As Premier of the province of British Columbia, I am pleased to join with the students of Simon Fraser University in welcoming everyone to CaseIT 2011.

What began as a single university IT competition, has rapidly grown to become a world-renowned Management Information Systems business case competition, organized by and for undergraduate students. This will be another exciting four day event, with teams from around the world focused on solving a business case. This experience is sure to inspire and energize the participants and I wish them all the very best.

I would like to recognize the CaseIT Organizing Committee and sponsors of this event. I commend them for their hard work, leadership and generosity. The Organizing Committee has been working tirelessly for the past ten months toward these four days, and we all share much excitement that CaseIT 2011 is here! The eighth edition features a diverse field of top universities from across North America, Europe, and Asia. We are both glad and honoured to see many new universities competing in CaseIT as it only strengthens the notion that the competition has been and will continue to grow for years to come. Congratulations to all participating universities for advancing through the challenging Preliminary Round and onto CaseIT 2011!

Our annual theme, Analytics: Insight into the Future, will explore the steady evolution of Analytics and its increasing worth as a business tool. Organizations are able to gain significant insight from the data they mine and are better equipped to make smarter and more accurate decisions. By analyzing data from multiple sources, organizations attain a clearer, real-time picture of trends and correlations happening in their environment. It is clear that the ability to analyze data as it comes is invaluable, but is Analytics truly the key to business success? What does the future hold for Analytics? How are larger organizations such as IBM and CGI sustaining success through its use? These are simply a few questions that you will be able to ask at the CaseIT 2011 Discussion Panel on February 3rd at the iconic Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

OVERVIEW OFCASEITWHAT IS CASEIT?

CaseIT is part of the Management Information Systems Association (MISA) at Simon Fraser University (SFU), a student organization that focuses on the professional and social development of students studying MIS. CaseIT is an annual international undergraduate business case competition with an MIS focus designed to find the best and brightest in strategic IT case analysis. It is a forum where students from various backgrounds of IT and business can showcase their skills in areas such as teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking to a panel of industry professionals.

CASEIT’S BACKGROUND

Paul Cyr and Zephaniah Wong, both active members of SFU’s MISA, founded CaseIT in 2004. In its inception, CaseIT began as a competition between undergraduate teams within Simon Fraser University. Drawing from the success of the first competition, CaseIT 2005 Chair Jenny Chao expanded the competition to incorporate teams from Western Canada. In 2006, under the leadership of Andrew Kumar, CaseIT reached a national level through the inclusion of schools from all across Canada. Seeing the progression of the competition, Somnath Suresh pushed the envelope even further by leading CaseIT into an international competition by bringing teams from the United States and Denmark in 2007. Under the guidance of Rey Lim, CaseIT 2008 officially established itself as a global competition by bringing teams from four continents – North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Steven Chia, with a vision for sustainability, consolidated the reputation of CaseIT as an international undergraduate case competition as 16 teams from across the globe converged to Vancouver for a 24 hour case competition. To ensure that CaseIT brought only the best and brightest in strategic MIS case analysis, CaseIT 2010 Chair May Yu introduced the first ever Preliminary Round whilst maintaining the standard 24 hour case competition format.

CASEIT 2011

CaseIT 2011 will be a four-day event that encompasses more than just case analysis and presentation. The various events will allow its participants to gain a broader knowledge of today’s IT industry while expanding their network with other students and industry professionals throughout the beautiful city of Vancouver.

The structure of the competition consists of 16 teams competing against one another in a 24-hour case deliberation. The teams are divided into four pools with four teams in each pool. Teams will present within their respective pools in the first round. Only the top team from each pool will advance to the second and final round.

The Chair of CaseIT 2011 will welcome all participants, followed by a keynote from IBM Canada. Group pools will be announced and presentations order will be drawn.

The Discussion Panel is an opportunity to learn more about event sponsors and the theme of CaseIT 2011 – Analytics: Insight into the Future. The steady evolution of Analytics has now become revolutionary. Innovative techniques coupled with technological advancements have resulted in the large growth of Analytics. Organizations are able to gain significant insight from the data they mine and are better equipped to make smarter and more accurate decisions. Representatives from CIOVAN, IBM Canada, CGI Group Inc., SAS and SAP Business Objects will introduce their respective organizations and explain the benefits, risks, and potential they see behind the use of analytics. There will be an open floor for questions fielded from the audience towards the end of the discussion. Dr. Andrew Gemino from SFU Business will facilitate the panel discussion.

This unique networking event is sponsored by Wipro Technologies. Participants will be able to converse and make meaningful connections with representatives from CaseIT’s supporters. The Chair of CaseIT 2011 will welcome all participants, followed by networking between participants and participating team introductions throughout the night. The backdrop to this event is one of Vancouver’s most sustainable venues, also home to the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics.

COMPETITION

The competition will consist of the 24-hour deliberation on Friday, February 4th and presentations on Saturday, February 5th. On presentation day, teams will present their case analysis in Round 1 at SFU Harbour Centre. Round 1 will take place from 9:00AM to 11:30AM. Teams selected to advance from their respective pools will compete in Round 2 and the Lightning Round at the Segal Graduate School of Business. Winners will be announced at the CIOVAN Awards Banquet later in the evening.

Mark Emond has more than 15 years of experience in the technology industry, including nine with the IBM Business Analytics software segment. In his current role, leading the Business Analytics North American Marketing organization, Mark is responsible for marketing strategy, demand programs, channel marketing and marketing operations. ALMA BARRANCO-MENDOZAChief Information Officer, Trinity Western University

Dr. Alma Barranco-Mendoza is the Chief Information Officer at Trinity Western University, in Langley, BC, since December 2008. She is an experienced IT executive and entrepreneur with 22 years of working experience in a wide range of industries including higher ed., biomedical, software development, telecomm, legal, and biochemical industries in Canada and Mexico. Her main focus during her career has been in the leverage of technology for customer-focused, value-based business process optimization and simplification.

In addition to her role as CIO, she currently holds a faculty appointment in the Biotechnology and Computing Systems and Informatics departments at TWU. She is also one of the founding scholars and co-director of the Gender Studies Institute.

Her primary research interests are in the areas of medical bioinformatics and artificial intelligence. Specifically, she is interested in the analysis and development of algorithms to address multi-axial problems in decision support, e-learning, and risk assessment intelligent systems and their application to problems that deal with complex, multi-disciplinary datasuch as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, cancer, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Prior to her role at TWU, she was the Chief Knowledge Engineer and Manager of R&D at Knowledge Junction Systems, a software company focused on developing business intelligence solutions for the Telecommunications industry. Dr. Barranco-Mendoza has a B.Sc.Hons. and a M.Sc. in Computing Sc. and Mathematics from Trent University and a Ph.D. in Computing Sc. with focus on Artificial Intelligence from Simon Fraser University.


RICHARD KACHUREnterprise Information Management Competency Leader for Business Analytics and Optimization for Western Canada, IBM

Richard Kachur joined IBM Canada in 2003 and is currently the Enterprise Information Management Competency Leader for Business Analytics and Optimization for Western Canada, a major focus area for IBM today. Before joining IBM, Richard worked for several well-known companies including Anderson Consulting, Digital Equipment, Ernst &Young Cap Gemini and Data Warehousing Institute. He also served as a consultant to NASDAQ, KPMG and Ernst & Young.

On the personal side, Richard was born and grew up in Vancouver. He attended Langara College, British Columbia Institute of Technology and University of British Columbia where he graduated in History/ Political Science in 1974.

Richard is an avid sports enthusiast who enjoys all sports and likes to hone his skills on the ice playing Curling. He is also an author having published “Data Warehousing Management Handbook” and soon to be released “To Kill a King”. In his spare time, he enjoys reading history books or listening to classical music.

PAT FINERTYVice President of Alliance and Business Development, SAS

Pat Finerty is the Vice President of Alliances and Business Development for SAS Canada. Mr. Finerty is responsible for leading the development of new industry verticals, practice areas and business models to foster the Canadian subsidiary’s long-term growth.

Mr. Finerty has more than 18 years of experience in management consulting, services delivery, sales and executive leadership with organizations including the European Space Agency, Transrun Services, Loyalty Management Group and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Prior to his current role, Mr. Finerty ran SAS’ Customer Solutions, National Sales Support, Academic and Inside Sales Organizations.

DALE OLDFORDExecutive Consultant, Business Intelligence and Analytics Practice Lead, CGI Information Systems & Management Consultants Inc.

Dale Oldford is an Executive Consultant with CGI who leads the Business Intelligence and Analytics Practice in Western Canada. For the last 15 years he has focused his career on delivering Business Intelligence and Analytic solutions to a broad range of both public and private sector clients in Canada and the United States. These include clients in government, financial services, consumer goods, and energy sectors. He has enabled organizations in these sectors to realize significant value from applying business analytics to turn information into a competitive, strategic asset.

