Reflection on the Olympics So, the Olympics have started. I am a bit of a tragic when it comes to the games. I will watch almost anything. I love the excitement and energy of it all. I also love the personal stories of courage and determination that come out of this amazing event. There can be great value in watching the Olympics with your children. Young people can see athletes who have trained, worked hard, and set goals. They also see athletes working together for their team—regardless of what sport they compete in. The Olympics showcase some of life’s most important lessons: how to work hard, how to be a good sport, how to play fair, and how to work as a team. These are lessons that can have value for students in the classroom, and also for life beyond school. Here are just a few things we could all learn from those who have reached, what many would say, is the pinnacle of their particular field: Set yourself specific goals. Focus on what you want to achieve and limit other distractions. Having goals gives you a purpose. Purpose inspires passion. Our passion is often what separates those who are highly successful from those who just can't quite get there. Be consistent – don’t flip-flop, procrastinate or take days off because you feel like it. Make every moment count. Don’t be afraid to try, even if it doesn’t come naturally. Be persistent. Persevere no matter how tough things get. Never give up. Be resilient. Bounce back when things go wrong. Don’t let a big goal overwhelm you. Focus on the small steps you need to get to where you want to be. Never stop trying to improve. Once you reach a goal, it’s time to set another. Take care of yourself. Try to find some ‘teachable moments’ that you and your children can discuss as you watch and enjoy the games in the coming days. Don’t miss the chance to draw out some of these great life lessons. Enrolment Interviews We are now commencing our enrolment interviews for 2017. If you have a child you would like to enrol, please contact Alice at the College Office to make an appointment. If you know someone who does not currently have children at Saint Mary’s who is interested in joining our community, please invite them to get in touch with us. Indigenous Advisory Group Reminder I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that we are in the process of forming an Indigenous Advisory Group at Saint Mary’s. The purpose of this group will be to provide an avenue for the parents and carers of our Indigenous students to meet to discuss ways that we might be able to enhance the educational opportunities for these young people. The group will meet once per term. The first meeting will be held at 5:00pm on Monday, 15th August at Saint Peter Claver Church, Lower Broadway Street Cherbourg. If you would like more information, please contact either myself, Niketa Law, Karen Bond or Amanda Erwin at the College. Here are just a few things we could all learn from those who have reached, what many would say, is the pinnacle of their particular field:

Set yourself specific goals.

Focus on the small steps you need to get to

where you want to be.

What a lovely break in the middle of Term 3 to have a long weekend as a result of the Ekka Show Day holiday. I was fortunate to go to the Ekka on Friday with the Saint Mary’s Catholic College Whip Cracking team, as they performed their routines and were judged on their performances and accuracy. Other schools were there competing as were individuals from Victoria and outback Queensland. All the lunchtimes that Mrs. Arrell and the children give up to practice over the weeks have not been in vain. It was wonderful to see the hard work pay off. Our students did our school proud with their efforts and their immaculate uniforms and professional performances. Thank you Mrs. Arrell, Darcy Williamson and Jack Maudsley from the primary classes.

I’d like to welcome to Saint Mary’s Catholic College Miss Kylie Ledger, who is working in Year 6A for the rest of this term, while Mrs. Johnston is away on Long Service Leave. I would also like to welcome Mr. Gary Allan who is working with Ms Kennedy in supporting students across P-12. Gary is here for this term and Term 4. Kind regards Ms Pam Radcliffe Head of Primary

Term 3 Fees Overdue Term 3 Fees were due for payment last Friday, 5th August for families without a formal payment arrangement in place. If you have any concerns regarding your account including instalment payments, please contact Finance Secretary, Briony Hoare in the office. While the College will accept payments by instalments, we do need to know the amount and timing of these payments and it’s preferred that these instalments be done via Direct Debit or BPay. Kind regards Miss Kym Schultz Business Manager

