DePauw has a rich tradition of Greek Life that dates back more than 175 years. The values of life-long friendship, leadership, service, and scholarship are the cornerstones that are meaningful to alumni and current students, alike. Fraternities and sororities began as a central part of the social experience at DePauw and much of that is still a part of student life today. Both students and alumni have articulated how important the quality of the social experience is as a complement that does not deter from their academic experiences. Thus, the University’s commitment to residential, liberal arts education is supported by our fraternity and sorority chapter houses.

I have the privilege of working with a highly motivated, hard working group of professionals in Campus Living and Community Development (CLCD) who are dedicated to creating a student experience that is both challenging and supportive. We are committed to balancing student needs and student learning in every interaction, whether that takes place in our office, at social and educational programs, or a serendipitous conversation on campus. We build leadership skills and encourage community building and self-governance with our fraternity and sorority leaders to help them shape their DePauw experience.

Living on campus is an integral part of the student experience. DePauw provides a residential experience that is progressive by class year with different types of living communities that complement students' in-class learning. Chapter houses are an important component of the residential options on campus. Our deferred recruitment model allows students the opportunity to transition to campus and the academic experience as well as the time for exploration before making the life-long commitment to a Greek-lettered organization. Immersion within these communities enhances each students’ intellectual exploration and personal development, linking liberal arts education with life's work. Rather than focusing on where you live, the emphasis is on who you live with and how you learn together. The residential experience allows students to engage in the collegiate environment and integrate their learning in a variety of settings, including daily interactions with faculty, staff, and peers.

Support and resources are provided by the CLCD staff to chapter officers, members, advisors, council members, and officers in addition to Inter/National headquarters staff, alumni, house corporation boards, and parents of current members and potential new members. Our goal is to serve as a link between the University and the various constituent groups related to the twenty-five fraternities and sororities currently at DePauw.

It has been an active year on campus and this report is intended to supply basic information about fraternity and sorority life (FSL) as well as highlight the activities and achievements of our community. The report also contains information about membership, general trends, and the work of CLCD over the past academic year. While the successes of the past year have been exciting, there is still much to be done. If you have feedback or questions about information included in this report, please contact us. The InterFraternity Council (IFC) is made up of nine fraternities on DePauw University’s campus. Eight of these organizations are also members of the North American InterFraternity Conference (NIC), a nationally-based organization comprised of inter/national social men’s fraternities.

The 2016 executive board completed the year with a successful recruitment, despite lower enrollment numbers at DePauw University. IFC held a medium sized recruitment with about 200 participants. Our executive team in extremely grateful that we were able to assist these men in finding their chapter on our campus.

The 2017 IFC executive board, which includes 9 elected representatives from the member fraternities, administers its fraternities and operates to connect them with the larger DePauw community. The 2017 IFC executive board is comprised of members representing the following chapters of Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Tau Delta, Delta Upsilon, Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI), Phi Delta Theta, Phi Kappa Psi, and Sigma Chi.

The leadership of this executive board falls under our President, Nathaniel Reed (Sigma Chi, ’18), who previously served as Vice President of Risk Management on the 2016 IFC executive team. Like-wise, Mitchell Davis (Vice President of Operations, Phi Delta Theta, ’18), Benjamin Kusber (Vice President of Recruitment, Sigma Chi, ’18), Andrew Bertucci (Vice President of New Member Education, Delta Upsilon, ’18), Abhishek Sambatur (Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, Delta Upsilon, ’19), Richard Costas (Vice President of Risk Management, Sigma Chi, ’19), Ian Epkey (Vice President of Finance, Delta Upsilon, ’19), Andrew Fournier (Vice President of Communications, Phi Delta Theta, ’18), and Grant Rademacher (Vice President of Scholarship, Delta Tau Delta, ’19) serve as representatives in the 2017 IFC executive board.

Conversations around campus have surrounded the topics of Risk Management, Sexual Assault, Diversity and Inclusion, and Responsible Leadership. Our IFC executive board has taken significant steps to address each of these issues within our organizations and across other Greek and non-Greek groups on campus. Some of the most significant changes include the establishment of three teams that solely focus on efforts towards improving our risk management (including sexual assault), diversity and inclusion, and responsible leadership both internally and externally around campus. These groups have allowed us to progress rapidly in each area, including lowering average BACs and hospital visits through banning hard alcohol in chapters, establishing a Title IX infraction code into our recruitment rules, and creating better new member education opportunities to create a more inclusive environment for all in our community and the wider campus.

