Your Regular Gift means so muchIn this issue of Care News you will see how our services help so many local people. We are only part-funded by the NHS so regular donations, large and small are vital contributions to our running costs. Just £3 per month makes a real difference. Thank you in advance.

Since taking over the reins of Chairmanship in January, I have spent time getting to know staff and volunteers and learn about the Hospice’s services and the challenges the charity faces.

My wife and I have been long term supporters of the Hospice and we are well aware of

the reputation for excellent care, but it has come as a revelation just how comprehensive and integrated are its services.

I have been hugely impressed by the skills of staff and volunteers in all

the many different departments of the Hospice covering clinical,

fundraising, trading and central support services. The

dedication, passion and sheer hard work often goes beyond the call of duty. And then I read the thank you letters and messages,

and the patient stories, and realise afresh how special Isabel Hospice is. It is a

privilege therefore to be asked to lead the Board and the organisation through what will no doubt be a challenging period.

Indeed, over the next few years, we need to address an uncomfortably low level of financial reserves, resolve the situation regarding the In Patient Unit at Howlands both during and after the redevelopment of the Howlands site and very importantly, meet the predicted rise in demand for our services, particularly the increase in desire of patients to be looked after at home. More details of how we plan to address these challenges will be provided at the Annual Meeting (see details on pages 5). So do please come along to hear more about our plans to Van Hage on 10th September.

I am looking forward to tackling these challenges and thank you, our loyal supporters for your continuing support.

Rod LeggetterChairman of Trustees

My dad, Frank O'Rourke, was a happy and sociable individual, well loved by many including his wife, two daughters and 5 grandchildren. He could not do enough for others, whether it was pulling over and helping a lady who had broken down in her car or being the life and soul at work, dad was a character.

Then in 2012 everything changed. We found out that dad had bowel cancer. It was terminal. Our world was turned upside down. How would we deal with this? Our beautiful dad, husband, granddad was going to die?

Whilst all of these questions were going on, we were lucky to

receive a visit from an Isabel Hospice nurse, who helped with all of our questions. From then on, over the two years that my dad fought his cancer, he would attend Day Service. He said he liked having a laugh again! Then came the day when dad was very ill, and I contacted Isabel Hospice who were able to admit him. When we went to see him, I was shocked and amazed at how comfortable the room was. How kind and accommodating the staff were and most importantly how comfortable and happy my dad was as his pain was being managed and he was getting round the clock care. We had a doctor come around and she was so very kind and empathetic as she delivered the news that dad was very ill. Dad started to deteriorate so it was time to bring in his beloved grandchildren who he had thrown in the air, run after, spoilt with sweets, taught them gardening. They loved him so much and it broke our hearts. But

a nurse called

Wendy sat us down and helped us explain to the children what was happening to their granddad. We made some wooden hearts and each of them wrote what they loved about granddad. Over the six days that dad was in the Hospice, he was looked after by the staff as if he was glass. I watched as they gently lifted his arms, even when he couldn't communicate anymore. I watched as they spoke to him even when he couldn't answer anymore, how they put cream on his dry skin. I watched these amazing people I never met before treat my beautiful dad the way anyone's last days should be. As we stayed with dad, they offered us meals and drinks, had a hairdresser do my step-mum's hair. These things just made us feel the immense support we had at this difficult time. On Nov 11th 2014 I was in the kitchen at the Hospice as my step-mum sat with dad who at that moment slipped away around 11pm. We called our family, and when we returned to the room to dad the lovely staff had put all those wooden hearts the grandchildren had written around dad's head. I can't thank the Hospice enough. All those special people will never know how grateful we are. They enabled my dad to die with dignity and with no pain.

Hospices across the UK are taking the BBC to task about their negative portrayal in episodes of EastEnders and Casualty.

Our Hospice has joined with other UK Hospices to campaign against what it says is the BBC’s recent portrayal of them as ‘dingy’ and ‘grotty’.

The protest on social media against the BBC's portrayal started in June when Jonathan Ellis, director of policy and advocacy at national hospice organisation Hospice UK, posted a blog on the Huffington Post about what he termed the 'shocking' portrayal by the BBC.

We also voiced our disapproval at the portrayal by posting pictures of our services, staff and grounds on social media using the hashtags '#notdingy' and '#ourbeautifulhospice'.