Yesterday some of our students went to St Stephen’s Cathedral in Brisbane to sing in a combined children’s choir for the solemnity of Saint Mary Mackillop. It was a wonderful event to be a part of. There was a witness of vocations at this MASS with many priests concelebrating the mass with Archbishop Mark Coleridge and the Josephite sisters also attending to celebrate their communities Feast day. The Archbishop spoke of St Mary Mackillop as one who suffered “She suffered in this city. She suffered in all kinds of ways throughout this land, and yet her suffering was the cross of Christ”, He also spoke of her as one who was a pilgrim who drew thousands on her journey. It is amazing that these students gave their time and best to be participants in this very important day in the Archdiocese of Brisbane and also being pilgrims like St Mary Mackillop journeying not only to the Cathedral yesterday but toward something incredible in each of their lives. Thanks to all who attended and to Jane Iszlaub who organised and rehearsed with the students and Martin Perrett as well. Youth Group starts next Tuesday 16th after school at St Mary’s Church. Please see me or Mr Perrett for permission forms. NET TEAM – The National Evangelisation team is coming Friday 2nd September at 6pm. Students are invited to come to St Mary’s Church for a BBQ, music and fun. God Bless, Miss Megan Schick

Premiers Reading Challenge Students are reminded to keep recording the books they have read into the Premiers Reading Challenge forms. This challenge ends on 26th August so there is plenty of time to meet the challenge. Please note that some class teachers have been keeping this form at school to help students complete the challenge.

Book Week 2016 Please disregard previous dates for Book Week. In Week 7 this term (22nd -26th August), we will once again celebrate Book Week! The theme is “Australia Story Country.” Australia IS a Story Country. Our stories come from all over: from our own indigenous people, from migrants and refugees who have come to live here, from books, movies and orally transmitted stories. Book Week this year is a time to encourage children to immerse themselves in a range of stories, to read them, listen to them, watch them, think about them, and go on to share them with others! We will have a Book Week Assembly (Wednesday 24th August at 9am) where students can come dressed in green and gold/yellow (Australian Olympics Team colours). They will need to bring a book to the parade to share with their buddies afterwards. We will also have a Campfire Stories night (Monday 22nd August) at 6.30pm – 7.30pm. In previous years, this has been a wonderful night for young and old in their pyjamas, onesies or night gowns! This year, we will continue this tradition. All are welcome! During this week, there will also be competitions, displays, guest reading and many other exciting activities. Yours in reading Mrs Melanie Burr Teacher Librarian

Congratulations to the 10-12 year old students who braved the cold and attended the South Burnett Athletics Carnival last Wednesday. Unfortunately Tuesday’s 6-9 year olds carnival had to be postponed but did take place yesterday.

While we await the complete results of the carnivals we can announce that Luke Beutel tied with a fellow athlete from Kingaroy State High to take out the 12 Years age champion on the day. Congratulations to Luke for his achievement and also his sportsmanship on the day. Those children eligible to go on to Wide Bay will be notified shortly. A reminder that information will be coming out in the following weeks regarding the South Burnett Secondary Carnival being held at Nanango State High on the 25th and 26th August. Warm Regards, Mr Scott Collier and Miss Ellen Inwood Prep to Year 6 and Year 7 to Year 12 Sports Coordinator

Approaching Events: Saturday, 13th August - Qld Catholic Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) - College Orchestra (Years 6 – 12) and selected

Senior Primary Choir students (Years 4-6) Friday, 26th August - SBMCS “Little Shop of Horrors” Opening Night (Selected students performing.)

Wondai Art Gallery – Opening Night On Friday evening, Saint Mary’s Senior Music students provided the entertainment at the South Burnett High School Art Competition. Led by Ben Nicholson, the students performed a diverse program of music and were wonderful representatives of our College and our growing Music Program. Congratulations to the Art students who demonstrated such advanced skill in their works, and our Art teachers, Ms Martoo-Langford and Ms Woodruff for their dedication to their students. St Stephen’s Cathedral Choir Excursion On Monday, selected Music students from Years 9 – 11 participated in the Mass celebrating the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop at the Cathedral of St Stephen in Brisbane. Our students have spent several weeks in preparation for this important Catholic Education event, including a trip to St Lawrence’s College to rehearse with their Head of Music, Mr Anthony Young. The combined forces of the Brass Fanfare ensemble, Chapel Rock Band, Cathedral pipe organ and 200 singers certainly raised the roof in celebration of our Aussie Saint, and it was wonderful to see some of our families travel to Brisbane to witness this unique event. A huge thanks to Mr Perrett and Miss Schick, our College APRE and Campus Minister, for their participation in this activity as well. QCMF – Choir and Orchestra The seven members of the College Chamber Orchestra and the selected members of the Senior Primary Choir will be travelling to Villanova College in Brisbane on Saturday 13 August to compete in the Queensland Catholic Music Festival. This is sure to be an exciting journey for our young musicians, as it is the first time our College has stepped out onto the QCMF stage to perform with other choirs and orchestras from around the state. These can be dropped into the Tuckshop on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or to the College Office. Ordering and Payment We now have two options for ordering, online and the paper bag system. For Prep to Year 5 students it is recommended that you use either of these systems. Online Ordering System QKR (Quicker): Your child’s online order will be sent to the tuckshop, where it will be printed out. The orders are filled and placed in the class baskets. Their baskets are collected at morning tea and lunch. You are not required to send in a paper bag once you have ordered online. Paper Bag System: Your child's order will be placed in the tuckshop baskets in their classroom in the mornings. The baskets are delivered to the tuckshop and orders are filled. Their baskets are collected at morning tea and lunch. Please do not use sticky tape or staples when using paper bags for ordering. It makes it difficult to get the bags undone without tearing. Plastic bags are not suitable for ordering, it is very difficult to place your child's order inside them. Bags can be purchased from the tuckshop for .05c each. Year 6 to Year 12 students are more than welcome to use either system. If using the paper bag system, students place their bag orders at the tuckshop before school. Do you know……. That we sell Sandwiches! Our Sandwiches are made fresh to order, with your choice of fillings. They include ham, chicken, cheese or vegemite or salad. This is available to order for second break only. Have a great week. Mrs Michelle Davis Tuckshop Convenor

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those who helped cater and serve at the Equestrian Event last Thursday. A special mention to Kelly Crane for organising everyone, Damo for cooking the bacon and egg muffins, Shannon for rounding up the groups and Lee for spending the day serving the hungry masses! I hope I haven't left anyone out! Please forgive me if I have. By all accounts the day was a great success yet again. We are still looking for a very special person who can take on the running of the Father's Day stall. We will run you through all that is required. It is quite easy! If you can help please ring me on the below number. In September, the Year 12 students are holding a Trivia night. We are looking for people who can spend a little time in the canteen serving drinks. Once again if you can help, could you ring the number below. God Bless, Mrs Susan Robertson P&F President 0419 766 141 or [email protected]

Thank you! Mother Teresa once said, “It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” Year 6 would like to say thank you to all the merciful people who donated food and clothing for ‘the least of our brothers and sisters’. There was a lot of love in our giving. Here are some excerpts from the students’ Reflection Diaries. I feel very proud that we are helping with the corporal works of mercy. Teresa I also felt pretty happy when I finished the speech because I was doing something right for the homeless. Eden When I collected the box from prep I was really surprised when I saw how much stuff they brought in! Bella On assembly, when we walked down the aisle, I felt proud knowing that we had done the right thing and help lives all over Australia. I hope that we inspired kids from P-5 to do the right thing and help others. Ally When I saw how much the classes had donated it felt so good to know our hard work had paid off. We collected six boxes in total so that was a good effort. In the boxes there were a lot of toys so there will be a lot of happy children soon. There was also quite a lot of stuff for the RSPCA. After this assignment was done I knew I was lucky. Sam Last Friday at assembly we collected all the donations that the other grades had given. It made me felt good to know that I helped all poor and the homeless. We donated 6 boxes of food, toys, clothes, blankets. I hope that everything people donated comes in use.

All the donated items have been packed up and are being distributed to these charitable organisations in Kingaroy: St Vincent De Paul, Red Cross, The Salvation Army, and the RSPCA. Thank you to Miss Schick for helping to deliver the donations to the various local charities.