Date is a Project Management Institute certified Project Management Professional and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Schulich School of Business at York University where he specialized in Management Science. He completed his undergraduate degree in Business at Memorial University with a focus on Management Information Systems.


ADAM BINNIEVP Analytics Portfolio Strategist, SAP Business Objects

Adam Binnie is VP Analytics Portfolio Strategist within Solutions at SAP. Adam works across SAP to design an overall portfolio of analytical solutions that will delight and enhance every one of SAP’s Customers. Adam Binnie brings 20 years of technology management experience to SAP all of these in the field of Analytics, and has been responsible for innovations such as SAP StreamWork, SAP BusinessObjects Explorer and Crystal Reports for Java. Previously Adam Binnie has led the emerging strategies function at Business Objects SA, alliances solution management at Business Objects, developer solution management at Crystal Decisions, Inc as well as roles in Sales, Sales Consulting and Solution Consulting. SHAWN ZANGANEHCIO and COO, Western Industrial Manufacturing

Shawn Zanganeh is the CIO and COO at Western Industrial Manufacturing, which specializes in designing, engineering, manufacturing and installing superior customized steel equipment for the global mining, cement, oil, gas, petrochemical industry. Shawn is responsible for all company setup, research, strategic management, information systems, and over-all operations of the North American Offices.

Shawn’s previous work experience includes Program Manager/Management Consultant at Teck Resources, Executive Director of IT at Intrawest Real Estate/Playground, Senior Consultant at TELUS, CEO/Managing Director at SimPoSys Consulting Group, and a CIO at SynchroSERV/Bentall Capital Inc.

Shawn has over 20 years of professional experience working in various industries as an IT professional and/or executive. His vast expertise encompasses real estate, telecommunications, wireless technologies, mining, Oil and Gas, e-gaming, health care, nuclear energy, and education industries.

Shawn has received a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems Management from Hartford University, an MBA in Executive Management Consulting and Leadership from Royal Roads University and a CIO Certificate from Simon Fraser University. Shawn is currently a member of the CIO Leadership Development Program and sits in the board of director with CIOCAN LDP and SFU.

ANNE NASERCIO, WorkSafeBC

Anne Naser was appointed WorkSafeBC’s Chief Information Officer in March 2008. Between June 2005 and June 2009, she also held the position of Program Director of the Claims Management Solutions project.

The Claims Management Solutions system was implemented in May of 2009. It directly supports one of WorkSafeBC’s initiatives to provide a higher level of service to injured workers and families of fatally injured workers and employers. Anne won ComputerWorld Canada’s award for ‘IT Leader of the Year Large Enterprise Category’ in 2010.

Prior to Anne’s years at WorkSafeBC, she worked for Price WaterHouse Urwick in Melbourne, Austrialia and started her career at Canadian Airlines in Vancouver.

Anne has a degree from Simon Fraser University in Honours Economics and Computing Science. In her spare time, Anne can be found pursuing her passion for food. Whether it’s shopping for unique ingredients at local farmers’ markets, cooking up a storm for her friends and family, or dining at new restaurants, Anne is always on the search for the next culinary adventure.


MICHELE MORGANCIO, First West Credit Union

A seasoned executive with almost three decades of experience in senior IT positions, Michele Morgan is the Chief Information Officer for First West Credit Union. First West Union was formed on Jan. 1, 2010 by the merger of Valley First Credit Union and Envision Financial. Michele and her team are responsible for a full suite of technology services enabling First West and its brands Envision Financial and Valley First to achieve their visions of becoming leading financial institutions in British Columbia. In addition First West IT provides outsourced infrastructure and banking services to First Calgary Financial.

Michele joined First West from BC Hydro, where she held the role of senior vice president, smart metering and infrastructure. There she acted as executive lead for the program to provide smart metering technology to approximately 1.8 million customers. Michele was also the vice president and CIO for Teekay Shipping, a Vancouver-based marine transportation provider with a fleet of over 150 oil and natural gas tankers. In this role she provided corporate vision and business objectives that integrated strategic IT vision into the business.

Michele holds a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from the University of Ulster and an Executive MBA from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business. She has received executive leadership training from INSEAD in France and is an advisor for both the World Economic Forum and the MIS Advisory board for the Sauder School of Business. She is also a former director of the CIO Association of Canada.

