Dear Parents & Caregivers
As we head into Easter, we are looking forward to the
long weekend – however, we have much to share with
what’s happening at HPPS in coming weeks.
Our Year 6 students from 6B and 6W are at
Wooglemai as I type the newsletter. Mr King went out
to camp this morning and reports that students are
having a wonderful time.
Gala Day trials continue this week and our four Year
6 leaders are heading to Parliament House with Mr
Beeby on Friday. Year 4 are heading to Minnamurra
next week, and we are all looking forward to the
school cross country on April 6th.
Our class photos are next Wednesday 28th. We ask
that our students be in full school uniform on the day.
On April 3rd, 2018 we are providing parents the
opportunity to come into school at 6:30pm to look at
aspects of our school plan. Parents and carers may
have seen the Poster that has “2020 Vision” in its title
in this newsletter and last fortnights, as well as
posters displayed around the school. It will provide
parents with the opportunity to see what our plans
are, as well as provide feedback before they are
finalised. Mrs Essex has more information later in the
newsletter.
Please also make sure you read information Mr King
has provided later in the newsletter regarding a
number of issues.
I look forward to seeing parents and carers next
Thursday while we enjoy the Easter Hat Parade.
Best regards
Kelly Paton

Our school parliament have had a busy couple of weeks preparing for the year ahead. On Wednesday the 7th of March, our parliament members attended the GRIP leadership conference at Sydney Olympic Park. It was a fantastic opportunity for our leaders to gain insightful knowledge and understanding of some effective leadership strategies, and how to use them immediately in their leadership role. The students were engaged during the presentations and participated with great enthusiasm.
At our recent Care, Believe, Succeed assembly our student leaders were officially inducted into the school parliament by our Principle Ms Paton. It was great to see so many of our parents and carers in attendance to support our leadership group.
Well done to all the students who represented Harrington Park PS at the Regional Swimming carnival last week. Congratulations to our junior girls relay team; Zoe W, Zoe H, Isabella H and Charlize W, and our senior girls relay team; Isabella T, Maddison L, Alexis W, and Charlize W. Both teams will now represent our school at the State Carnival. Special congratulations to Isabella H, who will be representing Harrington Park PS at State in all events. Isabella was also awarded the junior girls age champion at the regional carnival. Good luck girls! Mrs Tidyman & Ms Byrne Carnival Organisers
Dropping Off and Picking Up Children
Due to the large number of parents dropping off and picking up children at Harrington Park PS, the roads at times become quite congested. We often have extensive delays in the peak afternoon period. It is important to remember that the safety of all children at our school is paramount, even if it means that you are delayed in your afternoon travel plans.
The area at the front gate is a kiss and ride (or drop) area. This zone is designed to minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. This area operates under the same conditions as No Parking zones. This means that you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You are required to remain in or within 3 metres of your vehicle. Please do not attempt to pick up your children at the front of the school in the No Stopping zone or near the pedestrian crossing. If your child hasn’t arrived within two minutes you are required to vacate the zone and drive around again before entering the zone.
It is important to remember that it is also extremely unsafe to park in the roundabout or at the side gate of the school when dropping off or picking up your children. Please ensure that you do not take part in this practice.

Attendance
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
All student absences must be explained by parents/carers on the day your child returns to school. At Harrington Park PS you can provide these explanations in the following ways:
Skoolbag App – you can do this by going to the Skoolbag App and enter the dates and reason why your child was absent.
Written – you can provide a brief signed written explanation to your child’s class teacher stating the date of absence and the reason for the absence. We have included in this newsletter some slips, which can be cut off, filled in and returned.
Verbal – you can ring the school and talk to our office staff explaining your child’s absence or you can talk to your child’s class teacher.
We currently have a large number of students who habitually arrive late to school without any justification. Late arrivals need to be explained by parents, as we cannot accept explanations from students.
Please ensure your child is at school prior to our starting time of 9:00am.

Our P and C have elected not to continue to co-ordinate our school canteen. We have actively
sought out a new canteen operator through the tender processes as outlined by the Department
of Education guidelines and we anticipate the new operator commencing at the beginning of
Term 2. Due to this change over, there may be limited supply of some food items as Jo and
Lisa run their stock orders down over the next few weeks. We ask all students and parents to
be flexible and understanding when placing orders for lunch and buying recess. We would like
to take this opportunity to thank both Jo and Lisa for the wonderful job they have done over a
long period of time to run our school canteen and providing the wonderful selection of food and
the service that they have given to our school community. We wish them both well in their
future endeavours.

We are delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate
in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey
measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus
of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.
More information about the survey is available at http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au
The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on
what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers
interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From
Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do
things at our school.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically
take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26th March
and 13th April. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Please see the note that was sent home
previously.

Book Fair is coming to
Harrington Park
The Book Fair is coming to Harrington Park again in 2018. It is a wonderful opportunity for
children to purchase a new book to enjoy!
The Book Fair will be open in the library for the children to view the books from Thursday
15th March to Tuesday 20th March 2018 with their class during library.
The Fair will then be open from Wednesday 21st March until Tuesday 27th March 2018 for
children to purchase books, both during their library lesson and at select times before and
after school. Parents are also invited to visit the Fair before and after school to have a look
and purchase books.
The purchasing days and times will be advertised shortly on posters around the school once
they have been confirmed. Please keep an eye out.
Every child who purchases a book from the Fair will be given a raffle ticket which gives them
the chance to win a lucky door prize. There will be six lucky winners who will have a chance to
choose a free book, up to a set value at the end of the Fair.
Any enquires can be made to Mrs Bligh in the library.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence On Friday 16th March, students were involved in the National Day of Action (NDA) with the aim to raise awareness about bullying in schools and create behavioural change. Students were encouraged to stand united against bullying and violence in schools and beyond. The theme for this year was “imagine a world free from bullying”.
The NDA is a positive day that provides a focus on the message – “Bullying, No Way!” Harrington Park Public School continues to implement whole school, class and individual programs and strategies to address issues of bullying throughout the year. Bullying is defined as “an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm”. Please contact your child’s class teacher as
the first point of call. We are always here to listen and help. Please also see the tips for parents included in this newsletter. Kind regards, Rachel Essex
Coles Sports for Schools This year Harrington Park Public Schools is participating in the Coles Sports for Schools
Program. For every $10 spent at Coles customers will receive one voucher. Families are encouraged to drop these vouchers into our collection bin, which is in the
front office.
Please do this before and after school, not during class time. Each voucher will go towards our school earning new sports equipment.
