Traditional craftsmanship alive and well in East London This prestigious project involved the erection of a steel framed building with a featured tim-

ber domed roof. The building designed by Stewart Maclachlan of LBN incorporates an

innovative vaulted and domed semi-circular timber roof. Traditional craft hand skills were

used to manufacture the roof on site.

The domed ends themselves were manufactured from timber units of 25mm marine

plywood framework, and hundreds of small timber slats covering the inside and outside;

similar to the construction used in boat building. The finished inside is a beautiful array of

circular timber.

Everyone involved with this contract had to ensure the highest standards of quality, as the

tightest of tolerances were required for the domed end to meet the vaulted section

millimetre accurate. The result has been the production of a piece of work of the quality

not often seen on construction sites these days.

Congratulations go to all involved with this project, it is testament to what can be achieved

working toward a common goal with teamwork and co-operation.
