    From the Manse . . .

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him.” John 13:3-5 (NRSV)

This passage always moves me. It is tender and gentle, humble and beautiful. The gesture of washing someone’s feet is very intimate. Most of us don’t like other people looking at our feet, let alone washing them for us. The disciples would have had dirty, dusty feet from walking along dry dusty roads – shared with donkeys, camels and goats. Hard calluses would have clung to their dry cracked grimy heels. Yet Jesus gets down on his hands and knees to wash the feet of his friends. He didn’t have to do it. Someone would have washed his feet, if he had asked them to. Instead, Jesus did this simple caring thing for his disciples and the first verse of the hymn “Meekness and Majesty” captures the glory of Jesus’ act of love:

“Meekness and majestyManhood and deityIn perfect harmony

The man who is GodLord of eternity

    Dwell in humanityKneels in humility

    And washes our feet.”

This one act sums up what and who Jesus is. It reminds us of the tenderness, care and presence of God in the everyday humble acts that we do for one another. So, as we journey through Lent (which began on 18th February) to the glory and mystery of Easter morning, let’s look to this simple gesture of love and remember that we are loved by God. Remember that God is present in every moment and that we are cared for just like the disciples with Jesus at their feet. May the journey through Lent help you to rest deeper in God and draw you closer to him as Easter approaches:

“Lord of infinityStooping so tenderlylifts our humanity to the heights of his throne.

O what a mysteryMeekness and majestyBow down and worshipFor this is your God!”

    Blessings

    Prayer Diary

Pastoral Care in Kirkgate ChurchHospital Visiting Visiting clergy no longer have access to in-patient lists at local hospitals, so the only way for the Minister to find out if you are in hospital is if a relative, friend or neighbour lets us know. The Minister’s details are below. You can also contact Miss Alison Buick (01294 464531) or Mrs Morag Forsyth (01294 463762) and visits will be organised.

Recruitment of Pastoral VisitorsWe only have one pastoral visitor working alongside our visiting elders, so we are always looking for additional pastoral visitors. If this is a way you could serve the church, please speak to the Minister. Most visitors only visit two or three people, so it is not an onerous commitment. If you are interested in becoming a pastoral visitor, you will have to join the PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups) Scheme. This scheme has replaced the former disclosure system for those working with vulnerable groups and we have coordinators who will guide you through the process.

    Rev Dorothy Granger (01294 463571)

    SPIRITUAL AWARENESSThe Three Trees

Once there were three trees that grew in a wood. One was a tall strong tree, one a medium average tree and one a small weak tree.

The tallest tree told the other two that it was going to be a pillar in a king’s palace and see lots of famous people. The medium tree told the others that it wasn’t going to stay where it was but it was going to be a boat and travel far off all over the world. The small tree supposed that because it was too weak to be any thing that it would stay where it was.

Time passed and along came a woodcutter who cut down the three trees. The tall tree was not made into a pillar for the King’s palace but it was made in to a manger for a stable, in which a King was born. The medium tree did become a boat, but it never did get to travel the world. Instead it stayed on a lake and was used as a pulpit by a man who preached love and forgiveness. The small tree was chopped down by the woodcutter and it was made into a cross. The tree was strong enough to carry a man who cried “Father forgive them “. The plans and ambitions for the trees did not work out but God’s plans did. Dear Lord God, sometimes I wonder however you can know everything about all the people in this world. There are so many people and many live so far apart. How do you manage to see us all at the same time and listen to our prayers? Thank you that you do, even if I don’t understand how, and thank you that it is possible for every person in the world to know you because you speak to them through your creation, through their conscience and through your word the Bible.

It’s sad that when you speak to people so many don’t bother to listen. Please help us to take time to listen to and to get to know you better.

    In Jesus’ name.

    Kirkgate Bible Studies in 2015

Lenten Bible Study: “The Way to Freedom” (created by Churches Together in Britain and Ireland). If anyone is still interested in being part of this group, the bible study will run on Wednesday evenings during Lent - 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th March from 7.30pm-9pm. The meeting will be held in the small hall and Andrew Bruce will conduct the meetings in Dorothy’s absence.

“The Way to Freedom” Few words seem to matter more to us today than ‘Freedom’, but what it means can be far from clear and it often sparks controversy. It’s a big word in the New Testament and in the Christian story down the ages. During the weeks of the study, we will be reflecting on the quest for freedom - in our own experience, in the life of our churches. We will also look at what freedom means in our society and the world today – and all in the light of our reading of the Bible.

The course comprises five weekly sessions - and the main themes will be: Freedom; Discipline; Action; Community; Suffering and Death. Each week contains a mixture of materials for reflection, Bible passages and commentary for study and discussion, poetry, questions and ideas for discussion, and sometimes suggestions of things to do.

The aim of the course is to help build up both our personal discipleship and our common life in Christ, as we study at home and as we share together as a group. After Easter, I plan to start an eight week New Testament Reading course which will take us up to the Summer recess. This is called the Community Bible Experience and will use material provided by Biblica. So watch the magazine for more information on this.

    Blessings,Dorothy

A Mother’s Love Her love is like

    an island in life’s ocean,

    vast and wide

    A peaceful, quiet shelter

From the wind, the rain, the tide.

