy Society members.
