We are partnering with the Y in this exciting new community-
based initiative designed to increase personal engagement and
accountability for health within the local community.
Community members don’t have to belong to the Y in order to access
the health-related programs and services offered through our new
Healthy Living Center in Mandarin, which will be open every weekday.
Offerings include a regular calendar of health screenings, classes and
health education opportunities. We believe this increased access to
health and wellness resources will be a win-win for the community, for
the Y and for the growth of many Baptist Health services.
For example, a person who comes in for a screening will have
ready access to our care navigation for follow-up care, if needed.
If someone is interested in a primary care relationship, they can be
offered the opportunity to connect with interested providers in our
network. Patients can also be referred to the Healthy Living Center
by themselves or by a provider (such as patients newly diagnosed
with diabetes), where they may take advantage of health coaching
and nutrition education. Some may end up joining the Y to help them
sustain a healthier lifestyle.
We will be expanding our Healthy Living Centers initiative in the
coming months and look forward to sharing more details soon.
Our medical directorMedical leadership of the
Y Healthy Living Centers is
provided by Aristides Sastre, MD,
a family medicine physician with
Baptist Primary Care. Dr. Sastre
believes that empowering patients
with information that they can
apply to their everyday lives is at
the foundation of good health.

Patients no longer have to leave the area for advanced, life-saving treatments. To fight the devastating impact of stroke on patients
and families in Florida, Georgia and beyond, Baptist
Health and Lyerly Neurosurgery opened the Baptist
Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center in March to provide
advanced treatment of strokes, brain aneurysms and
other cerebrovascular conditions.
New Lyerly Neurosurgeons perform ground-breaking procedures Ricardo A. Hanel, MD, PhD, and Eric Sauvageau, MD, are highly trained
cerebrovascular neurosurgeons who have joined Baptist Health and
Lyerly Neurosurgery to lead the new Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center.
Dr. Hanel and Dr. Sauvageau treat all neurovascular conditions, and
specialize in ground-breaking, minimally invasive procedures to treat
aneurysms, including flow diverter technology, stenting and coiling,
as well as more traditional methods, such as clipping and bypasses.
Philipp Aldana, MD, medical director of the Lucy Gooding Children’s
Neurosurgery Center, said, “Dr. Hanel has been a critical member of our
Wolfson Children’s Neuroscience Institute team since 2007, working with us
to provide life-saving care to children with serious conditions like stroke due
to moyamoya syndrome and vascular malformations. We are fortunate to have
Dr. Hanel and Dr. Sauvageau on our Baptist Health and Wolfson team full-time,
which will benefit both children and adults throughout the Southeastern U.S.”
Neuro Interventional Suite to feature state-of-the-art technology Space in the Neuro Operating Room Suite in the Weaver Tower is being
transformed into a Neuro Interventional Suite. With an expected completion
date in June, the suite will feature $1.8 million Philips biplane angiography
technology. Until then, Dr. Hanel and Dr. Sauvageau are using the Pediatric
Cath Lab at Wolfson Children’s Hospital for all interventional procedures.
“Community hospitals don’t usually have access to the specialists and resources
needed to offer this type of program, but we are very fortunate to have both. The

Transfer Center expedites careOur new regional transfer
center serves as the single
point of contact and
streamlines the process for
connecting physicians and
coordinating the transfer of
stroke and cerebrovascular patients to Baptist Jacksonville
for their care.
New stroke liaisonDetmetiros McBride has joined
the Business Development Team
at Baptist Health as our new stroke
liaison dedicated to the Stroke &

be building relationships and creating
connectivity with hospitals, physicians
and community-based office practices throughout the
region. McBride has extensive experience and holds
a degree in kinesiology, the scientific study of human
movement and performance, from Northwest Nazarene

Here’s how the Transfer Center process works:
The referring physician calls
202.BRAIN (2724).
An experienced transfer coordinator
immediately works to conference in the
on-call cerebrovascular neurosurgeon
at Baptist Jacksonville and remains on
the line while the two physicians speak.
After the call, the transfer coordinator
handles the following:
n Coordinating patient transportation
to Baptist Jacksonville
n Activating a “Code Stroke”
at Baptist Jacksonville
n Connecting the referring physician
to an emergency physician
n Arranging for a patient bed
n Communicating with nursing
n Handling any other transfer

