Dear <salutation>,

Books give us powerful connections to other worlds, both real and imagined. They move and

motivate us, opening our minds and hearts to laughter, empathy, inspiration and joy. Your love

for your favorite book is something you carry with you for life.

Sharing your love for books is as easy as making a gift to Schlow Centre Region Library.

Schlow welcomes everyone in our community to use our vast resources at no charge. Books,

fi lms, computers, technology, training, discussions, storytimes, and more make Schlow a

destination for nearly 320,000 people every year.

As demand for Schlow’s services grows, we need support from library patrons like you. Since

2008, the library has lost $774,000 in state aid due to budget cuts. Because of your generous

support, the library can provide resources like e-books and our children’s programs despite our

community’s growing demand.

Your tax-deductible gift to Schlow will help us maintain our hours of operation, continue our

popular programs, and purchase the new materials that our patrons rely on. Your support will

be recognized on our Honor Roll of Donors at www.supportschlow.org, and makes you eligible

for special events and communications as one of our valued supporters.

Thank you for considering a gift that will enrich our community. Please update your email

address on the enclosed form so we can keep you informed on how your gift is making a

difference.

Sincerely,

Catherine Alloway, Library Director

Dear <salutation>,

Healthy communities are like farms, gardens, and

woodlands: they need certain basics to grow.

Libraries help your community prosper by planting seeds of lifelong

learning, fertilizing connections between people, and shedding light on ideas and

resources. Libraries do this inside a physical building and also online with the world.

Your donation to the countywide appeal will keep libraries open and

vibrant, buzzing with programs, classes, and resources. Unlike other states and counties, the

libraries in Wayne County depend on private gifts to meet half of their operating needs each year.

Even small gifts matter, like single drops of rain from a storm add up to keep roots fresh. You can

choose to give once, or you can make small gifts over the course of a year that will add up. Just $5 or $10

every month will sustain us. Visit our homepage at www.waynelibraries.org to become a Sustaining Donor

by setting up a direct debit from your bank account on a schedule that you choose.

If giving by check, you can choose to give to operating needs, to a special technology fund we have established,

or to both, because both are important. One focuses your gift to meeting present needs, the other focuses

on the future. The role of technology in libraries is growing, not waning, as the Internet becomes a utility

for education, exploration, economic opportunity, and even economic necessity as job applications and state

benefits shift to online access instead of paper. Libraries are the community gardens for technology access,

providing bandwidth, computers, and staff assistance. Donations to the Tech Fund will help all seven libraries

meet the need for equipment, resources, and training into the future, wherever the technology goes. You’ll see

on the donation slip that you can designate your donation to one or more libraries, to countywide services,

and/or to the technology fund.

We look forward to counting you as a supporter of Wayne Library Alliance this year!

Sincerely,

Louis LaBarWayne Library Alliance Board President

Dear <salutation>,

Last year, more than 27,000 people from our community visited the Schuylkill Valley Community Library – mothers

sharing story time with their children, job seekers using our computers, teens working on school projects, and senior

citizens socializing in our community space.

Beyond books: Technology at the library

The library provides access to computers with Internet and printers for anyone in our community who needs them.

We also have several iPads, and we are always striving to keep up with technology.

Did you know that the Schuylkill Valley Community Library has a 3D printer? As we learn to use this cutting-edge

technology, children in our community learn along with us. We’re excited to see what the printer can do, and even

more excited to ignite the spark of learning in children.

The 3D printer is part of our “media room” with tools for photography, video, and graphic design, including:

• A green screen and lighting for video

• A machine that converts VHS tapes to DVD

• Access to Adobe Creative Suite, professional graphic design software

• A light box for taking professional-quality photos

For school projects and presentations, or to preserve personal memories, these resources teach skills that both

children and adults can use throughout their careers and lives.

Dear <Salutation>,

What if I told you that your library card is the most valuable card in your wallet?

Not only does your Thomas Beaver Free Library card provide you with access to the latest bestsellers, traditional classics, and an array of

opportunities beyond our book stacks, it serves as a community resource for residents of all ages—all at no cost.

With your library card, you can:

· Access online resources, like important forms, job listings, and tax documents, through one of our public computers or laptops

· Receive one-on-one training on your personal e-reader or tablet

· Connect with friends at Bookworms Book Club, Mill Street Writers, or our new Bridge Club

· Download audio books for your morning commute or family road trip

· Develop the literacy skills of the youngest members of your family through programs for children and young readers

· Send your toddlers to Story Time or Music and Movement

What other card in your wallet offers so much to so many?

