JOB DESCRIPTION

Main purpose of the role

The post holder is responsible for leading and managing communications for WCRF International (WCRFI) and for providing strategic advice to WCRF’s network of national charities in the US, Netherlands, UK and Hong Kong. He/she has responsibility for managing the International Communications, Web & Design Teams, encompassing website and digital communications, design, brand management, corporate communications, international media relations, policy support and network-wide messaging. The post holder will lead in developing and delivering an ambitious strategy to communicate and market our cancer prevention message across all communication channels and to an increasing range of stakeholders. S/he is responsible for brand projection and protection and will provide strategic advice to members of the WCRF network to maintain the integrity of the brand, the reputation of the network and the promotion of our key messages. The Director is a member of the Network Management Team and will work closely with the Executive Director of Science & Public Affairs, fellow Heads of Department, Directors of the national charities’ and other stakeholders, both internal and external to the organisation. This will require strong collaborative skills and a consensus-building leadership style.

The post holder will report to the Executive Director, Network Operations. Main duties and responsibilities

A Strategy Development

1 Develop and implement WCRF International’s communications strategy to support the organisational objectives, working closely with senior executives and colleagues within the science, policy, health information and fundraising teams.

2 Develop and manage the delivery of WCRF International’s digital media strategy including website design and functionality and use of social media.

3 Position WCRF International as an authoritative voice with the media on cancer prevention, delivering high–quality media coverage.

4 Develop a WCRF network-wide communications strategy, and provide advice to the charities’ on the implementation of the strategy to position the network as an authoritative voice in the global cancer debate.

5 Develop and implement a communications strategy for our programme involving Hong Kong Ambassadors to promote our research work and activities in the Asian region.

B Communications

1 Lead, manage and coordinate communications across the network, ensuring the work meets organisational priorities and responds to the needs of the President, Executive Team and the Board

2 Facilitate effective joint-working with members of the WCRF Network, ensuring an organisational wide and coherent approach to communications and messages

3 Develop the organisational narrative, and manage its dissemination across the range of communications in terms of message, style and tone, ensuring all members of the WCRF Network speak with one voice using a common language with agreed key messages

4 Coordinate and maintain oversight on campaign activities for the charities, developing and testing campaign concepts, which serve to increase the global voice, reach and impact of the WCRF Network

5 Establish quarterly global communication meetings to include all entities, taking the lead to resolve issues of concern and build consensus for agreed global messages and communication strategies

6 Provide expert advice to a range of personnel, on the content, quality and presentation of all communications materials, particularly for WCRF International

7 Develop and deliver content for WCRF International, including website copy, news stories, press releases, corporate information, social media, blogs, science and policy products, working closely with the science and policy teams

C Media Relations

1 Develop and implement WCRF International’s media strategy and approve media communications in collaboration with the relevant executives

2 Identify and evaluate PR risks, further developing and implementing the WCRF network’s ‘crisis’ communications plan, with robust procedures to respond to any potential reputational management issue if and when applicable

4 Respond to breaking news stories relevant to WCRF International based on our scientific findings and policy expertise

5 Develop a network of credible external supporters who can talk about cancer-related issues on WCRF International’s behalf

6 Be a lead spokesperson for WCRF International and the network, dealing with press enquiries, including those of a controversial nature, to promote the organisation’s public profile and encourage positive media coverage

7 Build and manage media relations to maximise coverage to raise the profile of WCRF International and the WCRF Network, building effective relationships with journalists, researchers and the media

D External Relations/Stakeholder Management

1 Undertake a stakeholder analysis and map out all various external stakeholders for WCRF UK

2 Take the lead on the management and development of stakeholders for WCRF UK

3 Develop key stakeholder, media and marketing relationships to ensure effective partnerships to secure opportunities for greater reach & coverage

4 Develop a stakeholder and partnership engagement strategy that develops influential relationships for WCRF International and the wider network

E Branding

1 Working closely with senior executives, review WCRF’s brand strategy in support of the organisational vision and mission, ensuring that that the corporate image and branding is maintained throughout internal and external communications channels.