To prepare for Bar Code Medication administration (BCMa), patient armbands will change for all patients.
The blue patient armbands currently in use are
being replaced with white-colored armbands.
All label stock across Baptist Health will be
updated to support this change. The new
armbands are designed to improve patient safety
by using positive
patient identification
at the bedside.
The new patient
armbands will have
a series of 2D bar codes at the top that must
be scanned prior to medication administration.
These will only be present on the patient’s
armband and not on any additional labels,
to ensure proper patient identification at
the bedside, and to prevent clinicians from
scanning patient labels versus the armband.
With this change, Patient Access Services
(PAS) will be responsible for printing patient
armbands. Nursing will place a new order
in Cerner called “Armband Reprint,” along
with new PAS and Nursing workflows that
have been finalized. An armband hot
sheet will be distributed in late April.
On April 28 at approximately 10 pm, Baptist
Beaches will be the first to implement the
new armbands and all inpatients will be
re-armbanded. Nursing staff working the night
shift in all inpatient areas will participate in the
re-armbanding process. All other hospitals
will implement the new armbands on May 5.
BCMA activation occurs at Baptist Jacksonville
and Wolfson Children’s Hospital on May 19,
and at the other hospitals on June 23. These
are the dates when nursing staff will begin
scanning with handheld devices that verify the
patient and the medication at the bedside.
Important Dates
April 28 - New armbands
implemented at Baptist Beaches
May 5 - New armbands implemented
at all other hospitals
May 19 - BCMA go live at Baptist Jacksonville
and Wolfson Childrens Hospital
June 23 - BCMA go live at all other hospitals
Let’s get ready!
The new armbands are designed to improve patient safety by using positive patient identification at the bedside.

Many Baptist Health employees extend our mission of healing beyond our own
community. One of these is Freida “Ruthie” Skinner, OTD, OTR/L, DPT, lead
occupational therapist with the Baptist AgeWell Center for Senior Health.
Skinner developed many of the programs offered at AgeWell, focusing on
behavioral modification to maintain functional independence with day-to-day
living. These include memory enhancement, urinary incontinence, home safety
and fall prevention programs.
In January, she provided many of these services when she went on a mission
trip to Haiti for a week with Pastor Remy Jeanty Jr. and a team of people from
Christian Life Devotion Church in Brooklyn, New York.
“Many of the patients I treated were geriatric patients like the ones I see at
AgeWell Center. We provided medical care, including health screenings,
nursing services, occupational therapy, health education and much more. I do
carry the Baptist mission of changing health care for good with me, not just in
the hospital, but into the community and to different places in the world,”
she said.
AgeWell employee extends healing ministry to Haiti
Ruthie Skinner teaches an elderly woman, who has generalized weakness, arthritis and stiffness, exercises to help increase her strength, flexibility and coordination for day-to-day living and for fall prevention.
March 31 - April 6 is National Patient Access
Services Week. “So much of the patient
experience is shaped by first impressions,
and our dedicated Patient Access Services
staff serves in a key first-contact role,
representing Baptist with both competence and
compassion,” said John Wilbanks, executive
vice president and chief operating officer.
PAS is responsible for numerous tasks within
the revenue cycle. “The insurance complexities
they deal with are mind-boggling. What is so
impressive about PAS is that they get it right
more than 99 percent of the time,” said Philip
Boyce, senior vice president of Managed Care.
PAS employees recently elected a council
to serve as a voice for employees and
help with decision-making. Members are
Sirronda Mitchell, James Hatcher, Thomas
Genes, Keasha Jennings, Marcy Miller,
Stephanie Nettles and Cassandra Woods.
Some interesting facts about PAS in 2013 are:
n They registered
more than half a
million patients at
44 different locations.
n The Call Center
answered 316,489
phone calls and
scheduled 203,419
patients.
n All patient accounts are touched
by PAS for financial clearance.
n PAS collected more than $5.5 million
in patient revenue.
n PAS employees provided cost estimates,
arranged for interpreters, collected email
addresses for the satisfaction surveys,
offered RXpress service, and completed
84,131 tasks from clinical staff requests.