Nigel Furlong, Isabel Hospice Chief Executive said "Anyone who has been to our In-Patient Unit or Day Service, or has been touched by our free services, knows it is not a dingy place. It is a place full of love and light and yes, even laughter. We are disappointed by the BBC's less than positive representation of the work we, and other hospices across the UK and the world, do every day. We hope that that by posting

images of our beautiful Hospice and garden and cheerful staff we will be able to show the local – and the national community – just what an inspiring atmosphere there is at the Hospice. The word ‘hospice’ can make people frightened if they don’t know what we do, and we don’t want such popular TV programmes to compound this myth. So many of our families tell us they wish they had come to us sooner in their journey and we hope the #notdingy campaign will help dispel the myths."

Sorry BBC, you have got it wrong! Hospices are #notdingy

There are so many people that help us. Below is just a snapshot of their fundraising activity. We hope it inspires you. Thank you for your continuing support.

Could you spare a few hours a week to help us?

You will be given full support and training before taking up your role and it’s a great way to meet new people.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for three key areas of the Hospice.

• Drivers

• Receptionists at our In-Patient Unit

• In-Patient Unit Bedroom Assistants

Drivers Each week the volunteer office will check your availability and then schedule you to drive patients from their home to one of our service locations. This could be just one trip, or you may be asked to take them home again. We hold Day Services in Welwyn Garden City and in Thorley, Bishop’s Stortford. It’s a very rewarding role, where you give someone a bit of independence from their family or carer. Many drivers say they feel privileged to do the job as they get to chat as they drive and can see first-hand how much Isabel Hospice is helping.

Receptionists at the In-Patient Unit The reception role is covered by volunteers 365 days a year from 9am to 9pm. If we had to pay a member of staff to do this it could cost the Hospice around £30,000! In this role you are often the first face that families and patients see when being admitted to the In-Patient Unit. You are there to reassure and ensure that visitors are signed in and out of the building.

In-Patient Unit Bedroom AssistantThis is a varied role bringing you into contact with patients and their families on the Unit. You will serve drinks and meals and may often spend time talking, playing cards or doing puzzles with patients. As well as patients and families, you will support the nurses and clinicians and keep communal areas clean and tidy.

Could you help in one of these vital roles?

Call the Volunteer Office on 01707 382500 or email [email protected] for more information.

“I often feel with volunteering I get as much back as I give. It’s such a rewarding

thing to do. I meet new people all the time and have made many good friends”

Volunteering

Here’s how it works. 1. You put together an eBay Challenge team.

2. You nominate a ‘leader’ to manage your team and keep track of the sales.

3. Each member of your eBay Challenge team uses £5 of their own money to buy a pre-loved item from an Isabel Hospice charity shop (we have shops in Cheshunt, Bishop’s Stortford, Hatfield, Waltham Cross, Waltham Abbey, two in Hoddesdon, the Hatfield galleria, Sawbridgeworth, two in Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, Ware, Buntingford and Cuffley - see our website for full address details).

4. Each member lists their item on eBay and nominates Isabel Hospice to receive 100% of the money raised from the sale. (Find the link to our eBay shop at www.isabelhospice.org.uk)

5. The team member that sells their item for the most money has won!

6. Contact the Isabel Hospice Fundraising Team with the details of your team challenge and you will be sent your eBay Challenge trophy (don’t get too excited it won’t be the size of the FA Cup!)

7. Display the trophy with pride!

We are launching an eBay Challenge for groups of friends, family or work colleagues.

Buy a pre-loved item for £5 and see who can sell it for the most amount on eBay!

on our weekly Lottery!

Unseen, but vital to the running of our Hospice are the switchboard operators. Their calm, professional, knowledgeable tones greet every caller ensuring that their query is directed to the right department.

These calls are often from distressed relatives or patients and the way each one is treated with individual professionalism is a credit to the team. The phone is often very busy, but you would never know that as a caller as time is taken with each person to help as best they can. In addition to taking calls, the team also deal with NHS emails and faxes as well as monitor the daily movements of between 20-30 staff for lone worker safety. Then in their spare time (!) they deal with the post, stationery and visitor queries. What a team!

