Context of the School

Ardrossan Academy is a comprehensive secondary school situated in the town of Ardrossan. Founded in 1882, the school serves the towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and West Kilbride. The school roll is approximately 860 pupils. There are 98 staff, incorporating approximately 65 teaching staff. 54.6 % of young people live within the top 20% of the most deprived areas (SIMD deciles 1&2). There are currently 44 young people with LAC status.

We provide a Broad General Education from S1-S3; and last session we implemented a new structure for the S3 curriculum. Following evaluation activities with pupils, staff and parents it was decided that pupils will study in each curricular area and will then have the choice of two additional subjects. This will allow for the study of two/three sciences, social subjects or two languages. A 50% increase in time for most subjects in S3 has allowed staff to increase content and skills covered in S3 which we are hopeful will see an increase in attainment in session 2019-20. All pupils will be better supported to achieve N4 and N5 level qualifications at end of S4. YPI is a key feature of our S3 Personal and Social Development programme. Wider achievement is also promoted through Wellbeing.

Senior Phase learners follow a curriculum encompassing National Qualifications from level 3 to Advanced Higher. Vocational options include Early Education & Childcare, National progression awards in Web Design and Computer Games Development and Travel and Tourism. Last year we received funding from Princes Trust/DYW Ayrshire for the creation of a Nail Bar, Bike Maintenance course and a Barista course. This has really improved our vocational offer in the senior phase. Learners in S4/S5/S6 study six, five and four National Qualifications respectively. Opportunities for achievement in Steps to Work, Volunteering and Leadership are made available to appropriate cohorts of pupils, widening their skill set and promoting Skills for Life, Learning & Work. Local consortium arrangements offer opportunities for pupils to pursue bespoke pathways incorporating NPAs and Foundation Apprenticeships. Departments have also introduced some new courses such as Applications of Maths and NPA Science and Technology.

Primary transition work is robust and ensures learners are well prepared for their S1 experience. Many departments are involved with transition work in the primary schools. Enhanced transition work supports children who may find the move from primary to secondary more challenging. Our induction days take a thematic approach and were recently highlighted as an area of good practice to be shared with Education Scotland. Recent examples of successful work within our cluster have been STEM visits to Winton and West Kilbride Primary, a next generation music concert which involves our Junior Choir and pupils from all 4 cluster primaries working together, whole cluster moderation events, an IT working group to ensure true progression from early level to 4 th level for all pupils and a science club to engage youngsters and their parents.

Nurture is a strong feature of the school. We have a targeted programme of Nurture for S1-S3 pupils who may exhibit signs of attachment disorder. All teaching staff have been trained in Nurture principles and practice. Ardrossan Academy is the site for North Ayrshire’s Astra Base which supports learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ensuring specific young people are supported to maintain mainstream education.

Rigorous INSIGHT analysis reveals that we have an attainment gap between our most and least disadvantaged pupils, our boys who chose to leave before the end of S6 and we will work to make improvements in this area. Lesson observations and self-evaluation activities continue to reveal that

we still need to ensure consistency in learning and teaching across the school so we will continue to focus on this.

Our school vision is to continue to improve performance in a nurturing environment. Stakeholders are consulted regularly on what we can do to realise this vision. The core values of the school are Ambition, Respect and Excellence which are reinforced with young people and staff on a regular basis. The school motto is Ad Astra (To the Stars); working together, we are committed to raising the bar for all our young people and families to help them realise their life potential.

In 2018 – 19 pupils from Ardrossan Academy excelled in a huge variety of sports and we are very proud of their vast and varied achievements. The booklet Ardrossan Acheives which is available on our website provides details of our pupils achievements.

Our pupils continue to shine in the creative arts and have achieved in numerous ways across the school year. Young Musician and Young singer events were a particular highlight as welll as the increasingly popular Live@Lunch open mic event which takes place on a monthly basis.

All departments are engaged in providing opportunities to develop the young workforce including the well developed skills academy.