Baptist hospitals honored by international breastfeeding groups
Congratulations to the lactation consultants
at Baptist Jacksonville and Baptist Nassau for
being recognized by two international groups for
excellence in lactation care.
The hospitals received the IBCLC® Care Award
in recognition of staffing professionals who hold
the prestigious International Board Certified
Lactation Consultant® certification (IBCLC®) and
for providing a lactation program that is available
5 - 7 days a week for breastfeeding families.
The award was given by the International
Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners
(IBLCE) and the International Lactation
Consultant Association (ILCA). Baptist South
was recognized with the award last year.
Lactation consultants are available during
pregnancy to assist the mother and provide
information on how to successfully initiate
breastfeeding. After the baby is born, they help
mothers overcome breastfeeding challenges and
continue to support them as their baby grows.
Breastfeeding testimonialKim Ward, MSW,
Wolfson Children’s Hospital NICU
When I joined Wolfson Children’s
Hospital as a Social Work intern in the
NICU in early 2011, I was breastfeeding
my 11-week-old baby. My supervisor
and director had both been working
mothers and were very supportive,
giving me the flexibility I needed
to pump milk throughout the five-
month internship. Our unit lactation
consultant, Diane, always made time to
answer my questions.
Our unit had just begun providing donor milk
to our fragile premature babies, and Diane
encouraged me to contact the milk banks that
supplied our unit and become a donor mother.
Over time, I was able to donate three gallons of
milk, which was distributed nationally.
Shortly after completing my internship, I was hired
by Baptist Jacksonville. The nurse manager of the
floor where I used the lactation room was very
accommodating and made a wonderful lactation
area, complete with mood lighting and a door
sign. Thanks to these small conveniences, I was
able to pump both for my son and to donate milk
for more than a year.
I developed a heart for lactation and always made
sure to check in with new mothers on the floors
where I worked. Later, I transferred to Wolfson
Children’s Hospital and had more opportunities to
assist nursing mothers during my work. Without
the encouragement I received from my co-
workers along the way, I might not have become
the breastfeeding advocate that I am today.

Distinguished Caregiver Lata Mitchell, Quality Coordinator
Health Information Management
During the opening of Baptist Clay,
Lata Mitchell was instrumental
in developing the workflow for
scanning and training of the Patient
Access Services staff in Health
Information Management functions.
She volunteered to modify her
work schedule to be available at
Baptist Clay during the night shift so each
staff member could be trained in their
environment. Many times, she worked at
Baptist South during the day and went to
Baptist Clay at night to ensure
proper training.
Baptist South is first to provide FEES testing
Are you wondering what
Darlene Desena is doing
here? She is mixing food for
a new patient swallow test
using green food coloring.
Desena, lead speech
language pathologist at
Baptist South, provided
the first ever Fiberoptic
Endoscopic Evaluation of
Swallowing (FEES) at Baptist
Health system. This is done by inserting a
scope through a patient’s nose in order to
visualize swallowing in the back of the throat
as it happens.
To make FEES available, much had to come
together, including purchasing equipment,
training, and competencies and development
of documentation and policies. Desena has
been instrumental in ensuring that Baptist
South can provide this service at the bedside.
Several other processes help prevent
aspiration. What makes FEES different is that
it can be done bedside; it does not expose
the patient to X-rays and it does not require
additional staff, except for the nurse who
assists the speech-language pathologist. It is
not a replacement for other tests; the speech-
language pathologist is the best person to
determine which test is appropriate for
the patient.
New board memberHospital President Ron
Robinson announced
in March that Chris
Emans has joined the
Baptist South Board of

Community Hospice of Northeast Florida and
Deerwood Rotary Club. Previously, he served

and The Help Center.