‘Tis bound on the north by Hope,

    By Patience on the West,

By tender Counsel on the South

And on the East by Rest.

Above it like a beacon light

    Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer;

And thro’ the changing scenes of life

    I find a haven there.

Property Committee ReportSEAFIELD MANSE Roof tiles for the Seafield Drive Manse should arrive this week and weather permitting the builders will take the earliest opportunity to replace the broken and damaged tiles.

CHURCH ROOF We are in the process of obtaining estimates for the roof work at the church. The erection of scaffolding will be required to allow the work to progress safely. Once the estimates have been approved and a builder selected I would hope by that time the weather will have improved considerably.

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS All going well, the applications for Listed Building Planning Consent will now be registered with North Ayrshire Council. One application will be for the removal of the windows from the former Barony St John’s and the 2nd application is to reinstate the windows into Ardrossan & Saltcoats Kirkgate Parish Church. Planning applications do take time and we are looking at approximately 2 months before we will know the outcome.

WAR MEMORIAL PLAQUES The war memorial plaques from Barony St John’s have now been erected on the church walls in the open area vacated by the pews.

COTTAGE Awaiting the final estimate for the work that requires to be done in the cottage. Cunninghame Properties handle the cottage for the church and we are in consultation with them to seek a suitable solution, as the cottage will require to be vacated while the work is carried out.

MONTGOMERIE MANSE Work is ongoing at the Manse to resolve issues that were reported as a result of the annual visit. Main problem was water ingress through the windows and a trial solution has been in place and hopefully this will resolve the issue. Water ingress via the flat roof area and the porch is also causing damage and the builders have been requested to look at this problem. Some of the minor problems have been repaired and we will look at the other areas that the Property teams raised in due course.

    Kirk Session News

The Kirk Session met on Thursday, 12th February 2015 for ordinary business. The main items to note are:

Finance:• A budget had still to be set for 2015 but income

and expenditure for the start of the year appeared to be on target.

    • The charge for external groups wishing to use the church hall was reviewed and it was agreed to keep the charge the same as last year - £45 per night.

Property: There is a lot happening with property at present which will involve significant expenditure on repairs.

    • Both the Seafield and Montgomerie Manses have received their annual visits and these have highlighted several areas needing attention, including storm damage sustained at the Seafield Manse. The Church Cottage has a major problem with black mould in the bathroom and utility room which will involve the bathroom units being removed and replaced.

    • Our planning application for the removal and reinstallation of stained glass windows from Barony St John’s to Kirkgate is progressing, and full information will be given to the Kirk Session and congregation once we know the outcome of the planning application.

    • Our gas contractor will be asked to look at the heating (or lack of) within the large hall as it is noticeably cooler since the new boiler was installed.

    • Repairs to the church gates and fencing are pending at present with quotes being procured for the insurance company.

Health Check reportRev. Elizabeth Watson had submitted a very comprehensive and encouraging report following her recent visit for the Local Church Review. The Kirk Session approved the report for submission to Presbytery.

Kirk Session CommitteesThe structure and membership of the various Kirk Session committees was agreed.

Sound and lightApproval was given to purchase some new wireless microphones for the church. A decision on a new digital projector was deferred to a future date.

Other business• Communion dates were agreed for 2015. The

next communion is on Palm Sunday - 29th March.

    • Church cleaning: several members of the cleaning teams have expressed a desire to “retire”. A final appeal will be made to the congregation for assistance to try and avoid the need to employ a cleaner.

    • Approval was given for a Girl Guide pack to use the church halls for a weekend stay at the end of May.

    • Approval was given to hold a service for the Orange Lodge in Saltcoats to hold their Divine Service in the church on Sunday 10th May at 3pm.

Presbytery NewsFebruary 2015 Rev. David Watson, Largs Clark Memorial, was appointed as convenor of the Mission Committee.

The Ministries Council concurred in the decision of Presbytery to grant Kilwinning Mansefield Trinity permission to call a minister.

Thanks were extended to all who attended the Data Protection seminar. [We’ll be hearing more on this as a congregation soon - Ed].

The initial assessment of the revised Presbytery structure indicated that on the whole it was working well, with only a few areas of concern.

The Vacancy Procedure Committee formally sustained the call from Kilbirnie Auld Kirk to the Rev David Whiteman. The induction, however had taken place on 28th January, making this decision a formality!

Under the Stewardship, Finance & Property Committee, a reminder was given that Edith Scott, Stewardship Copnsultant is available to help congregations free of charge.

Cumbrae Parish Church has closed temporarily and are currently meeting in the local DA Hall until safety precautions is carried out.

Largs Clark Memorial had a large piece of stonework fall from an archway in the chancel area. The repair will involve removing a stained glass window. The cost of £75,000 was approved subject to approval by the General Trustees.

The cost of restoration and alterations at Ardeer Parish Church is greater than anticipated and further discussions with the Heritage Lottery Fund will take place to seek additional funding.

Friends of South Beach HouseAt present there are 32 full time residents and 5 respite. There are 6 permanent places available at present some of which will be filled soon.

There also vacancies for two staff members.
