THE STUDENT
VOICE
The first Balgowlah Boys Magazine was printed in 1958 and was called “Caloola,” an Aboriginal word meaning “to climb.” It symbolises Bally Boys’ climbing to new heights in all fields of endeavour. “Caloola” is defined in: Endacott, Sydney J., Australian Aboriginal words and place names and their meanings, 9th enlarged ed, Georgian House, Melbourne, 1955.
Our CharterWe respect free speech, and are proud to be the student voice. This respect also acknowledges we will not offend anyone based on religion, race, colour, belief, sex, bad dress sense and occasionally wrong choice in football club.

Sport Report Summer sport has started and good luck to any teams (in or out of school) in their comps. As summer sport continues through the hot weather, please remember sunscreen and sun protection. Australia has the highest incidence of melanoma in the world.
Here are some other facts about melanoma:
•Melanoma is the third most common form of cancer in Australia (10% of all cancers)
•More than 12,500 new cases are diagnosed in Australia every year.
•Melanoma rates have doubled in the last 20 years from 1986-2006.
Music Report The Summer Band Tour has begun with our first trip to Kurmond Primary last Tuesday. The band delighted the kids and made them smile, after a week of bush fires they responded really positively to some music in their lives. And they gave us lunch!!
We’re looking forward to Dec 4, 5 and 6 when we visit local primary schools.

Our Bally Old BoysOran Harden - Bally years 2007-2012 Air Combat Officer ADFA1. What are you studying, and where?I'm doing a Bachelor of Technology in Aviation at ADFA (Australian Defence Force Academy). My job role is to use the weapons, communication and electronic tracking systems in the planes. Think "Goose" from top gun.
2. What are your career aims / ambitions? At the moment my main aim is to get through my training and qualify as an air combat officer. After that I would like to move up the ranks in the Air Force and hopefully become an instructor one day.
3. Did you start aiming towards this whilst at school?Yeah I did. I started the application when I was in year ten, but I have wanted to join the air-force since I was in year eight.
4. What subjects do you recommend for entry to ADFA?Depends what role you want to play, for me maths and physics was most important, but always chose what you enjoy doing.
5. What do you like best about life after school? It's great having more freedom and independence. Getting paid and meeting people from all over Australia is also pretty exciting, however you need to take on more responsibilities and manage more aspects of your life which is tougher. Life in school isn't so bad.
6. Favourite memory of Bally?Probably the year 12 graduation dinner, it was a great time to reflect on how much we had all accomplished throughout our time at Bally. That and holidays spent away with school friends.
7. Favourite teacher at Bally? All of my teachers at Bally were great and supportive. Not sure I could pinpoint an exact favourite though.
8. Last words of advice?Do what you want to do and what you enjoy doing, and you will do well at it.

Nobel Prize in Physics 20138/10/13: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences award the Nobel Prize in Physics to Peter W. Higgs and Francois Englert, for the discovery of the Higgs Particle. In 1964 they independently proposed the theory about how particles acquire mass. Their theories were confirmed by the discovery of the Higgs particle at the CERN laboratory outside Geneva Switzerland this year. 1
Why is this important? This explains how, after the ‘Big Bang,’ particles acquired mass and the planets (aka our universe) was able to form as the solid items we now know. Let Stephen Hawking’s explain the ‘Big Bang’:
2
Then 10-11 seconds after the ‘Big Bang’ the Higgs Particle, also known as the ‘Higgs Boson’ gave particles mass, leading, over time, to the formation of our planets and universe.

Mr Hawkins comments on our definition of the Higgs Boson last month and his views of this great leap in Physics:
Not a bad explanation … (but)… you could add the following … "The Higgs - boson helps to validate the 'standard model' physicists have developed to explain how the universe is put together.”
or, to make it simpler…
“Without the influence of the Higgs field particles would simply whizz around in space at the speed of light rather than clumping together and forming the building blocks of matter.”

Halloween inspired Game Reviews
The title alone sends chills down your spine. Amnesia A Machine For Pigs, just the fact that it's so particular and distinctive in its title. So what's the plot? The year is 1899, and you play as a wealthy businessman called Mandus who wakes up in his mansion suffering amnesia. When he walks around he discovers that his twin children Edwin and Enoch have gone missing and you (he) must look for them. As you venture forward, you get mysterious calls by some evil guy telling you that if you start 'The Machine' you will get your children back. Journey into the sequel to Amnesia The Dark Descent as this spine tingling tale takes you on a horror experience you'll never forget. In my opinion, this is not as scary as its predecessor but, it makes up for that with an amazing story and compelling characters. This game is definitely worth your time, and your money!Release date: September 2013Genre: Survival HorrorMode: Single PlayerCost: US$20 through Steam or many others. See www.aamfp.com Our rating:
Movie Reviews
Movie Review:NOW YOU SEE ME is a visually interesting story about a group of four magicians who uncover the plans to the most spectacular heist of their lives. Even though the story does feel a bit flimsy at the beginning, slowly and quickly you soon get immersed in the atmosphere it sets up. It's not the best depiction of magicians, and has one of the worst endings I have ever seen in my life; yet it is still a very strong movie both visually AND in the development of the storyline.Release date: 2013Movie Budget: US$75 millionGenre: Caper (sub-genre of Crime fiction) Thriller FilmAvailable: Still at the CinemasOur rating:
Movie Review:THE ADDAMS FAMILY MOVIEJust like the Brady Bunch Movie, this movie takes the approach of self parody: they constantly make fun of the source material yet all the while making a faithful adaptation. The story develops as a women is trying to steal a fortune by dressing her son up like the family's long lost Uncle Fester. Soon they find out that he was the real Uncle Fester and he just had Amnesia the whole time... Just go with it. The movie is a hilarious fun-bag of comedy, drama, action and adventure.Release date: 1991Movie Budget: US$38 millionGenre: ComedyAvailable: DVD or Apple TV Our rating:
S y n o p s i s o f o u r t r i pSixteen very lucky Bally boys caught a plane for 24 hours, got off, and were immediately introduced to Paris by an extremely knowledgable Tour Guide (Cesil). These 16 boys woke up at the crack of dawn every morning and then collapsed into bed for a well earned sleep aHer each day of exploraIon. One aHernoon, whilst on the top floor of the Eifel Tower, a certain teacher and student (who shall remain nameless, however I can tell you one is wriIng this and the other teaches music) freaked out from the the height. Another teacher (who shall also remain nameless, however he isn’t a music teacher) was always last out of bed and managed to hold up the whole bus in the morning before every tour. Several sights were visited, many graveyards, churches, and war grounds, all of which had a huge impact on each boy. AHer a long tour, 16 lucky, Ired, half asleep, couldn't be bothered to go through custom’s, hoping security wouldn’t pickup their stash, boys caught a plane for 24 hours to Sydney to crying parents, liQle siblings, but most importantly, warm beds.A BIG Thanks to Mr Ropa and Mr G for helping us to learn the maximum amount that we could in the Ime we had.For more images visit hQps://www.facebook.com/balgowlahboys
