Cape Cod Woodturners
Minutes and News
June 2018
President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 31 members and guests to the meeting.
Update from Mike Grady on Beads of Courage Boxes
On May 10, the Western Mass Woodturners delivered eighteen Beads of Courage boxes
from WMW and CCW to Bay State Children's Hospital. Beads of Courage coordinator
Sarah Framarin received the boxes on behalf of the children and was absolutely
delighted. She said there will be an ongoing need for the boxes because Bay State
Children's treats approximately twelve new patients each month. The hospital has limited
storage space so it was decided to hold back some of the boxes and keep them in the
club's inventory for the next delivery.
Thanks to all from CCW who are participating in this community support project!

Rise and Shine Program 2018
Nine students and their instructor from Monomoy High School worked with 12 CCW
mentors over 2 mornings in May making pens (either solid or laminated), honey dippers,
or small bowls.
Many thanks to Dave Arnone for his primary role in organizing this important
community project for the club. Participants included Dave, Don Chase, Bruce
Benwood, Jan Casiello, Richard Wright, Mike Traynor, Mike Grady, Marc Sitkin,
Clarke Buchanan, Bob Reynolds, Steve Patzman, and Robin McIntyre.
Upcoming programs and events
In July, Don Chase will do a demonstration on turning pens. Our CCW July meeting
will be on the second Wed in July, July 11th to avoid conflict with the July 4th
celebrations of many families. Mike Grady has our demonstrations planned through
the end of 2018. During the July meeting, we will be breaking into small groups
to collect ideas for next year's demonstrations and sawdust sessions--bring your
thoughts! If you can't attend, email your ideas to Mike.
The August demo will be Rick Angus from Central New England Woodturners
demonstrating "Spindle Turning Practice for Everyone."
September will feature Vic Mastro presenting "Inside/Out Turning".
In October, Clarke Buchanan will demonstrate the twice turned bowl.
This year's CCW demonstration at the 13th annual Tool Discovery Day at the
Chester Ranlett Tool Museum, Route 6, Eastham will be July 22--Marc Sitkin is
our club liaison. Volunteers will be allowed to sell their crafts and anyone can
tailgate and sell tools. Back your car in, set up a card table, and join in the fun to
sell tools that you aren't using. The event is open to the public from 11 am-3 pm with
setup at 10 am. The Museum is next to the Eastham post office.
The Society 66th Annual show will be held at Drummer Boy Park, Route 6A (773
Main Street), West Brewster on August 7, 8, and 9, from 10am-5pm. Several CCW
turners will be participating in this show and sale--Wayne Shepard, Jim Silva,
Richard Wright, and Mike Grady. Hope to see you there to support them!
Marstons Mills Village Day, a street fair that the club has demonstrated at for
several years, is September 9. Last year we gave out about 70 tops that members had
turned. Please turn some tops for the kids again. To avoid choking hazard, they must
be a minimum height of 2 1/4" and minimum diameter of 1 1/4".
Bass Hole in Yarmouth has been reserved for the September picnic. Save the date--
9/15!
Segmented Woodturning Symposium , October 11-14, 2018, Marriott West Hotel,
St. Louis Missouri. Registration is open! www.segmentedwoodturning.org
Mike Grady has scheduled Mike Mahoney via video and real time interaction
with Mike Mahoney on October 20, Saturday from 1-4 p.m. There will likely be 3
topics over the 3 hour session for $15 per person. This is an added value to all club
members.
The Holly Berry Bazaar in November benefits Cape Cod Hospital Two years ago
at the last Bazaar, wood products sold about $5,000 overall. Please consider donating
turnings to this worthy community project. Either you can price items or ask them to
price them.
Raffle Opportunity
Steve Abbot generously donated a Craftsman Industrial Dovetail jig to the club.
Raffle tickets are being sold for $5 with a limit of 24 tickets sold. Be sure to get yours
and take a chance on this great tool.
Pen turning opportunity for all
The club now owns 5 pen maker kits which can be loaned out to club members. If
you are interested in trying a kit, see Dave Arnone. Try it, you'll like it--they make great
gifts!
Friends Don't Let Friends Breathe Dust
On these dry, low humidity days, even if it's too nice out to turn, open up your shop for
several hours with good cross ventilation to clear and change the air. Have you taken
your dust collector filters out recently to blow them out with compressed air? How about
your shop vac filter? Take advantage of the low humidity days to air out and clean out,
for the sake of your lungs.

New for June from Richard Wright: Here is another site which might be of interest. Lots

Newsletter contest results
Our club entered the CCW annual newsletter contest--a first for us! Although we didn't
place in the contest, we garnered a respectable 58.4 out of 80 points. Thanks to all who
keep sending contributions to add to the newsletter. Please continue to contribute!

Mentoring program
Remember that our club mentoring program is available to all members. About a
dozen club members serve as mentors. New turners will be matched with an experienced
turner who can help you learn the basics. Experienced turners who want to learn more
about a certain technique or project will be matched with a mentor. Sign up for the
program on our website or chat with Dave Arnone or Mike Grady who are chairing the
program for the club. Learn something new and have fun
Also, if you would like to experience working on a variety of size lathes, let Dave know
and he can set up that exposure for you in one shop setting.
Remember that we have mentoring for demonstrators, too.
The Club Tote is filling up! If you have some turnings that you would like to donate
for club sales, please get them to Clarke. We will get you a donation slip for your
taxes along with our thanks. Smaller, inexpensive items tend to sell well. We have
about 40 items in the tote that were donated by club members for our next event.
Need supplies?
The club has thin and medium CA glue for $8 per 2 oz. bottle, double backed tape for
$11 per roll, and end grain sealer for $12/gallon. These are available at meetings. You
can also contact Clarke about the end grain sealer. The club makes a small profit on
these bulk purchased items but you save!
Bradford Pear wood
Pear wood is available from the Mayo House in Chatham. If you take some, be sure to
bring back a turned piece for the Chatham Conservation Foundation. Steve brought
one of his turnings to them and they were thrilled with the results! Tonight we had Mark
Snyder's pear out of pear wood--see the Show and Tell in this newsletter.

Featured Presentation
Wood Identification by Peter Wild and Vic Mastro
Peter has been an arborist for 40+ years and shared his insights on identifying trees.
He recommends The Tree Identification Book by George Symonds as a good
resource (ISBN 978-0-688-05039-9).
The major catagories of characteristics to think about are:
overall shape and form of the tree
bark--is it smooth, plated, or one of many types of fissured bark
leaf--is it serrated, what is the veination
thorns present or not
flowers
fruit
twigs and buds
needles
Vic has had a lifelong interest in and career in forestry and entomology.
Cross section of a log
Horizontal section of a log
Magnifiers are important for examining wood--get a 10x magnifier since the
descriptions are based on what can be seen at that level of magnification.
Thanks, Vic and Peter, for an interesting and informative presentation!
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday,
July 11, 2018 at 6:30
at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod
