P&C News

P&C meeting.

Eight parents braved the cold and rainy weather to attend the P&C meeting on Tuesday night. While it was a small group we

discussed a range of topics from the merit selection process for the appointment of our new principal, non-scripture classes, the

upcoming Fathers Matter breakfast and second-hand uniform stall. Draft minutes of that meeting will be on the website soon. If

you have any queries or comments regarding the meeting please feel free to email us at [email protected] with ‘P&C’ in

the subject line.

Volunteers needed – Fathers Matter Breakfast

Our Annual Fathers Matter Breakfast will be held on Thursday, 4 September before school starting at 7.30am. We need lots of

mums to help prepare and serve breakfast so that the dads can enjoy the range of activities on offer with their children. If you

are able to volunteer please email the P&C at [email protected] with ‘Father’s Day’ in the subject line. We will also be

running a ‘100 club’ as we did at the ‘Mothers Matter Breakfast’. If you are able to donate a prize or have contacts in a local

business that would be willing to donate a prize please email the P&C at the above email address.

Second-Hand Uniform Sale

In Week 9 we will be holding a second-hand uniform sale at school. If you have any old uniform items that are in good condition

we will be collecting these in Week 7 (the week beginning September 1). Please don’t send items in prior to this date. More

details will follow in upcoming newsletters.

Bookclub

Thank you to Wendy Chan for her hard work as Bookclub coordinator over the past couple of years. Our bookworms at Carlton

PS have enjoyed receiving their orders thanks to Wendy and her band of volunteers. We are hoping to have a new Bookclub

coordinator in place very soon.

School Banking

Thankyou

Thank you to Naglaa Abdelfattah for her dedication to school banking over the past three years. Naglaa has been a school

banking coordinator since school banking started in 2011. We also thank Rachel Cortez for helping this year. We appreciate

their commitment to the role during their time as School Banking Coordinators.

Volunteers needed – School Banking

Do you have Tuesday mornings free? Are you interested in helping with school banking? It operates on Tuesday mornings from

9am to approximately 11am. Hopefully we will get a few new volunteers so each of our teams will only need to work in the

school bank once every three weeks. Training will be provided. Welcome to Biljana Catalano who has joined our team this

week. Please email [email protected] with ‘School Banking’ in the subject line if you are interested in helping out or

leave your contact details in the office and a School banking Coordinator will contact you.

Classroom Achievement awards – KJ winners again five weeks in a row

Congratulations to KJ who have won the award again this week. One class was only one banker behind KJ so they could be

winners next week. Well done KJ!

Silver Awards

Silver awards are presented to children when they have received 5 Bronze Awards = 50 tokens. A fantastic effort! Parents

are most welcome to attend the assembly to see their child receive this very special award. Congratulations to the following

students who will receive their silver awards at the assembly on the dates listed below.

There are 180 places available for students from across the school. Years 2 and 3 are targeted for this scheme however, students in years 4-6, who are not confident in swimming 25m in deep water, are also encouraged to attend. (It is worth noting that costs cover bus and pool entry only. No further free swimming instruction is available to students after Year 6). Notes have already gone home to all Years 2 and 3 students. If your child is in years 4-6 and you wish them to attend, they will receive a note next Monday. Please ensure any special requirements/medications or recent illnesses are noted. The cost is $47 and includes bus transport to and from Canterbury Aquatic Centre and Pool entry for the total of 9 days. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs Palmer (Class 2P).

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE 2014

The Countdown is on! Two weeks to go!

Congratulations to the 65 clever readers who have already completed the 2014 Premier's Reading Challenge. Well done to the

197 students who have begun their 2014 Student Reading Records; take up the challenge and finalise your list of books by 22nd

August.

The 2014 Challenge runs from 3 March to 22 August. Books read from 1 September 2013 can also count towards the 2014

Challenge.

Our School Library is a great supporter of the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Ms Phillips and Ms Afonso, our Teacher-Librarians,

can assist students to make PRC book selection easier. Also, students can use the Library computers at lunchtime to browse PRC

lists and books available.

The Challenge website is: www.premiersreadingchallenge.nsw.edu.au

Students register by using their DET username and password to logon and then completing their online student reading record.

Students who complete the Premier's Reading Challenge will receive a PRC Certificate and may appear in the PRC Gold and

Platinum Honour Roll. Those who complete the Challenge for four years receive a gold certificate and after seven years, a

platinum certificate. Rules, booklists and privacy information about the certificate and Honour Roll can be read on the website.

Happy reading and take up the Challenge!

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS KIDSMATTER INITIATIVE AT CARLTON

Students, staff and parents are encouraged to share their random acts of kindness with one another and

many of these kind acts will be published in the newsletter on a weekly basis as a celebration of the

wonderful feelings that being kind to one another brings.

Last Week’s Random Acts of Kindness:

Thank you to Dean who helped Hamza when he fell over in the playground.

Thank you to Rayan who gave Julia some pacer leads when she ran out.

Thank you to Michaela who always helps Ms Archer with cleaning up after Theragames.

Thank you to Sasah & Kitana who helped Ms Archer with cleaning up after an art class during their lunch time.

Thank you to Leo who kindly shared his whiteboard markers with class mates.

A huge thank you to those students who always take time during their recess and lunch to help put litter in the bin without being asked. It is very much appreciated.

Thank you to the two girls from kindergarten who found 30 dollars in the playground and handed it to the playground duty teacher. The money, which was for the book fair, belonged to a boy in year 1. He was very relieved to get it back.

Debating Recount

Inter-zone Final of the Sydney Schools Debating Competition- Sydney Region On Wednesday 6 August Carlton B team and Banksmeadow Public School debated on the topic “That sharks should be culled” and Carlton B team was the affirmative team, meaning that they agreed with the topic. On Tuesday, the day before the debate, team members Maya, Daniel, Natalie and Gary worked hard for the whole day to come up with strong points and examples. The topic was difficult, and everyone had to think hard to come up with convincing points, which was a challenge. After 20mins of brainstorming and thinking of a team-line and a definition, everyone started their speeches, researching to expand and prove their points and thinking of rebuttals. There was much laughter and talking but in the end we managed to pull together and finish off the main things. The day came. There were the nerves and everyone was scared and worried about the quality of the speeches. They all practised and read over their speeches, making sure everything was as good as it could be. Half an hour later, Banksmeadow Public School arrived. Forty minutes later, the adjudicator, Oliver Hillsmith, came and the debate commenced. All the speakers presented their speeches convincingly and strongly, doing the best they can. But there can only be one school that wins and after the adjudicator finished speaking, he announced that Banksmeadow Public School had won the debate. Carlton Public School B team was still happy, despite their first loss of their whole experience in debating. After the feedback, everyone helped themselves with light snacks. I would like to say congratulations to Banksmeadow for their victory, to Mrs Niko, Mrs Mateski and Miss Stergiou for their endless encouragement in the past and present, Miss Flowers for her time in helping the team research for their debate and congratulations to the B team for an outstanding job. Our Fabulous Gardening Club

The Gardening Club is a group of students who meet every Friday to do some gardening. We

have planted mint, spinach, snow peas and rocket lettuce. I think we should plant broccoli and

cherry tomatoes. These types of tomatoes would be a good choice because they grow fast, are

fun to grow and are less likely to attract pests. Broccoli would be good because it grows fast

and is very good for you.