At Ardrossan Academy we have a shared commitment to charity work which is led by the charities committee, with input from all pupils as to which charities we choose to support on a yearly basis. Last year we donated over £7000 to charities far and wide and 846 items were donated to North Ayrshire Foodbank along with 100 selection boxes, 32 Easter Eggs and 20 Christmas Gifts. Pupils also contributed to their local community by volunteering in local schools, shops, early years centres and care homes as well as litter picks in the vicinity of the school.

Ardrossan Academy is a Rights Respecting School; we are currently working towards Silver status. We have our LGBT charter mark and our Eco School Award.

How Succesful have we been in improving our school?

School Leadership

All teachers within Ardrossan Academy are given opportunities to lead in areas that link their skills and interests and our school improvement priorities. Staff are given opportunities to review and evaluate the work of the school and contribute to the school improvement plan. This encourages collaboration and ensures that everyone is involved in taking the school forward.

We held a very successful middle leaders event where all staff at PT level took part in a residential event to examine our roles as middle leaders, how we can enhance our collegiality and support one another as best we can and how to continue to improve the culture within our school. This was a highly successful event and we have been able to develop a leadership action plan and have already undertaken several changes to the way we are working together. Staff have been encouraged to develop their leadership roles.

Young people play an active role in the leadership of Ardrossan Academy. Student leaders, house captains and prefects all work hard for the school undertaking a variety of roles in S6. Pupils have the opportunity to be My WOW ambassadors, mental health ambassadors, music ambassadors, science subject leaders as well as a variety of other roles across the school. Pupils have been on trips to Arran, Cumbrae and Loch Eil last session to improve their leadership capacity and to lead change across the school when they return. Duke of Edinbrugh continues to be a huge part of our school with pupils in engaged in activities at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

Under the leadership of the SLT we have continued to develop the curriculum to ensure we have progressive learner pathways for all pupils that embrace the widest range of subjects that we can offer. Our curriculum rationale has been updated and is available on the school website. With the changes to the structure of the S3 curriculum we have been able to develop a wder range of skills in the BGE to better prepare our pupils for the senior phase.

Our S1 phoenix group has been developed to allow us to use our PEF money to target pupils in improving their literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing. More information is available on our PEF impact statement.

Teacher Professionalism

This session we have appointed two PTs Raising Attainment who have started “Learning Lunches” for all staff to attend. This gives staff the opportunity to discuss learning and teaching strategies and compare and contrast what works for them. This has helped to develop a culture of shared teacher efficacy. The PTs Raising attainment also organised a highly succesful in-service day to highlight and showcase good practice amongst staff. The feedback from staff has been excellent.

A significant number of staff in school have taken on roles with the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). Staff in school undertake responsibilities such as markers, team leaders, visitng examiners and verifiers. This expertise has had a very positive impact on Ardrossan Academy and has deepened our understanding of the National Qualification Framework.

A large number of our teachers are undertaking professional learning to enhance their leadership skills. This session several teachers are undertaking Masters Level learning in Sustainability, Educational Leadership and Inclusive education, three have attended Columba 1400 to enhance their understanding of leadership; several other staff are engaging with Education Scotland and SCEL to look at Middle Leadership and Teacher Enquiry. Staff have

also taken part in training offered by North Ayrshire council with the PLA, coaching and mentoring and middle leadership development. Risk assessment, IOSH and SSERC courses have also had an impact on staff development this session.

Moderation and teacher judgement has been a significant focus across the whole Ardrossan cluster with several events having taken place to allow primary and secondary colleagues to work together to continue to develop their shared understanding of what achievement of a level looks like. Staff have also worked extensively within subject areas to develop their moderation and assessment strategies.

Several departments have been working on differentiating materials more effectively to better meet the needs of all learners. Lesson starters, materials, success criteria and plenary discussions have all been differentiated and staff have had the opportunity to discuss this at learning lunches.

We have an extensive calendar of self-evaluation activities that staff take part in throughout the year. We are developing our use of “You Said: We Did” posters to feedback to stakeholder groups about changes that have taken place. Staff are engaged in evaluating progress with their departments and across the school and in the last two sessions have had a direct input into the SIP by taking part in activities to support them in engaging with evidence gathered throughout the year in the May inservice day.

