The first Balgowlah Boys Magazine was printed in 1958 and was called “Caloola,” an Aboriginal word meaning “to climb.” It symbolises Bally Boys’ climbing to new heights in all fields of endeavour. “Caloola” is defined in: Endacott, Sydney J., Australian Aboriginal words and place names and their meanings, 9th enlarged ed, Georgian House, Melbourne, 1955.

Music ReportIn the past few weeks at Bally, there hasn’t been any major musical events apart from preparation for the highly anticipated MAD.All music classes from years 7&8 have been learning the repertoire pieces for the big show with the help of our year 9&10 elective music classes. All the teachers at the Faculty of Arts are working tirelessly to bring the performance together in the few short weeks left before it’s on! So make sure you bring in your $25 participation fee and collect you song book from Mr. Ropa, Mr. Shanal, Ms. Leviton & Ms. McDonald.

Book Review

A thought provoking book about several animals taking control of their owners farm and trying to run it, but eventually becoming just like the humans that they fought against. Orwell wrote the book as an allegory of the Russian Revolution to voice his disillusionment with how the communist ideals were betrayed by Stalin and Leroy Jenkins.

1. Why did you become a teacher?

I wanted to do something in the sports industry but I did teaching at uni and really liked it.

2. What’s your funniest memory (so far) at Bally?

Last year at Bally two funny things happened:

First, I saw Adison fall off the stage (it was very funny!!!)

and second, when I was bowled over in the staff vs student game.

Floor BallSydney, 5th August, 2013 - The Northern Beaches Junior Floorball team have just returned from their first Australian Championship, held in Wollongong. The team surprised not only their supporters, parents and friends, but also themselves by finishing 5th overall!

One of the new floorball stars is Balgolwah Boys very own Dylan Jones, who started playing the exciting sport just over 9 months ago. He urges everyone to come and give it a go. ‘It’s kind of like hockey, but much faster, easy to learn and so much fun’ he says. With the success still fresh in Dylan’s mind the focus has already switched to an even more successful campaign at the 2014 championships, which will be held next July in Perth. ‘It’s awesome to play in a national tournament with your mates, alongside the elite players who play for Australia at the World Cup level’, he continues. Floorball is one of the fastest growing global sports and has recently gained IOC approval. Dylan hopes that by the time he plays in the senior team it will be featured in the Olympic Games and who knows Dylan might be the next Northern Beaches Olympian!