Through the guidance of the 2017 executive team, this IFC hopes to continue our efforts into the Fall 2017 semester so we can connect ourselves with the other Greek communities to establish a deeper connection. One way we plan on doing this is through a more cohesive and hyped Greek Week that will feature six teams that include chapters from all Greek communities on campus. As we work continually towards becoming a self-sanctioning organization, we will be in contact with administra-tion and chapter presidents to reform and reshape our statures to more closely become that “best Greek community” that both IFC and Dr. Mark McCoy hope to become.

The 2016-2017 academic year was yet another exciting year for DePauw’s Panhellenic Association. In August, the women held a retreat to spend some time reflecting on the goals and expectations set at the beginning of their term and to articulate their overall vision for the community. The vision incorporates values of the community, which are then used to make the programming calendar for the year. By connecting the values of the community with the calendar the Executive Council actively works to provide values-based programming throughout the academic year. To focus on academics and foster relationships with faculty, Panhellenic held its most successful Majors Dinner yet, an event that invites professors and Panhellenic women to meet in a casual, non-classroom setting. The event involved 40 professors and over 300 Panhellenic women. A new academic programming opportunity for the Panhellenic was the celebration of Month of the Scholar through the scholarship week events, which included both a social media component as well as events on campus. Women were encouraged to post on social media about how their sorority has supported their academic pursuits. It was a fun, new event that the community is excited to grow in the coming years.

Service and Philanthropy was a large focus of the community and over the year, the executive council worked to increase opportunities for Panhellenic women to better serve the community as well as gain valuable skills in fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Panhellenic once again partnered with Special Olympics to host the largest women's basketball event in the state of Indiana. The Panhellenic Executive Council serves monthly meals at the local women and children's shelter, Beyond Homeless. The Circle of Sisterhood committee planned a week long effort to raise funds and awareness for women's empowerment worldwide. The most popular event was a trivia night that included trivia based on historical women and women's issues. The Panhellenic Initiation Celebration was reimagined to better fit the values of the Panhellenic community. The executive council, with the assistance of the chapter delegates, planned and executed a community-wide service event. Different groups of newly initiated women went into the community to work on various service projects including baking treats for the humane society and weeding at a local senior community.

In a continued effort to address risk management on campus, the Vice President of Risk Management selected a risk topic for each month. These topics led to the creation of flyers that were shared around campus as well as an event. The topics ranged from domestic violence to drugs and allowed Panhellenic to build partnerships around campus in order to plan purposeful programs.

To better serve the DePauw community, the VP of Member Education position was created on the Executive Council, which encompasses many prevalent issues including diversity and inclusion. The executive council members worked closely with the Day of Dialogue to plan pre-events for the Panhellenic community to prepare women to have conversations around themes of diversity and inclusion. The different Panhellenic chapters were paired with a sister sorority in order to create conversation across chapters. The events were largely attended and aligned with the goals of the University community.

With each academic year, comes the opportunity to recruit new members to our community. Panhellenic has shifted the focus to a more educational and information based fall, while also providing opportunities to meet women and build relationships. Panhellenic members also participated in the CLCD programming and continued to support the Admissions team in their Admitted Student Open Houses. Panhellenic is excited to return to campus in the fall to continue to find new and creative ways to support the women in our community!

Three organizations comprise the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at DePauw University. With two Latina/Multicultural women's and a Latino/Multicultural men's organization, the council aims to unite and serve the needs and wants of culturally diverse Greek-Lettered organizations. Over the 2016-2017 academic year, MGC was led by President Greisy Genao of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Vice President Penelope Ramirez of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. MGC developed a collaborative group during the spring semester to address some internal processes, chapter relationships and address constitutional and by-law changes. Through leadership, communication and fellowship, MGC continued to create a forum which promoted growth, cooperation, and enlightenment for the purpose of serving and educating our community. Greisy Genao, of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. will continue responsibility of serving as President of the Multicultural Greek Council for a second term during the 2017 - 2018 academic year. She will be supported by Vice President Uriah Brown of Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. All of the MGC organizations rely on its unity to collaborate with one another as well as outside