2 Take responsibility for the development and maintenance of our brand across all communication activities, providing guidance to the network and developing a clear brand strategy to enable the Network to capitalise on its brand and profile

3 Create and update key information and clear and consistent messages about our work F Marketing

1 Commission regular market research including competitor analysis, demographic, economic and charity trends and identify competitor tactics to secure new opportunities and meet emerging market challenges

3 Manage the production of marketing and promotional materials for the organisation, developing briefs, writing and managing the production of all corporate publications

G Web, Social Media, Blogs and Digital Marketing

1 Oversee the development of strategy for the Network’s websites in consultation with the individual charities, ensure content is consistent with our brand and that the sites are technically robust and stable

2 Oversee the development and implementation of a social media strategy for WCRF International and provide guidance to the network members as required

3 Evaluate WCRF’s digital marketing to include a review of new and emerging social media and opportunities presented by mobile technologies

4 Working with colleagues, ensure that any PR features are cross promoted via social media sites, blogs, other WCRF websites (as applicable) and where appropriate other sites as part of an integrated communications and marketing approach

5 Produce WCRF International’s e-news mailings and digital marketing to promote our cancer prevention messages

6 Write content for the WCRF International blog, including identifying and managing influential guest authors

7 Produce and manage content for the WCRF International website, ensuring content stays current, accurate and impactful

H Science & Policy

1 Proactively work with the science department to find opportunities to promote particular studies or achievements

2 Identify creative and novel approaches to communicate progress in our key programme areas such as our grant programme (regular and RFA), Continuous Update Project (CUP) and WCRF Academy

3 Provide communications advice and support to the Policy and Public Affairs department I Staff Management

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Salaries

World Cancer Research Fund International pays salaries into bank accounts once a month on the 26th of each month.

Flexi-time scheme

A flexi-time scheme is in operation across the organisation. The daily requirement is to work 7.5 hours. Staff also need to take a lunch break of at least 30 minutes (staff can take up to a maximum of 1 hour and 30 minutes for lunch). The core hours are 10.00am–4.30pm, Monday to Friday when all employees must be present. Employees may arrive for work between 8.30am and 10.00am and leave between 4.30pm and 7.00pm. The daily minimum hourly requirement of 7.5 working hours per day plus lunch must be met; any extra time cannot be "rolled over" or "banked”.

Annual leave

World Cancer Research Fund UK’s annual leave year runs from 1 October to 30 September. Annual entitlement for full-time staff is in relation to length of service:

§ Less than 1 year of continuous service at the beginning of a holiday year: 25 days (pro-rated to your start date)

§ 1 year or more of continuous service at the beginning of a holiday year: 26 days

§ 3 years or more of continuous service at the beginning of a holiday year: 28 days

§ 5 years or more of continuous service at the beginning of a holiday year: 30 days

Sick leave

For full-time staff, World Cancer Research Fund International allows up to 12 days sick leave in any year without deducting pay. This allowance is accrued at the rate of 1 day per month.

Pension plan

We have a voluntary contributory pension scheme. Members of the scheme contribute a min of 3% up to max of 5% of their salary. Contributions are deducted from salaries. The organisation matches a maximum of 5% (and offers a discretionary top up payment of up to 4% depending on the financial position of the organisation). You are eligible to join the scheme after successful completion of the probationary period.

Private healthcare

We offer private healthcare for employees, which gives all employees access to private healthcare (hospital and outpatient care) by referral from NHS. You are eligible to join the scheme after successful completion of the probationary period.

Dental cover scheme

We offer all employees a contribution to their dental expenses by allowing employees to opt in to a dental cover scheme. You are eligible to join the scheme after successful completion of the probationary period.

Life assurance and income protection

We cover all employees from their first day of employment and provide cover, which is equal to 4 x the individual’s salary on death while employed along side critical illness cover.

Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) scheme

All permanent members of staff, up to the age of 65, whose normal hours of work are at least 15 per week, are covered by the organisation’s Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) Scheme, at no cost to employees. PHI is intended to provide income protection in the event of long-term illness or disability. The scheme provides an income replacement of up to 50% of the basic annual salary after a waiting period of 26 weeks, starting from the date a disability commences.

Season ticket loan scheme

Employees can take advantage of an interest free loan for a purchase of an annual travel ticket. The loan is repaid via equal deductions from the employee’s salary over a 12-month period. You are eligible to join this benefit after successful completion of the probationary period.

Cycle to work scheme

Employees can take advantage of an interest free loan for a purchase of a tax-free bike or accessories. The loan is repaid via equal deductions from the employee’s salary over a 12-month period. You are eligible to join this benefit after successful completion of the probationary period.

Childcare vouchers

World Cancer Research Fund International offers its employees the opportunity to purchase childcare vouchers by exchanging part of their salary for childcare vouchers.

Employee assistance programme

All employees, and their families, have access to a 24-hour confidential advice and support line.

Development opportunities

World Cancer Research Fund International has an annual appraisal process in place during which individual development needs are discussed and training needs identified.

Probationary period and notice period

The post-holder is subject to a 6-month probation period during which 1 week’s notice on either part will apply. Following successful completion of the probationary period the post-holder will be on 1 month’s notice period.
