CAPE COD’S timeless popularity is likely due to the draw of each town’s unique character quilted together tocreate this special peninsula. The 15 towns of “The Cape”, some of which are also home to multiple small villages, appeal to residents and visitors with varied interests. Towns are grouped into four regions, each with its ownpersonality: Upper Cape, Mid-Cape, Lower Cape and Outer Cape. The Upper Cape includes four towns as differentas the seashells found on their shores - Falmouth, Bourne, Sandwich and Mashpee. The towns of Barnstable,Yarmouth and Dennis are considered Mid-Cape, while Brewster, Harwich and Chatham comprise the Lower Cape. The Outer Cape towns are Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. The entire Cape falls withinBarnstable County.”

UPPER CAPE

At the Cape’s threshold, providingaccess via the Bourne, Sagamoreand railroad bridges, lies the town ofBourne. With its many harbors, covesand inlets, this town is perfect forbeaching, swimming, fishing andboating. Its “hub” location, offers easyaccess to Martha’s Vineyard, Boston,Providence and Newport, makingBourne one of the Cape’s mostconvenient destinations. The flutedscallop shell and its succulent bountyare celebrated annually in Septemberat the Bourne Scallop Festival.

Falmouth is probably best knownfor its annual road race. EveryAugust, runners from around theglobe traverse seven scenic miles ofpavement along Nantucket Soundbetween Woods Hole and FalmouthHeights. Falmouth is also home toNobska Point Light, Shining SeaBikeway, Spohr Gardens and theWoods Hole Oceanographic Institute.Considered a gateway to Martha’sVineyard, the Steamship Authorityoffers ferry service to the island fromWoods Hole. (Service to Nantucket isalso offered from Hyannis in the Mid-Cape.)

Founded in 1637, Sandwich is oneof our country’s oldest towns. Catch aglimpse of Cape Cod’s past while

meandering along the historic streetsof Sandwich. Visit its historicalmuseums, pedal along the Cape CodCanal Bicycle Path or stroll down theSandwich Boardwalk to enjoy viewsof Cape Cod Bay. In late spring,Heritage Museums & Gardenspresents a spectacular display ofDexter Rhododendrons.

Mashpee boasts miles of sandy, ocean beaches and four of thelargest freshwater ponds on CapeCod. In 1620, the Pilgrims weregreeted by the native MashpeeWampanoag Tribe, which finallygained federal recognition in 2010. Ifyou visit in early July, be sure toattend the annual Wampanoag PowWow, where you can witnessauthentic tribal drumming anddancing.

MID-CAPE

The Mid-Cape, which includes thetowns of Barnstable, Yarmouth andDennis, is a dichotomy betweenhistory and commerce. To the north isRoute 6A, the largest contiguoushistoric district in the United States. Also called the Old King’s Highway, after England’s King George III, thisrambling road is lined with ancienttrees, historic inns and taverns,

churches and sea captain’s homes.Barnstable, the largest and most

populous town on Cape Cod,includes seven villages: Barnstableproper, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis,Marstons Mills, Osterville and WestBarnstable. Home to the Cape CodMall, Hyannis’ central location is alsothe main hub for transportation viaairplanes, trains and busses providingvisitors easy access to locations bothon and off Cape.

Yarmouth’s villages areYarmouthport, South Yarmouth andWest Yarmouth. Located to the southalong Rte. 28, South Yarmouth andWest Yarmouth attract families toseaside resorts along the warm waterbeaches of Nantucket Sound. A vastarray of activities, from art exhibits atthe new Cultural Center of Cape Codto mini-golf and go carts, attract “kids”of all ages. To the north, along Route6A, historic Yarmouthport appeals tovisitors in search of a most peacefulvacation. Many historic homes havebeen converted to bed-and-breakfastinns, surrounded by nature trails andsites such as the Captain BangsHouse Museum, Taylor-Bray Farmand the Edward Gorey House.

The town of Dennis includes thevillages of East Dennis, West Dennis,Dennis proper and South Dennis. Some of the best beaches on Cape

Cod can be found on both sides of town.Chapin, Mayflower and Corporationbeaches stretch along Cape Cod Bay tothe north, while the Sea Street and WestDennis beaches sit along NantucketSound to the south. Dennis is also hometo Scargo Tower, the Josiah DennisManse historic home, Cape Cod Museumof Art and the Cape Playhouse, thenation’s oldest professional summertheatre.

Past and present run parallel routesthrough the Mid-Cape, offering visitors thebest of both worlds. Historic as well asscenic, Route 6A features the 17th-, 18th-and 19th-century homes quietlyinterspersed with antique shops, artgalleries and restaurants. On the south,Route 28 is bustling with activity andcommerce. The choice of either quietrelaxation or lively fun makes the Mid-Cape area a popular destination.

LOWER CAPE

If you look at the Cape as a flexed arm,the towns around the elbow—Brewster,Harwich and Chatham—make up theLower Cape.