organizations to provide DePauw with meaningful programs and events. In the fall semester, Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority, Inc. welcomed two new members to the Gamma Epsilon Chapter. During spring semester, Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity, Inc. welcomed five new members to the Elegua Chapter.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council at DePauw University is currently comprised of two fraternities and three sororities. The council’s five chapters are part of a nationally-based umbrella organization of historically Black Greek-lettered organizations. Over the 2016 - 2017 academic year, NPHC was led by President Diamond McDonald, of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Vice President Avience Brown, of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Together they worked to create unity amongst the council. The council hosted retreats in order to create an environment where members could get to know each other and share chapter concerns and triumphs. In addition to retreats for council members, NPHC hosted and co-sponsored several events for the entire DePauw community, including the annual “Meet the Greeks” presentation and panel. NPHC partnered with the Panhellenic Council to host a youth Trick-or-Treat festival. Individual organizations also collaborated with IFC and Panhellenic chapters, unifying the DePauw Greek Life experience. NPHC welcomed back for the fourth year to DePauw University, Rasheed Ali Cromwell, Esq.. one of the leading authorities on fraternity and sorority life on college campuses. The discussion with students and members addressed the value of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations and explored current trends and national topics like “Burning Sands.” Successfully, the event had representation from all four councils (NPHC, MGC, Panhellenic, and IFC). During the spring semester, NPHC welcomed several new members to the community. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. returned to campus with two members initiated to the Rho Tau Chapter. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. three members to the Lambda Tau Chapter. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. welcomed four members to the Pi Lambda Chapter. During the 2017 - 2018 academic year NPHC will continue to strive towards continued visibility and unity with leadership from Council President, Christian Rivera of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and LaToya Logan, of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

O rder of Omega is a well-known national honor society for junior and senior members of the Fraternity and Sorority community. The organization was founded in an effort

to bring together extraordinary men and women who have made a difference within their respective Greek chapters, the University, and the community. The Gamma Upsilon Chapter was established at DePauw University in 1981.

One of the purposes of Order of Omega is “to recognize those fraternity men and women who have attained a high standard of leadership in interfraternity activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar conspicuous attainment.” The Gamma Upsilon chapter achieves this purpose through Fraternity and Sorority Awards, held annually in the spring.

This year, we continue to work diligently to support our fraternity and sorority community at DePauw.

This year, we had many conversations about the value of the experience to our students, families,

alumni and campus community.

Several transitions occurred with the Campus Living and Community Development Staff during the

Fall 2016 semester, which provided an opportunity to re-envision the support and advising for our

chapters, both for the short term and immediate and to establish a long term vision. The CLCD Staff

did a national search through NASAP and interviewed over twenty candidates, inviting eight to

campus and selecting two new coordinators that would focus on the Greek-lettered experience.

We welcome Antonio Austin (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.) and Destiny Deaton (Phi Mu Sorority) to

start the 2017 - 2018 academic year. Both are skilled professionals with a wealth of knowledge and

advising experience that will connect with our students, alumni, and advisors. Nick Stepaniak (Alpha

Sigma Phi Fraternity) will return for his third year working with our chapters and councils. JC Lopez

(Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity) will continue to serve as the Director of Campus Living and Community

Development, working with chapters and leaders on community initiatives.

Community Development

For the fourth year Fraternity and Sorority Life was included in the First-Year Orientation schedule. The

Backyard Bash is intended to be a kick-off and welcome for the new students from the Fraternity

and Sorority community. There are a variety of activities, food, and prizes throughout the event.

Chapters and councils send members as representatives to promote the experience and welcome

our newest DePauw students.

Campus Living and Community Development discussed changes to IFC and Panhellenic Council

Recruitment Dates with our chapters for all chapter and council leaders. To support the academic

mission of the institution, it was determined with support from Student Academic Life that moving the

dates would help alleviate academic pressures and interruptions during the first week of the spring

semester. This was a positive adjustment and supported our first-year students schedules in order to

assist them in their transitions to their second semester and into their new membership.

The administration continues to work with our alumni advisors and house corporations. This year

President McCoy and Vice President of Student Academic Life, Alan Hill, participated in many of the

conversations in the fall and spring semester, which demonstrated the commitment and passion for

the Greek-lettered experience at DePauw. Many of the topics covered diversity and inclusion as well

as risk reduction within the community.

On a community level, there have been multiple opportunities for engagement with student leaders.

CLCD administered the EBI for the eighth year collecting student leader and member experiences

feedback to better serve the Greek-lettered community. Results will be reviewed throughout the

summer and will be shared with chapter and council leaders as well as advisory teams once they

are available.

Expansion continues to be of conversation within our community. We welcomed Mu Sigma Upsilon

Sorority, Inc. this spring through Associate Membership with Panhellenic Association. Mu Sigma Upsilon

Sorority, Inc. was founded on November 21, 1981 at Rutgers University New Brunswick, New Jersey.

The seven members initiated into the organization and began the Wujima Chapter, making it the

55th recognized chapter of Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. Their organization founding mother, Lillian

Sierra, came to campus for their New Member Presentation.
