Store Intelligence Case Study: AdColony Grew Publisher Inventory by 120 Percent with Sensor Tower Summary:AdColony is the leading mobile video advertising platform trusted by Fortune 500 brands and top grossing publishers on the App Store. In 2015, AdColony’s publishing team started using Sensor Tower to surface the top performing new mobile apps. What follows is an inside look at how AdColony grew its qualified leads by 120 percent with Sensor Tower.

The AdColony publishing team sought a platform that could provide up-to-date app rankings and key performance data such as download and revenue estimates. The goal was to leverage this data to create internal grades for new app releases that would help the team qualify potential new publishers. Identifying a metric on which to base its rankings was initially daunting, but, in working with Sensor Tower, the team developed its own KPI-based scoring system powered by Sensor Tower data.

During the 2016 Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that there are now more than two million active apps on the App Store. Sensor Tower analysts project that the App Store will be home to more than five million active apps by the end of 2020. With more and more new apps launching each day, AdColony needed a way to quickly surface which ones gain early traction in the marketplace. Enter Sensor Tower. The Store Intelligence platform from Sensor Tower features Top & Trending, which empowers users to quickly discover the fastest-growing apps by downloads or revenue. Slicing this data by numerous attributes (such as publishers that have previously bought ad units, apps currently in soft launch, or apps that have a video trailer) produces relevant, actionable information that answers the questions at hand. With Top & Trending, AdColony now spends more time making informed decisions and less time sifting through a sea of rankings.

“Getting started with Sensor Tower was easy and the product has come a long way since we first started using it. As a company that strives to be innovative in our own space, it’s great to work with a company that has a similar philosophy of rapid innovation,” says Ian Atkinson, VP of Business Development at AdColony. The publishing team at AdColony begins each day in Sensor Tower, reviewing Top & Trending charts to identify new publishers that can benefit from AdColony’s advertising technology. Throughout the day, the team uses Sensor Tower to monitor changes in the App Store and Google Play to prospect new opportunities. Most recently, the team started using Sensor Tower’s mobile advertising product, Ad Intelligence. “We use Ad Intelligence to cross-check our own market penetration among publishers, which in turn informs our marketing and business units. Having up-to-date information like this is key,” says Atkinson. Identifying the core metric to define success for the AdColony team was a challenge initially, but in working with Customer Success at Sensor Tower, the team created its own KPI using Sensor Tower data. The team now starts in Sensor Tower by downloading a CSV file of the top 10,000 apps worldwide. Using a simple pivot table in Excel, they can quickly highlight the top 100 publishers, which becomes their prospecting pool for the month.
