Established in 1956, Roger Williams University is set on a 143 acre campus in Bristol, Rhode Island, about a half hour from the state capital of Providence. Over 5,300 students ar enrolled at the University with over 63% living in on-campus housing. The campus has nine residence halls in addition to three libraries and several academic buildings that are occupied by students on a daily basis throughout the school year.

Heating Plant Decentralization

Roger Williams University started using Harsco Industrial Patterson-Kelley boilers in 1998 when the decision was made to decentralize the University’s heating plant. The University’s centralized heating plant operated at 75% efficiency to provide more than a dozen buildings with heat and used no. 6 oil, a heavy fuel oil with a high sulfur content that can corrode heating systems and contribute to increased sulphur dioxide (SOx) pollution. The heating system was also in need of some costly repairs.

The University explored many solutions and ultimately decided to install thirteen P-K THERMIFIC® boilers, N-series for building heat and D-series for domestic hot water heating, in several buildings across campus.

“Making the investment to install remote boilers instead of repairing the central heating plan was an excellent decision.” said John Tameo, Director of Facilities Operations at Roger Williams University.

Decentralizing the University’s heating plant allowed the University to save up to 30% on annual fuel costs. With the remote boilers, heating requirements could be adjusted for each building, instead of running the central heating plant under maximum conditions for all buildings.

Following this project, P-K boilers soon became a recommended choice by the RWU Facility Management department because of the boilers’ low nitrous oxide (NOx) rating and efficiency, along with the service and support of local Harsco Industrial Patterson-Kelley representative Kirschner Associates.

campus Growth

To meet the demands of its student population and improve overall student comfort, Roger Williams University recently expanded its facilities through retrofitting existing buildings. Retrofitting is a sustainable practice that involves making improvements to an existing building instead of demolishing it and starting from scratch. Improvements to existing buildings often include non-structural changes such as the installation of energy-saving automatic lighting systems and HVAC system upgrades.

When two high efficiency P-K MACH® boilers were retrofitted in Maple Hall and the Bayside Dorms, there was little effort required to fit the boilers through the doorway leading to the mechanical room and into place. In 2009, the University was able to receive more gas utility rebates than any other college or university in Rhode Island, essentially recouping the costs of the P-K boilers installed in the newly remodeled Admissions Building.

Through all of its construction initiatives, the University has continued its efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle. New buildings erected on the campus in recent years have been built to LEED® Silver standards, which measure building efficiency and environmental impact across a variety of categories. Debris from construction projects are responsively disposed of and even re-used when possible.

“We have boilers that were originally installed in 1998, but were relocated from the old buildings to be used in the new buildings.” explained Mr. Tameo.

A continuing relationship

Mr. Tameo and members of the Facility Services department at Roger Williams University have worked closely with Kirschner Associates over the past 14 years. To ensure optimal performance and continued fuel savings, Kirschner Associates employees assist with the routine maintenance on the boilers once a year and respond to requests from the Facility Services staff.

“Our first P-K boiler was installed over 12 years and we are still specifying P-K equipment and the same service company.” Said Mr. Tameo.
