Anthony BartoloAnthony’s 20-year career within cloud & mobile services enables him to be a trusted advisor within business, consumer and technical communities. He takes great pride in architecting and conducting “science experiments” that incorporate Microsoft technology and services to address customer problems or opportunities. Some of the more interesting Proof of Concepts completed have included teaching drones to identify objects to aid in search and rescue efforts and automating research via Azure Functions to extract information from social media to aid law enforcement in finding children reported missing. Results and best practices of these and other projects are then shared openly with the community at large to help upskill everyone. Current State of UEM

• Unified endpoint management is in its early phase as a market, and the capabilities linking UEM tools to their enterprise mobility management and client management tool predecessors will diminish in importance.

• UEM tools function as an orchestration point for policy and configuration, but do not operate in isolation. Instead, they integrate with security and identity infrastructures and, in most 2018 implementations, legacy CMT products.

• UEM solutions continue to expand management capabilities across endpoint classes, including mobile, the Internet of Things, wearables and PCs. CMTs largely remain focused on PCs only.

IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software 2018SOURCE: "IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software 2018 Vendor Assessment" by Phil Hochmuth, July 2018 IDC # US43294318

IDC MarketScape vendor analysis model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of ICT suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each vendor’s position within a given market. The Capabilities score measures vendor product, go-to-market and business execution in the short-term. The Strategy score measures alignment of vendor strategies with customer requirements in a 3-5-year timeframe. Vendor market share is represented by the size of the circles. Vendor year-over-year growth rate relative to the given market is indicated by a plus, neutral or minus next to the vendor name.

Recommendations

Infrastructure and operations professionals tasked with modernizing mobile, endpoint and wearable computing management should:

• Create an endpoint strategy that can scale by focusing on tools with strengths in areas critical to the business. Use the custom weightings in this research to tailor scores.

• Choose a tool that can support migration from CMT, if a move to UEM depends on modernizing legacy PC management processes. Not all vendors excel in this use case.

• Create a vendor shortlist by selecting vendors that perform well across multiple use cases. Acknowledge that not all vendors will excel across all of the use cases presented.

Gartner's Predictions

Gartner predicts that, during the next three to five years, organizations will face pressure to support UEM as a means to provide greater user platform choice and to fully achieve the endpoint management requirements of modern OSs, despite a minority of firms using UEM. Critical use cases for UEM include:

• Evaluating tools based on their ability to provide a single console for configuration and management for a growing number of increasingly diverse devices, tools and features to support mobile-only use cases carried over from EMM

• Helping in the migration of PCs from CMT management to UEM