With your annual support, the library can continue to provide the free resources, tools, and programs that benefit you and all residents in

Montour County. We rely on financial contributions from members of our community to continually expand our offerings and activities for you,

your family, and your neighbors.

Will you help us keep the “free” in Thomas Beaver Free Library by making a donation this year?

· While every gift makes an impact, your donation will be maximized if you contribute during Raise the Region March 9-10.

Through this community-wide fundraising initiative, your gift could be matched to allocate even more dollars directly to our

library.

· Or, if you prefer, you can return the enclosed envelope with your contribution today.

Your support is important to maintaining Thomas Beaver Free Library as a valuable resource in our community.

A Community Newsletter from North Pocono Public Library

1315 Church St., Moscow | www.lclshome.org/npocono Fall 2013

The North Pocono Public Library recently achieved a major milestone with the Grand Opening of a new 8,400-square-foot facility on a nine-acre parcel in the center of the North Pocono community. We have worked carefully and with purpose to create a welcoming environment where emerging technologies co-exist comfortably with long-standing, traditional library services.

Thanks to contributions from corporate sponsors, loyal patrons and generous families, we have reached 85% of our $3.2 million goal for the Building for Today, Investing for Tomorrow capital campaign. With $2.7 million raised, we have successfully built our new facility, moved our inventory and welcomed the public through our grand opening on June 22nd.

The beautiful new facility has something for everyone, from a children’s area with a 10-foot reading tree for our littlest patrons, to a dedicated Young Adult space, to a 90-seat community room for use by the library’s growing list of programs (see the list to the left) and by community groups.

As you can see, the North Pocono Public Library is about so much more than just books. It is our mission to promote literacy, strengthen families, and provide a sense of community within our region. As a local resident with so much to gain from the library’s services, you are an important part of our equation.

We are counting on your support to ensure NPPL remains a sustainable asset that enriches the lives of people in our community. There are still opportunities to help raise our last $500,000 for our campaign, which will help accelerate our ability to make the facility debt-free. Perhaps even more importantly, we’re in need of your donations and participation on a smaller but long-term scale to ensure that NPPL remains a cornerstone of our community year after year.

Please consider making a gift this year – and every year – as we launch our annual fund. Read inside for ways you can show your support.

If you haven’t already visited the new library, come in to take advantage of the many programs, services and activities it has to offer. And, in the traditional library sense, be sure to check out a book or two, too.

Dear <salutation>,

The future starts at our libraries, now more than ever. We aren’t just books and computers waiting quietly, we are actively partnering with others to improve the local economy, health, and lifelong learning.

To help small businesses and entrepreneurs, we’ve launched “Getting out of your foxhole.” These events move around the county, encouraging folks to meet up, ask questions, share ideas, and learn how others succeed in today’s economy. As part of this effort, please join us on October 21st, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for a Business Showcase: Invisible Biz edition. Discover local people who are providing goods and services but are off the beaten path. The Showcase will be held at the Park Street Complex, 648 Park Street, Honesdale, and is presented in partnership with the Wayne County Commissioners, the Chamber of the Northern Poconos, and WEDCO.

Here are more exciting ways to satisfy your curiosity at our libraries: • Need inspiration for a new career path? Check out the Hawley Library’s Unique Pathways program

featuring speakers whose own careers have taken unexpected directions.

• Creativity and construction combine at the Community Library in Hamlin with its Lego Club.

• Launching interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) was easy at the Bethany Library where 5th-8th graders built and fired their own rockets, and everyone can play with STEM materials.

• After a long absence, Pleasant Mount Library again offers children’s storytime and playtime, bringing early learning and mom mental health closer to home.

• Lifelong learning happens at Northern Wayne Library with monthly programs on a variety of topics from local history to Internet fraud, canning and herbs to crafting.

• Technology took a major boost in Newfoundland this year where the library offers four new computers and three new laptops as well as wireless Internet.

• Connecting across generations to something completely fun, artistic and expressive, the WCPL in Honesdale is holding a mini Comic Con (comic book convention) in October.

These diverse and wide-reaching programs are made possible by the same people who enjoy them: you, and other generous individuals, families, and businesses who believe in the value of a strong community library.

Your generosity has helped keep our libraries strong and successful. Increasing your contribution if you can will help the curious of all ages and contribute to a brighter future for us all.

Sincerely,

Amanda Schmalzle Wayne Library Alliance Board President

“We knew we needed to raise a substantial amount of money over a period of time. We knew it couldn’t be done easily. We’ve got a board of directors that all have full-time jobs. They can’t be out there soliciting and making phone calls. We also don’t have the

experience. We knew we needed a professional to help us and to show us the way. ˮ
