FOR Club Update By: Emma Landsly 

6th Grade      Wow! What a fabulous presentation on Rachel Joy Scott’s life! Presenter Michaela Simonds did an amazing job on telling the school about the terrible Columbine High School scenario. The shooting was very miserable as we heard in the presentation. Rachel Joy was also very inspirational when times are tough. She was inspiring when she stood up to people.       The school put together a FOR club. FOR means Friends of Rachel. FOR club members, Moe Altaher and Andrea Rebollido stated that at the last FOR club meeting, the club members talked about how to spread kindness to everyone. They came up with ideas to make the school and FOR club better! One of their ideas was to have “pep” for the school! On October 15th, 3 students from FOR club, Janine Aquino, Moe, and Andrea provided their school spirit by making girls basketball and boys volleyball signs for Pack the House. The FOR club has over 120 members and can’t wait for more to join. Go to Ms. Bianchi for details. Want to learn more about Rachel and her story? Go to www.rachelschallenge.org.

Orchestra Show By: Tina Alkayed 

6th Grade        Wow! What a great concert! The 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra did a fabulous job at their holiday concert! Do you want to know the songs they played?           Some of the songs were Swing Those Bells, the Incredibles, and many more. Chamber is also currently working on songs too, like Folk songs and Irish songs. Guess what? The Irish song was 8 pages long! The 6th grade Orchestra concert was a blast! They played songs like Prairie Fire, Concerto in G, and my personal favorite, Wraggle Taggle Gypsies. The Chamber Orchestra also played some songs for us like Chestnuts Roasting On an Open Fire, and Brazilian Sleigh Bells. Personally my favorite was Brazilian Sleigh Bells! Currently they are working on songs like Symphony number 8, Crocodile Rock, and Emperor Waltz!       Remember to stay tuned for upcoming concerts!     

Choir By: Sophia Marlow 

6th Grade     You may be interested in how us choir students learn our songs and memorize them. In choir it is split into two groups. They are the altos and the sopranos.You might have known this already, but the altos sing the lower part of a song and sopranos sing the higher part of a song. When we first learn our songs we sing some of the song without singing the words by humming the beat instead. 

 After, we sing one page of a song and repeat it until it’s great. Next, we add more and more pages until we reach the end. Last, but definitely not least, we sing the whole song over and over until perfection.       One of my favorite songs was a Michael Jackson medley of songs! I liked this song because Michael Jackson is one of my favorite artists and this song was very catchy! One of the most popular songs in the winter concert was “Fa la la la!”. Even though all the choirs sang it, the song was very popular. That is all about our winter concert! Thanks for reading! 

Culture Club ­ How Does Century Celebrate the 

Holidays? By:Sophia Marlow, Tina Alkayed, and

     Whoa! There are so many holidays that the students of Century celebrate. Some of these holidays are very interesting.You can learn the holidays at at the one and only, Culture Club!   Tina: مساء الخير And happy Eid! My name is Tina and I celebrate a holiday called Eid. We exchange gifts, we talk and have fun, and we eat tons of great food! We take a break from fasting, and we just have fun!  Emma: I celebrate Hanukkah because I am Jewish. Hanukkah has eight nights. In 2015, Hanukkah started on the night of 

December 6th. Hanukkah is celebrated because of the miracle of oil lasting for eight days instead of one. Jewish people eat 

foods with oil and cheese on Hanukkah because of this miracle. People light a menorah with candles and put it on their windowsill. Then, kids open up presents to celebrate!    Sophia: There is a holiday that some of us at Century celebrate, Christmas! We all know this holiday isn’t just about the presents,It’s about the birth of Jesus and celebrating this holiday with your family. A tradition my family does during the holidays is baking lots of cookies! (Some of them to give to Santa, of course.) All of us who celebrate Christmas like to put up a tree. But, this tree isn’t just any tree. It is a decorated pine tree.  It looks beautiful! Christmas is awesome!

6th Grade      Do you like arts and crafts? Well, you came to the right article! Did you know that art is not just making arts and crafts? You can also make professional art, too! I would like you to meet one of my friends, Caroline Hooks, who is an artist! 

 What pushed you to start making 

art? Caroline’s mom inspired her to start creating art. Art in Europe at the Art Museums also inspired her. 

  What kind of artwork do you like 

doing? Paintings of beautiful scenes and animals.  Why is this hobby interesting to 

you? The way Caroline sees things is through art. She sees life through art. 

 Will you be an artist when you get 

older? It depends if Caroline is still interested in being an artist, she shared with us.

IMSA Club By:Emma Landsly 

6th Grade     IMSA Club stands for the Illinois Math and Science Academy. IMSA is fun because you do experiments and learn a lot about science and math. You have to love math and science and be good at it to be in this club. 6th, 7th, and 8th graders participate in learning these subjects after school! This year, we 

talked about different types of triangles their details. Get ready 

to use mechanics, economics, math, and science in IMSA Club!   Although IMSA Club is super fun, you have to apply at the beginning of the year to join. Ask Mrs Hodgetts or Mrs. Fruendt for details!

February Holidays: Valentine’s Day By: Sophia Marlow 

6th Grade      You know that date, February 14. It is Valentine's Day! Did you know that Valentine's Day is also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine. Valentine's Day was first invented to celebrate a religious holiday. The person who created Valentine’s Day was known as Saint Valentine. A story of Saint Valentine is that he was imprisoned for holding weddings for soldiers that were not allowed to marry Christians. Legend has it that before Saint Valentine's execution he wrote a letter to his daughter saying “Your Valentine” to say goodbye. More than 62% of Americans celebrate Valentine's Day. Also, one billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent to people, more than every holiday, except Christmas. 220 million roses and more than 35 million heart­shaped boxes of chocolate are bought each year.      I hope you enjoyed your Valentine's Day! 

    

    

  

Groundhogs Day By:Tina Alkayed 

6th Grade     Did you know that Groundhog day recently passed? Well, it did! Punxsutawney Phil, coming from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, stated that Spring was coming early this year! Sounds good to you, right? Is that not enough proof for you? Well, Staten Island Chuck, another groundhog, also states that Spring is coming early this year!      A Groundhog hibernates during the winter, and comes out during spring. When the groundhog sees its shadow in the spring, it is a natural sign that 

spring is arriving. So we can now get ready for spring!! Aren’t you so excited for those April showers that will bring May flowers?   …..But what do May flowers bring?  PILGRIMS!  

Celebrating  Martin Luther King Jr.

     Martin Luther King, Junior was a great man. He was even great enough for the United States to make a fabulous holiday to honor him. He fought for civil rights. The Civil Rights movement was for racial equality. Dr. King brought even more attention to this issue when he gave his famous “I Had A Dream” speech.       You may also recognize the name Rosa Parks who made her statement when she refused to give up her seat starting the Montgomery Boycott during the Civil Rights Movement. King created a movement for a group of individuals who believed that segregation needed to end while making multiple speeches and peaceful demonstrations.       So, next year on January 16th, make sure to think about how much Martin Luther King, Jr fought and sacrificed for equality! !
