Input Strategy
The physical system is represented by the assembly of
simple “stick” elements / 3D Beams
Two node numbers identify the ends of each element
Enter one piping element per spreadsheet
 Add boundary conditions of loads

Building and Using Load Case
CAESAR II recommends loads cases for new jobs.
The recommended load cases are usually sufficient to
satisfy the Piping Code requirements for the
Sustained/primary and Expansion/secondary loads
CAESAR II keeps the load cases from the last analysis.
CAESAR II does not “recommend” occasional load sets.

Building and Using Load Cases
 Primitive Components (left): Weight/Temp/Pressure/Hanger loads/etc
Basic Load Cases: combine primitive components/loads
Combinational Load Cases: combining the basic load cases
Order: all basic load cases MUST BE defined BEFORE any combinations.

Building Load Cases
Load cases usually serve three purposes in a CAESAR II
analysis
– Develop code-defined stresses
– Examine structural response at various states (e.g.
installed and operating condition)
– Collect data to size spring hangers

Many reports available – which do you need?
 Input Echo (describes the system)
 Miscellaneous Report (intermediate calcs)
Load Case Report (what options chosen)
 Hanger Report
Displacements: OPE (interference) + SUS (weight sag)
Restraints (or Summary): OPE (hot loads) + SUS (installed loads)
Stresses (or Code Compliance): SUS (most codes) + EXP (most
codes) + OCC (if present) + OPE (some codes)
