Camp Heatwave is more than a fun day camp - it is a summer program designed to keep your children involved, creatively challenged, physically active and safe during their time off from school. Camp Heatwave will stimulate your child’s curiosity and challenge them to discovery. Camp Heatwave is designed for children in grades K-5. (Children must be at least 5 years old and toilet trained to attend camp).

The following represents a typical day at Camp HEATWAVE. Activities and camp may vary from the schedule.

Water ActivitiesCamp Heatwave will notify parents when water activities are scheduled. Children will swim at City of Austin Pools. Camp Heatwave staff receives Water Safety Training as required by the City of Austin.Swimming

Pick-Up/Drop-Off ProceduresCare starts at 7:30am. Children dropped off at the school prior to 7:30am will not be supervised.Camp activities start at 9:00 am.Pick-up time is 6:00 p.m. Children picked-up after 6:00 p.m. will be assessed a late fee of $1.00/minute.

Be prepared to show your ID when picking up your child. Summer camp workers are trained to ask for ID upon pick-up. If you have requested a person who is not listed on your authorization form to pick your child up, please make sure to inform your camp’s site director when dropping your child off in the morning.

Visiting Your Child at Camp HeatwaveParents may visit the program at any time. Please note that Camp Heatwave staff is responsible for supervision of the children at all times and must limit their conversations with parents. If you would like to have a conference with staff, please schedule a time with the Camp Heatwave site leader.

Children/Adults Not in ProgramIn order to maintain the highest safetyand security for children in and out of Camp Heatwave during program hours, children not enrolled in the programCannot participate in Camp HeatwaveActivities indoor or outdoor at any time.

Positive GuidanceIn order to ensure that Camp Heatwaveis safe and effective, we need thecooperation of all the children, parents& staff. If a discipline problem arises with a child, staff will work to provide positive guidance for that child. If theproblem continues after reasonableattempts to solve it, the child mayultimately be dismissed from the program.Outdoor Play Equipment

Behavior/DisciplineIn general, the following behaviors areexpected of every individual student:

Respecting the property of others, including summer camp materials.

Respecting and following the directions of summer camp staff.

Respecting yourself and other campers.

Instances of physical aggression can lead to immediate termination of summer care.

Meals/SnacksSummer camp will not be providing meals, but will provide a daily, afternoon snack. If you wish, you may send an extra snack with your child for morning snack. Campers are expected to bring their own lunches. Please do not send lunches containing food that needs to be heated, or refrigerated, through use of school appliances. In the event summer camp will provide lunch for a certain day of camp, parents will be notified at the start of the session.

Dress CodeIt is requested that all children wearclose-toed shoes, such as sneakersbecause they will be participating inindoor and outdoor, physical play and field trips.

Personal BelongingsCamp Heatwave is not responsible forpersonal items brought to camp that are lost, stolen, or broken during camp hours. Any belongings left at camp will be kept in a “Lost and Found” area until the conclusion of summer camp.

Immunization RequirementsAll immunization requirements are compliant with standard AISD immunization policy. Records are kept in the school’s main office.

Summer campers will swim twice per week as long as weather permits. Swimming times/locations are subject to change. Parents will be notified of any change to the swimming schedule. All swimming information can be found on site, and will be available during the session. Please send sunscreen along with your child in order to ensure your approval of the SPF rating being used. If you send your child to camp with sunscreen already on, please include a note for the site director to keep on file in the event of sunburn. In all other cases, summer camp staff will administer sunscreen, for every child, prior to swimming. Staff will not be left behind to supervise children that do not participate in swimming.

Field TripsField trip notification will be posted 48 hours before the event. Campers must wear their Camp Heatwave T-shirt. Please arrive 30 minutes before departure time of field trip. Staff will not be available on site to care for campers after the bus departs.Any volunteer, and /or chaperonesattending Camp Heatwave field tripswill be subject to a criminal historycheck conducted by Austin-ISD.

TransportationAny transportation of children in CampHeatwave will be conducted by theAustin-ISD Transportation Department.Our staff completes State Licensing Required transportation training.

Staff QualificationsAll summer camp workers are certified in CPR and First Aid. All summer campstaff are subjected to, and have passed, a criminal history check prior to their start date. All summer camp staff responsible for swimming duty are certified in Community Water Safety in coordination with standards set by the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Aquatics Department.

Camp Heatwave children accessoutdoor play equipment andplayscapes on Austin-ISD campusesthat do not meet State Licensing standards.

