ObjectivesAfter the lesson, students should be able

to perform the following tasks:

– Identify the parts of a CAT5 network cable

– Identify the two wiring schemes of CAT5

– Be able to make a functioning CAT5 cable

– Be able to test a CAT5 cable

CAT5 Wiring SchemesThere isn’t difference between 568A or 568B concerning connectivity or performance just as long as both ends of the cable are of the same wiring scheme

568A: Commonly used in government/ federal buildings and some large commercial installations

568B: This is the most commonly used wiring scheme and found in most residential installations

568B

Making a CAT5 Cable1. Use the wire cutters to score the cable and remove the

jacket2. Use the green pull string to expose 1 inch of wire3. Then cut the wires with the wire cutter below the point of

the original score4. Use the wire cutters to cut the excess jacket and shielding

Page 9: CAT5 Cables

Making a CAT5 Cable5. Unwind the 4 pairs of wires6. Straighten out each wire and order the pairs according to

your wiring scheme7. Cut the wires, leaving approximately ¼ inch of wire8. Insert the wires into the RJ-45 jack9. Place the jack into the wire crimper and squeeze the crimper

handle

When TESTING a CAT5e Cable, you will need:

Testing A Cable

Working Cable

Open Pin

Reversed Pair

If you do not have

access to a cable

tester, you can

easily test a cable

with a verified

internet connection

and a computer.