In one week, on average the Switchboard team deal with:350 phone calls (many of which require a follow up message to a nurse)60 faxes60 NHS emails 80 general enquiry emailsMonitoring 20-30 staff whereabouts for lone worker safety

Make a Will Week 2015 Another successful Make a Will Week has been completed. We were thrilled to receive a total of over £23,400 from people who chose to make their Wills during the week of 9 – 13 March with one of our participating solicitors. This very generous group of legal eagles

give their time for free, asking their clients to make a donation to the Hospice in lieu of charging a fee. We are hugely grateful to them for supporting the Hospice in

this way.

If you missed your chance to make a Will or to update your existing Will, preparations are already under way for 7 – 11

March, Make a Will Week 2016. If you have had any major changes in your life recently – a birth, death, marriage, divorce or other significant event – you should make or change your Will. A Will makes it much easier for your surviving partner or family to sort things out after you die, knowing they are carrying out your final wishes.

Corporate Care News

We would like to thank all our fantastic corporate supporters, past and present, who are continuously raising funds. They constantly come up with new and imaginative ideas. There are so many businesses that help the Hospice throughout the year and we are so grateful.

Here’s a few examples on fundraising events that have taken place this year so far…

Halifax - Welwyn Garden City The team held a “Sexy Cycling Day” where they had an exercise bike that was donated to them for the day by the local gym in The Howard Centre. They dressed up in crazy gym gear and customers made donations in the branch. Over the Easter weekend, they also raised money by holding a cake bake sale, a raffle, guess the names of the Easter duck and teddy bear. They made popcorn for the children and held a kids colouring competition.

Wilkins KennedyWilkins Kennedy took part in two tough events. The Warrior Adrenaline Race (W.A.R) saw the team tackle a 5k race through an obstacle course, subjecting themselves to mud, sweat and tears before challenging themselves further with the Nuclear Rush Race. The second, more harsh than the first, was a gruelling super-muddy, man-made 12k race around an obstacle course!! A great team bonding event!

Why fundraise? As well as fulfilling your Corporate Social Responsibility, it creates a feeling of good morale amongst staff, it raises the profile of the company through positive media coverage and what’s more … it’s fun!

"Each of us have personal experience of the care given by the Hospice. We enjoy helping patients, families and Hospice staff. It’s a very rewarding role where we work well together as a team and support each other. The job often involves talking to people in distress and hearing sensitive information. We have to ensure we deal with each query empathetically and professionally."

Too many people are only aware of hospices caring for people at the very end of life, but in fact a lot of the work done by a Hospice team is aimed at ensuring people live as well as possible with a life limiting disease.

Paula Bavetta, our Therapy Team Leader, said

“When you are first diagnosed with a life-limiting illness you may not be able to look beyond that diagnosis to see the life you have to come.

Through supportive care, our multi-disciplinary teams of therapy, family support and day services aim to enable you to live purposeful, actively and as well as possible by helping you to manage and cope with the challenges associated with living with your illness. Supporting you through the ups and downs and helping achieve your goals, whatever they are! Together we can maximise your quality of life. We offer “Living Well” and “Coping Well” sessions and courses to teach and help you with the physical and emotional challenges you face, as well as complementary therapies to counteract some of the less pleasant consequences of your illness. We can also support you in our gym to exercise within your own capabilities. We help you continue to live as well as you can.”

Annual Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving

As we come together as a hospice community in different places in our catchment area each year, we hope to offer a service that is inclusive and meaningful for everyone, whether you have a faith or not.

Our theme for this year will be “the Circle of Life”. There will be a separate activity based around our theme for children and young people to join in during the service, facilitated by our children’s workers.

Please come and join us in October!

We hope to see you there -

Memory TreeIn this issue of Care News you will find enclosed a leaflet about our new Memory Tree. Each leaf on the tree can be dedicated to a loved one in a gold, silver or bronze colour. The tree is at our In-Patient Unit (your loved one does not have to have been admitted to IPU to have a leaf dedication) and is fully lit, making it a beautiful sight displaying personal tributes to loved ones. A leaf dedication can be secured with a regular monthly donation or a yearly one. For more details, please see the leaflet enclosed.

Did you know we have a Lasting Memories Tribute website? It is a place to gather special memories, light virtual candles, post videos and photos and keep all your family and friends up to date with any fundraising you may be doing for the Hospice.