AnimalsCamp Heatwave prohibits contactbetween children in care and any animal on campus. In the event achild brings an animal to care, such as a “class pet” the animal must remain in the cage/aquarium throughout theentire day at Camp Heatwave

Attendance/AbsencesAnytime your child will not be attending Camp Heatwave, please contact the staff to inform them that your child will be out for that day. Please note: There are no refunds or credits of tuition for days your child does not attend Camp Heatwave.

Bad Weather PolicyIf bad weather occurs and Campis forced to close, the staff will stayuntil all children are picked-up.

IllnessIf your child becomes ill or gets hurtduring Camp Heatwave, we will make him or her as comfortable as possible and call you. If your child is veryuncomfortable and/or shows signs ofcontagious illness, you must pick up your child as soon as possible.

EmergenciesIn case of an emergency involving yourchild , Camp Heatwave staff will callyou immediately to discuss the matterwith you. If there is an emergency that will cause you to be late in picking up your child, please be sure to call Camp Heatwave staff as soon as possible.

Licensed FacilityAll Camp Heatwave sites are licensedBy the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). All staffMembers are trained in CPR/First AidAnd receive training in Child Care related fields. You may visit the DFPS website at www.dfps.state.tx.us.

Tuberculin TestingAll tuberculin testing requirements are compliant with standard AISD tuberculin testing policy. Records are kept in the school’s main office.

Hearing and Vision ScreeningAll hearing and vision screeningrequirements are compliant with standard AISD hearing and vision screening policies. Records kept in the school’s main office

MedicationsIf your child is taking any medicationwhich must be administered during hisor her time at Camp Heatwave, youmust check in those medications with the Camp Heatwave staff. Children will not be allowed to administer their own medications. Camp Heatwave staff will administer medication to your child.

Parents must complete a form authorizing Heatwave staff to administer the medication. Staff will record each dose of medication administered.Prescription medications must be in the original container, labeled with the child’s name, a date, directions and the physician’s name. Non-prescription medication must be labeled with the child’s name and the date the medication was brought to the center.

Camp Heatwave staff must administerit according to label directions.

Children with Special NeedsIf your child has special needs, please discuss those needs with the staff. Staff will assess those needs and make reasonable efforts to accommodate your child.

Discipline and Guidance Policy for CAMP HEATWAVE AT ______________

(Name of Operation)

Discipline must be: (1) Individualized and consistent for each child; (2) Appropriate to the child’s level of understanding; and (3) Directed toward teaching the child acceptable behavior and self-control.

A caregiver may only use positive methods of discipline and guidance that encourage self-esteem, self-control, and self-direction, which include at least the following: (1) Using praise and encouragement of good behavior instead of focusing only upon unacceptable behavior; (2) Reminding a child of behavior expectations daily by using clear, positive

statements; (3) Redirecting behavior using positive statements; and (4) Using brief supervised separation or time out from the group, when appropriate for the child’s age and development, which is limited to no more than one minute per year of the child’s age.

There must be no harsh, cruel, or unusual treatment of any child. The following types of discipline and guidance are prohibited: (1) Corporal punishment or threats of corporal punishment; (2) Punishment associated with food, naps, or toilet training; (3) Pinching, shaking, or biting a child; (4) Hitting a child with a hand or instrument; (5) Putting anything in or on a child’s mouth; (6) Humiliating, ridiculing, rejecting, or yelling at a child; (7) Subjecting a child to harsh, abusive, or profane language; (8) Placing a child in a locked or dark room, bathroom, or closet with the door

closed; and (9) Requiring a child to remain silent or inactive for inappropriately long periods of time for the child’s age.

Reglamentos de Guía y Disciplina

La disciplina tiene que ser:(1) Personalizada y uniforme para cada niño(2) Adecuada para el nivel de entendimiento del niño (3) Orientada a la enseñanza del niño del comportamiento adecuado y el control de si mismo

Solamente puede utilizar métodos positivos de disciplina y orientación que foméntenla autoestima,el control de si mismo y la conducta independiente, y por lo menos incluyan lo siguiente:

(1) Usar elogios y fomentar el buen comportamiento(2) Recordar a los niños las expectativas de comportamiento diariamente utilizando frases claras y positivas(3) Cambiar el comportamiento utilizando frases positivas(4) Usar un tiempo breve de alejamiento del grupo, bajo supervisión, cuando sea adecuado para la edad y el desarrollo de niño, limitado a no más de un minuto por cada ano de edad del niño.

Ningún niño debe ser tratado de manera severa, cruel o fuera de lo común. Los siguientes tipos de disciplina y orientación están prohibidos:
