Be a Smart Test Taker

For most students mandatory state assessments bring unex-pected nervousness and test anxiety. To be successful in school, students must be capable of passing teacher, state and national assessments. As educators, we often ask ourselves what we can teach our students to improve their test taking skills. To do well on any test students must first study hard and be prepared. To further improve overall test performance, students should do the following: Get off to a good start by coming to school on-time, prepared and with everything that that they need to be successful on the test.

Before answering any questions develop a plan by quickly looking over the test.

Mark questions that they are unsure about with a dot or a light mark so that they may return to them later.

Use all of the time available

At Carver, a large portion of our continued success is dependent upon the outcome of our upcoming Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests and End of Instruction exams. Our teachers and staff con-tinue to emphasize the advantages of having smart test taking skills. As we prepare to enter into state testing, parents, please make it a point to discuss with your middle school student the importance of being a smart test taker. Remind him/her daily about the 4-steps to being a SMART test taker. As always, at Carver, we have an open door policy. Please feel free to call the school for any assistance or information that you may need. Carver is your school, and your support and involve-ment are critical to our continued success. Melissa J. It is hard to believe we have six weeks of school remaining for this year! We have been blessed with such a mild winter and beautiful spring that it makes one wonder what this summer has in store for Oklahoma. As we finish up the school year, I ask that you are watchful of Carver students crossing the parking lots as they exit vehicles or move toward waiting rides. Similar to parking lots in shopping areas, students can dart from in front of or behind parked cars at a moment’s notice. Please drive slowly through our parking lots as you watch for students potentially crossing the pathway of your vehicle. As spring approaches so does the threat of severe weather. Every school has to conduct certain safety drills on a monthly basis to help ensure student safety. During March and April we conduct our Disaster Drills that show students where to go during the day if severe weather is approaching. When we conduct these drills teachers also remind students of proper conduct to ensure all students safety. Remaining quiet enough to hear directions and then following the directions are two of the most important safety factors. Please cover school policy and general safety rules with your student to ensure that he/she is prepared for any drills or situations that might arise. As always if you have concerns regarding the safety or well-being of your student or any Carver student, do not hesitate to get in touch with myself or the grade level counselor! Carver Families,

We only have about 6 weeks of school left but there is a lot of action at Carver. Soccer is kick-

ing off for the first time at Carver, field trips are coming up and testing is around the corner.

The time of year also means that the new families with incoming 6th or 7th graders for next

school year have been notified. It is so exciting to hear from so many excited families about

their new Wildcat! Facebook was going crazy on the Friday before Spring Break.

Our last PTSA unit meeting will be on Tuesday, April 10th. One goal for PTSA this year was to

provide a few student-focused programs. We will have a presentation on “Interview Skills for

Your First Job”. Carver will provide refreshments prior to the meeting, so please come early and

bring the family. BTW students and parents are also invited to attend. The meeting will begin

at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Carver.

We have very exciting news from our Marquee Donation Drive. Just last week three Carver

families made very generous donations that helped us reach our goal of $4,000. Our next step

is to meet with TPS for a final review and then start the permitting process. We hope to see our

new marquee shortly after school is out. We will continue to send updates.

The PTSA and Foundation would like to thank all of the students and parents that assisted with

our Marquee Donation Drive mailing effort and to everyone that has donated to the project.

Great things are happening at Carver!

As we wrap up the school year we still have one of the best events of the school year to look

forward to. Carver Intercultural Evening (CIE) was started last year and is a fabulous family

event. The event builds on the Carver tradition of the Intercultural Interlude started by Ms.

Zaheer many years ago. CIE also supports the goal of MYP to develop internationally-minded

students.

Please stop by the office and buy advanced tickets for the “Treats from Around the World” din-

ner portion of the evening for $5. International Games will be $.50 per ticket, which will be sold

at the door. Families can stop by the culture booths and enjoy the entertainment at no cost.

7th Grade Kansas City Trip

The 7th grade students received their yellow permission slip for the end of the year trip to Kansas City on Friday May 11th . The cost of the trip is $135 which includes transportation, entrance to the park, lunch in the

park, “ Mystery Train” Show, dinner & gratuity.

Permission slip and all monies are due by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20th.

8th Grade Formal Tickets are on sale now through Friday, April 27th. Ticket prices are $15.00 for Carver students and $20.00 for APPROVED non-Carver students. Tickets include one 5x7 portrait. Tickets can be purchased in the main office from Ms. Clark or Mrs. Cooper. Please note that if your guest is a non-Carver student, the guest must be a TPS student in good standing and prior approval is required. For approval, the guest student and parent must complete the required application and have it completed by an administrator at the guest student's school before returning it. This form is due no later than April 18th at 4:00PM to Ms. Farrow in the main office. Limited scholarships are available, please contact Mr. Ehrle at ehrlero@tulsaschools.org.

Please read this important information so you can access your student(s) PowerSchool information.

On Friday evening April 13th, we will implement a new Single Sign On feature that allows a

parent to create their own individual log in and associate each of their students with that

account. This process will allow ‘split’ parents to have their own log in a not have to share

access. This change will also allow parent access through iPads and iPhones.

This change will affect all parent accounts and new account logins must be created.

• Starting Saturday morning, April 14th, parents/guardians will

have the ability to create an account that will allow you to

access all your students from a SINGLE LOGIN.

• You will be able to create your own User Names and

Passwords.

• Each Parent can create their own login to access their

respective child(ren).

You will need to go to the PowerSchool login page:

https://PowerSchool.Tulsaschools.org/Public or click on

the

PowerSchool link on your school’s or the TPS website.

You will see the following Login screen:

This is where you will setup access to ALL

your students. • Enter an E-Mail address – Note: The e-

mail address MUST be unique. If Parent/Guardians share the same e-mail address, you should only set up one par-ent access account.

• User Name (No apostrophes, and do not

use an email address). • Password (No apostrophes, and it must be

at least six characters) • Enter the Name of each Student you wish to associate

to your account. • Enter the Access ID (former User Name) and Access

Password for each student.

• Select your relationship to the student. 3. Click the Enter button when you have completed this link to all of your students. 4. When finished, you will receive this message.

logo listing your student family members.

• Select the appropriate name to change the page to that student’s information.

• The remaining process for viewing your student’s information has not changed

What if you forget your login information?

On the login page click the link: Having Trouble Logging in?

If you forgot your Password:

• Fill in your User Name

• Fill in your E-Mail Address

• Hit Enter

The system will authenticate your information and send you a Security Token with

instructions on how to re-set your Password to the E-Mail address listed.

It is important to note that the Security Token sent is only good for 30 min-

utes. If the Parent/Guardian fails to reset the Password in that allotted

time, you will need to repeat the process.

If you forgot your User Name:

• Click on the Forgot User Name tab

• Enter your E-Mail Address

• Hit Enter

The system will authenticate your information and send you an E-Mail listing your

User Name.
