They were used for personal transportation (Gen. 24:61), as a beast of burden (Gen. 37:25), and in war (1 Samuel 30:17). The number of camels someone owned was sometimes used as a measurement of personal wealth (Gen. 30:43), and were considered to be a respectful gift (Gen.32:15). However, unlike cattle which were acceptable for food according to the Levitical dietary regulations, camels (along with horses) were not to be eaten (Leviticus 11:4). Jesus Christ sometimes used the camel in parables. To those who saw worldly wealth as more valuable than obeying God, He said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24), and to the hypocritical Pharisees who placed great importance on observing minor religious regulations while at the same time living a life of sin, He said, " Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel!" (Matthew 23:23-24). The camel is often referred to be part of patriarchal wealth. (Gen. 12:16, Gen. 30:43, Job 1:3). It was used for riding (Gen. 24:61), drawing chariots (Is. 21:7), carrying burdens (Gen. 37:25, I Kings 10:2, II Kings 8:9), conveying posts and messengers (Esther 8:10) and for war (Jud. 7:12, I Sam. 30:17) The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples”. CAMELS FORBIDDEN TO BE EATEN In Leviticus 11:4, God forbids the ancient Israelites to eat the camel, because although it chews the cud, it does not have a divided or split hoof. In the verse before (Lev. 11:3) it is clear that a cud- chewing animal could only be eaten if it ‘parteth the hoof, and is cloven footed’. The NIV translates it as one ‘that has a split hoof completely divided’. Camels have an elastic pad at the bottom of their hoof, which helps prevent it from sinking into the sand. This pad means the hoof is not in fact fully divided. This straightforward distinction between the camel’s hoof and that of the cud-chewing animals which were permitted to eat was easily obvious to the Israelites on simple visual inspection. Camels in the Bible Camels are found throughout Bible History, where they were considered very useful and

valuable. They were used for personal transportation (Gen. 24:61), as a beast of burden

(Gen. 37:25), and in war (1 Samuel 30:17). The number of camels someone owned was

sometimes used as a measurement of personal wealth (Gen. 30:43), and were considered to be a respectful

gift (Gen.32:15). However, unlike cattle which were acceptable for food according to the Levitical dietary

regulations, camels (along with horses) were not to be eaten (Leviticus 11:4). Jesus Christ sometimes used

the camel in parables. To those who saw worldly wealth as more valuable than obeying God, He said, "It

is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"

(Matthew 19:24), and to the hypocritical Pharisees who placed great importance on observing minor

religious regulations while at the same time living a life of sin, He said, " Ye blind guides, which strain at a

gnat, and swallow a camel!" (Matthew 23:23-24). The camel is often referred to be part

of patriarchal wealth. (Gen. 12:16, Gen. 30:43, Job 1:3). It was used for riding (Gen.

8:9), conveying posts and messengers (Esther 8:10) and for war (Jud. 7:12, I Sam. 30:17)

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a

large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE.

GOD HAS EQUIPPED US

There is a story about a mother camel and her baby camel in San Diego Zoo.

Baby Camel : Why do we have three big toes in our feet?

Mother : When we walk in the desert sand the big toes will help us not to sink deep into the sand.

Baby Camel : Mom, why do we have long eye lashes?

Mother : When the sand blows in the desert, the long eye lashes will prevent the sand from hurting our eyes. Baby Camel : How about those big humps we have on our back? What are they for?

Mother : Those humps are for storing water so that we can walk long distance in the desert without drinking.

Baby Camel : But, Mom, why are we in San Diego Zoo? God has equipped the camels with these necessary things for journeys in the desert and not sitting around

in a comfortable enclosure for people to look at. In the same way God has equipped every one of his

children with gift for a purpose, to do the job God intends them to do. We are to make disciples and

baptize them and teach them to observe Jesus’ teachings (Matthew 28:19-20). We are to strengthen the

church of Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13).