BILL KLUGProgram Head of CST and CIT Diploma Programs at the British Columbia Institute of Technology

Bill Klug is currently the Program Head of CST and CIT Diploma Programs at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). With experience in contract, start-up and small to Fortune 500 corporate environments, Bill is a multi-faceted IT professional with fifteen years of experience in the credit union industry in the United States, Canada, and England. Also with five years of experience managing software development teams in medium size companies, his vast expertise encompasses design, development, integration, installation and training in the software industry.

Bill has received an MBA in the Executive Program at Simon Fraser University, an MSc in Computer Science at the University of Memphis, and an MSc in Vocational Education at the University of Wisconsin. Bill is currently researching enterprise-level hosting of virtual labs in teaching university computer science courses.


GARNET MILLERIBM Certified IT Architect, IBM Canada

Mr. Miller is an IBM Certified IT Architect with fourteen years of experience in all aspects of Business Intelligence systems development. Specializing in complex data integration Garnet has architected and implemented solutions that solve business problems using technology. As Business Intelligence has become a common capability for most companies Garnet has executed many projects that refocus a company’s BI program to ensure it is aligned with changing business needs and new technologies. This type of Strategy engagement focuses on translating the current business strategy into a target state BI environment, understanding the customer’s current BI environment, and then creating a transition plan to achieve the new environment.

Garnet is also experienced in more focused BI projects to solve a specific business or technology problem or define an Enterprise Reporting solutions. Working with a team typically comprised of the customer, subcontractor, and both on and off shore IBM people Garnet has demonstrated his ability to create a strategy and execute in a small to large scale Business Intelligence projects.

Being able to deliver a solution requires understanding the business constraints as well as the delivery team. Balancing the time, requirement, budgetary constraints with the skills and dynamics of the team quires strong communication with the PM, business and team leads. Garnet is able to speak with these groups and build a feasible roadmap.

DAVID BALDARELLIVice President of Enterprise Analytics and Corporate Development, Coast Capital Savings

David Baldarelli is the Vice President of Enterprise Analytics and Corporate Development with Coast Capital Savings since 2010. His duties include the management of business intelligence, customer analytics, credit risk analytics and corporate development. He has a passion for leveraging data and analysis to define strategy, understand performance and drive growth. David has over 15 years of experience in financial services with analytics roles. Before working for Coast Capital Savings, David was employed with HSBC from 2004 to 2010 and BMO from 1996 to 2004. David holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Economics; and an MBA from the Rotman School of Business, the University of Toronto. Science in 1974.


INGRID RAYPOLDVice President of BC Region, CGI

Ingrid Raypold joined CGI Information Systems and Management Consultants Inc. in 2004, building upon a successful career in the telecommunications and education sectors.

As Vice President of the BC Region, Ingrid uses her broad base of business skills and relationships to lead CGI’s growth in British Columbia, ensuring CGI’s full capabilities as Canada’s largest IT and Management Consulting firm are properly positioned to benefit BC clients and that all services are delivered effectively, profitably and in line with CGI’s ISO certified processes and frameworks.

Prior to her role at CGI, Ingrid held positions of VP External Relations, NAIT; SVP Marketing, Norigen Communications; SVP Marketing & Operations and SVP Customer Service, TELUS. Prior to leaving TELUS in 2000 (after a 25 year career), Ingrid was honored by Marketing Magazine as one of Canada’s top 10 marketers.

Ingrid is a graduate of the Harvard Business School International Advanced Management Program.

She has also supported the education, arts and business communities through her participation on many advisory committees, boards and councils and also coaches and mentors young leaders in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry.

TODD YULEDirector of IT Strategic Planning and Vendor Management, WorkSafeBC

Todd has held a variety of positions while employed at WorkSafeBC. His most recent duties place him as the Director responsible for IT Strategic Planning and Vendor Management. Todd has held a variety of other positions encompassing much of the applications delivery lifecycle, including account management, business development, vendor management, systems development, and quality assurance management.

Todd was one of the directors responsible for the replacement of WorkSafeBC’s entire legacy suite of claims management applications, with a single seamless end-to-end application. The vision of this project was to move WorkSafeBC into the industry forefront in terms of both business automation and proactive case management. Implemented in May of 2009, this multi-year business and system transformation initiative is the single biggest project ever undertaken at WorkSafeBC, impacting most of the organization’s 3000 employees and external stakeholders.

Todd holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia.

WorkSafeBC is responsible for providing workplace insurance to all 2 million workers and 170,000 employers within the Province of British Columbia. In doing so, WorkSafeBC adjudicates approximately 165,000 claims per year, and pays out over $1.1 billion in benefits.


JILL GAMBLENDirector of Banking Applications Renewal

Jill Gamblen is the Director, Banking Applications Renewal for Inventure Solutions Inc., a Vancity Company. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Jill provides strategic organizational leadership and is responsible for the successful delivery of a new Core Banking system.

Prior to joining Inventure, Jill worked with TELUS Communications Inc. where she served as Project Director, Managed Retail Banking and lead the delivery teams who provided a wide range of business solutions to the financial services sector. Previous to TELUS, Jill worked at CGI and Richmond Savings where she had a broad range of IT responsibilities.

Jill is a senior information technology professional with extensive experience in strategic planning, technology management, project management, and business development. These skills have been developed over her career spanning 25 years in the technology industry.

Throughout her career, Jill has been asked to undertake numerous mission critical projects that have involved multiple constituents with divergent views and has succeeded in creating win/win paradigms and business solutions that get approved and implemented. She is known for leading teams in creating innovative solutions by bridging business needs with emerging technology and seeing the solution through to implementation with a formal yet practical approach to project delivery.

DANNY BANDIERAManager of Technical Services and IT Operations, Pacific Blue Cross

Danny Bandiera is the Manager of Technical Services and IT Operations at Pacific Blue Cross. Danny plans, directs and manages the Technology Services department ensuring the development and implementation of cost-effective systems and efficient computer operations to meet current and future decision making requirements.

With nearly 2 million members covered, Pacific Blue Cross is the market leader and most trusted provider of Extended Health Care and Dental coverage to residents of British Columbia and through its subsidiary, Blue Cross Life, life insurance and disability income protection.

For over 20 years Danny has been influential in providing support and leadership to organizations in various industries which include banking, policing and insurance. Danny holds a diploma in IT Operations from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

Danny is a member of the Association for Computer Operations Management, Vancouver It Professionals, Business Continuity Disaster Recovery Professionals and the Canadian Information Processing Society.


GEOFF BAZIRAIT Manager, SAP Global IT – Infrastructure Services

Geoff is an IT Manager with SAP, currently responsible for leading Analytics and Business Intelligence projects within SAP’s Global IT organization.

Prior to his current role, Geoff led an Enterprise Systems Management team responsible for deployment, upgrade, performance management, and capacity planning for over 200 applications in all of Business Objects global data centers. One of his key achievements in 2007 included designing and establishing a 7x24x356 Network, Data Center and Systems monitoring Center. Prior to that, he led a team of over 30 engineers and analysts in the technical implementation of PeopleSoft CRM and a PeopleSoft Finance upgrade at Business Objects.

Geoff has a passion for new and emerging technologies. In 2001 he founded a software company that developed content management systems for Web Hosting Companies in Vancouver, BC. He holds a degree in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University (British Columbia) and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). He has delivered keynote speeches to 600+ audiences on technical subjects.

Geoff is also an active volunteer. Within SAP he sits on the Vancouver Leadership Team committee and actively helps to organize volunteer drives for the local food banks, office fun events, inter-department networking, and sustainability initiatives. Outside SAP he is a director for a non-profit organization that helps refugee families with literacy and counseling.

DERRICK NEUFIELDRichard IVEY School of Business

Derrick Neufeld is an associate professor of Information Systems at the Richard Ivey School of Business. He has a B.Comm (Honours) degree in Marketing from The University of Manitoba, the Certified Management Accounting (CMA) designation from the Society of Management Accountants of Canada, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from The University of Western Ontario. Professor Neufeld’s research examines how information technology enables virtual work. He has studied the effects and effectiveness of such phenomena as open source software development (team-working at a distance), remote leadership (managing at a distance), and cybercrime (breaking the law at a distance). His work has appeared in a variety of scholarly outlets including the Journal of Management Information Systems, the European Journal of Information Systems, and the Leadership Quarterly. One of his papers was recently distinguished as a “Best Publication of 2009” from across the IS discipline. Professor Neufeld is an active case writer and case teacher who loves the classroom. He has been honoured with teaching awards, from students at both The University of Western Ontario and The University of Manitoba. Neufeld’s current teaching assignment is focused primarily in Ivey’s Executive MBA program. Derrick is married to Colleen, and they have two teenage daughters named Zanna and Sydney. To relax he enjoys playing squash, updating his home theatre system, and refining his skills as an aspiring gourmet chocolatier.