Parental Engagement

Our Family Learning Worker and staff from across the school sought out innovative and creative ways to increase parental engagement last session. They have organised PIP events to let Parents know what to expect in S1 as well as more light hearted events such as quizzes and bingo. The also worked with the Pastoral Team at the S1 “Come Dine and Learn with me” events and with the Eco School Committee in the setting up of the “Swap Shop” where clothes can be re-used and recycled for the benefit of other members of the school community.

We are constantly striving to ensure as many parents as possible can access parents’ evenings and are comfortable and supported in doing so. Last session we introduced an electronic booking system which has increased uptake at parents’ evenings and has allowed the Pastoral Staff to contact parents who haven’t signed up to support attendance.

We like to share our successes with parents as much as possible and invite them in wherever possible. The Ad Astra awards ceremonies were very well attended as were prizegiving and music events. The gold stars we introduced this session to recognise pupils for showing the school values have been an excellent way to show parents that their young people are achieving in school.

We have developed “You Said, we did” posters to feedback to parents about what we have done in response to feedback given at parents’ evenings, surveys and questionnaires. This has been well received.

We make use of Show my Homework to engage parents in supporting learning at home and effective use is made across the school of other on line platforms for pupils to access their work at home.

We make good use of letters, texts, emails, twitter, the school website and newsletters to communicate with parents.

We have workshops with parents for UCAS (University and College admissions service), careers events and senior phase events to ensure

Page 6: Ardrossan Academy · Web viewArdrossan Academy is a comprehensive secondary school situated in the town of Ardrossan. Founded in 1882, the school serves the towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats

We had a thematic inspection in March 2019 from Education Scotland to look at how well we empower parents and pupils within our Establishment. We received very good feedback from this visit.

Assessment of Childrens’ Progress

Moderation is a priority for the Ardrossan Cluster and staff meeting time has been given over to support departments in moderation time, some being given the opportunity to link with cluster colleagues on shared areas of the curriculum. All departments have a moderation plan for their work in this area throughout the year.

Several members of staff have been involved in moderation events across the South West Education Improvement Collaborative and this has been very beneficial.

Very good use is being made of SNSA (Scottish National Standardised Assessments) and teacher judgement survey data to identify pupils in need of additional supports which are to be funded by the Pupil Equity Fund.

Staff make good use of the tracking and monitoring system that we have in place to record pupil progress and identify those for whom interventions are required.

Tracking of wider achievement has been a recent development for the school and we have now developed an effective system of tracking wider achievement across the school. This will allow us to target pupils who require support to access opportunities for wider achievement and to ensure that pupils are being given opportunities on a equitable basis.

School improvement

We have strengthened our self evaluation procedures to ensure that all staff are involved in evaluating the work of the year and planning for improvement for the year to come. The school improvement plan was based on evaluations by departments and written by the DHTs responsible for each area. This has increased staff involvement and engagement.

We have altered our approach to staff focus groups to ensure that a range of Qis are considered across the session, not just those that would be a focus of inspection.

We continue to work closely with our Senior Manager, Alan MacDougall and Head of Service, Caroline Amos to evaluate our strengths and areas for improvement.

Performance Information

All departments are supported to make good use of INSIGHT, the CfE machine and authority data to ensure that robust analysis of our exam results take place in September. SLT meet each Faculty Leader to engage in dialogue and the identification of targets to be undertaken to work towards improving our outcomes for young people. Our data coach has developed a calendar of training events across the year to support staff in their use of data; this allows them to make best possible use of the reports she produces after each tracking period.

Staff are growing in confidence in the use of SNSA (Scottish National Standardised Assessments) and in making judgements about the achievement of a level in Curriculum for Excellence to ensure work is at an appropriate level for all young people and that they are making progress.

We closely monitor leavers’ destinations and work closely with SDS to ensure that pupils are provided with support in achieving their goals.
