KEY ATTRIBUTESCANADA’S LARGEST HYDROCARBON PROCESSING REGION• Petrochemical production (Ethylene, Styrene, Fertilizers,
Propylene, Iso-Octane, Polyethylene, MEG, and more)• Fractionation capacity (485 Mbpd)• Petroleum refining (450-500 Mbpd capacity
expanding to 600 Mbpd)• Bitumen upgrading (255 Mbpd)• Ready access to price advantaged hydrocarbon and
petrochemical feedstock
MAJOR MANUFACTURING CENTRE• Established centre for supply, service, and
manufacturing for Canada’s oil and gas sector• Oil and gas logistics and processing• Approximately $1.5 billion in annual expenditures
(excluding feedstocks)
$40 BILLION IN CURRENT CAPITAL INVESTMENT AND BILLIONS MORE IN FUTURE POTENTIAL
LOGISTICS & MARKET CONNECTIONS• Centre for pipeline terminals for natural gas,
oil, bitumen, diluent, and refined products• Salt formations underlie the region allowing
for natural gas and NGL storage• Home to both Canadian National and Canadian
Pacific railroads• Direct access to major North American ports
provides connections to world markets
LOCAL EXPERTISE• Region is home to more than 1.3 million people • Educated and skilled labour, technical, and
professional expertise
GOVERNMENT SUPPORTED• Stable, democratic, and business friendly political system• Carbon capture and storage projects backed by a
$2 billion Government of Alberta program• Past government incentive programs aimed at
growth in downstream sector• Favourable tax structure (low corporate tax)
MUNICIPAL PARTNERSIncorporated in 1998, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association is guided by a non-profit association of municipalities dedicated to promoting and planning for responsible energy development within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Our funding partners include:
Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is one of the World’s most attractive locations for chemical, petrochemical, and hydrocarbon processing. It is Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region with operating investments of $40 billion. Approximately $30 billion in additional investment is targeted by 2030.
The region’s 40+ companies, several being world scale, provide fuels, fertilizers, power, petrochemicals, and more, to provincial and global consumers.
Refining opportunities in Alberta are not limited to oil, gas, and petrochemicals. Alberta also has an emerging industrial biochemical sector using biomass as an alternative feedstock to petrochemicals in the production of energy products and industrial chemicals.
Industrial development is strongly supported by municipal and provincial governments. Alberta has a democratic and business friendly political system in addition to a favourable tax structure.

CAPITAL COSTS
2017 ADVISIAN CAPITAL COST STUDY SHOWS ALBERTA’S
INDUSTRIAL HEARTLAND COSTS ARE ON PAR WITH U.S. GULF COAST
“THE VALUE PROVIDED TO OUR BUSINESS, THROUGH THE BOARD’S VISION AND LEADERSHIP, IS SIGNIFICANT.”
The AIHA’s support for our current operations and guidance on future projects is fundamental to our company’s success, which in turn, provides benefits and opportunities back to the region.
STU TAYLOR, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, MARKETING AND NEW VENTURES – PEMBINA PIPELINE CORPORATION
“ALBERTA IS AN IDEAL LOCATION TO CONSTRUCT A WORLD-SCALE PROPANE BASED PETROCHEMICAL OPERATION.”
Driven by attractive feedstock and utility costs, the Heartland Complex is expected to be one of the lowest cost polypropylene producers in North America.
CHRISTIAN BAYLE, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER – INTER PIPELINE
“WHEN OUR REGION IS APPLAUDED BY SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST DISTINGUISHED INDUSTRY LEADERS AND GOVERNMENT DECISION MAKERS, IT’S A SIGN THAT THINGS ARE GOING RIGHT.”
Global competition for investment is fierce, and Alberta is up against mighty opponents. Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association wisely took a team approach to attracting investment 20 years ago, resulting in some epic wins over the last two decades. The Sturgeon Refinery is one of many projects in the Heartland region that has seen direct benefit from your efforts.
KERRY MARGETTS, PRESIDENT, NORTH WEST REDWATER PARTNERSHIP
“IN RECENT YEARS, KEYERA
HAS SPEARHEADED MANY ESSENTIAL
ALBERTA INDUSTRIAL HEARTLAND PROJECTS.”
These include the Fort Saskatchewan Condensate System, the Norlite Pipeline (JV
with Enbridge), South Grand Rapids Pipeline (JV with TransCanada and Brion), and Condensate
connections with Access Pipeline, Northwest Redwater, and Pembina CDH. It has been important to have an engaged network of
professionals with a shared interest in the promotion and development of the area.
JARROD BEZTILNY, VICE PRESIDENT, OPERATIONS LIQUIDS BUSINESS UNIT– KEYERA