With gorgeous ocean vistas, a much-photographed lighthouse, and dozens ofshops along the charming old MainStreet, Chatham’s walking village attractsthousands of visitors each year. Popularsummer events include the Friday nightband concerts in the park, the VFWclambakes and the Chatham A’s CapeCod Baseball League games. The movie“Chatham” was filmed here in 2010, withBurt Reynolds starring as a retired seacaptain.

Once an enclave for sea captains,Brewster offers a variety of quaint inns, restaurants and beaches. Antique shopsand art galleries line the Old King’sHighway (historic Route 6A) and the townof Brewster is also home to the Cape CodMuseum of Natural History.

A cluster of seven villages, Harwichoffers beautiful beaches on Nantucket

Sound, as well as a number ofpicturesque ponds. Celebrated for itsagricultural impact, Harwich is well knownfor its cranberry festival held annually ineach fall. It is also home to the CedarSpring Herb Farm and the Cape CodLavender Farm.

OUTER CAPE

Beginning with the town of Orleans justpast Cape’s “elbow”, is the Outer Cape, which also includes Eastham, Wellfleet,Truro and Provincetown.

From the Cape Cod National Seashoreto the artists’ colony of Provincetown, theOuter Cape offers a diverse mix ofactivities and scenery for singles, couples, families and groups. Orleans,Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro andProvincetown all boast miles of biking andhiking trails, notable restaurants, andhistoric sites. Did you know that Truro, featured numerous times in Omnimagazine, is allegedly a hotspot for UFOsightings?

The romantic, wild Outer Cape is farremoved from the other more suburbanparts of the Cape, with vast stretches ofunspoiled beaches. Enjoy the 1,000-acreMassachusetts Audubon Society’sWellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, go on awhale watch, or retrace Henry DavidThoreau’s footsteps if you choose.Orleans offers a nice balance of town andcountry while Eastham, Truro andWellfleet are quite sedate and rural andProvincetown is lively and unique.

Provincetown is the best-known gaysummer resort on the East Coast. With itswhaling and fishing history, fanciful innsand bustling Commercial Street,Provincetown enchants all who visit. Itsprominent past and present residentsinclude artists, poet laureates, international journalists and playwrights.

Cape Cod, the Islands ofNantucket and Martha’sVineyard, and Plymouthmeet the criteria for uniqueeducational experiences, raising the awareness ofstudent travelers. THE ISLANDS

Martha's Vineyard is a wonderful mix ofarchitectural styles and variedlandscapes. Up-Island are country stores, remote galleries, sheep farms, and thewind-buffeted, gray-shingled homes ofthe rural towns of West Tisbury, Chilmark,Menemsha and Gay Head (Aquinnah). The larger and more active towns, withtheir fine restaurants, galleries andshops, are located down island inEdgartown, Oak Bluffs and VineyardHaven.

The island owes its name to CaptainBartholomew Gosnold who, in 1602,christened the island “Martha’s” in honorof his infant daughter and “Vineyard” forthe abundance of wild grapes he found.(It is ironic that an island named“vineyard” would later become apredominantly “dry” vacation retreat, withthe exception of Oak Bluffs andEdgartown.) One of several islands inDuke’s County, Martha’s Vineyard is thelargest (about 120 square miles) andmost accessible.

Once a major seaport until theconstruction of the Cape Cod Canalrerouted shipping traffic, it is now thedestination of those seeking solitude andsociety. In spite of it all, Martha’sVineyard maintains its rural ambianceand continuity with the past.

Vineyard Haven, which makes up themajority of Tisbury, is the transportationhub and commercial center of the island. It is from here that ferries shuttle visitorsto and from Woods Hole. Packed withshops, bookstores and restaurants,Vineyard Haven is the chief year-roundtown and summer colony.

Nantucket Island is an otherworldlylandscape of ponds, moors, dwarf treesand thickets where birds and animals findshelter, and cranberry bogs that form amagic carpet of color in autumn.

The mood on Nantucket is verydifferent from the hustle and bustle of the

mainland. Here, 30 miles out to sea, peace pervades the atmosphere, and thearchitecture retains its dignity. Strikingblue hydrangeas accent the weathered-shingle cottages, and trellises overgrownwith roses conceal passageways to lovelygardens. Century-old elms shadecobblestoned Main Street, remarkably

unchanged from its early days.Nantucket’s long-gone whaling fleet

was responsible for lighting most of theworld’s oil lamps. As early as the late1600s, islanders knew of the utility of thehuge mammals, and it only took a brieftime before the islanders discovered theunlimited uses of their various anatomicalparts. By the early 19th century, theisland had reached the height of itsprosperity and renown as the center ofthe world’s whaling fishery. All islandersshared in the enormous profits thatindustry provided, from a harbor frontteeming with whaling-related commerceto a town replete with rooming andboarding houses.
