What is Dunjia?

Qi Men Dun Jia (or Qimendunjia) is one of the three most powerful oracles­­Tai Yee, Liu Ren and QiMen­­­to know both good luck and bad luck in aspects of time and space(direction). Tai Yee is usedto divine the big events that happen with contries, such as earthquake, big hurricanes, massacre,natural disasters, etc. Qi Men is generally used for military action and take what strategic methodsin ever­changing battle field. Liu Ren is mostly used for divining the general daily events whichmeans it is close to our daily life.

Qi means mysterious or strange in usual, but here, it means valuable or holy. Men means a gate,and Dun means hidden or escaped (to make hidden), and Jia is the first one of ten stems, which isconsidered as the most sacred in this method.

All the three oracles use very special chart to divine and give conclusion. Yes, all of them cannot dowithout Heavenly stems, earthly branches, Ho drawing, Luo Drawing, Eight Trigrams, Emblematicelements and divine number, etc.

Dunjia can be divided into Year School Dunjia, Month School Dunjia, Day School Dunjia and TimeSchool Dunjia in terms of the time. In terms of reasoning methods it should be divided into Line­UpPalace Dunjia and Jump­in­Palace Dunjia.

Here we introduce Time School Dunjia, Line­Up Palace Dunjia.

People may ask when the Dunjia came into presence and why it existed. Nowadays many peoplebelieve Dunjia originated from milatary force arrangements in the battle field and such statementsgained wide approval in the scholar circle.

In the very old book The Song from Old Fishing Man carried the following story:

XuanYuan Emperor fought a fierce battle with Shi You without results for many years. In a dream hedreamed Heaven gave him an oracle and XuanYuan paid respect in a sacrifice platform andpracticed such arts latter and got a final success soon after. He ordered maliatary man Feng Hou towrite down the arts in words and that was the beginning of Dunjia.

Also, it was Spring and Warring Times when the so many states fought endless battles to occupyterritory and there was enough demand for application of such arts.

Also the book Arts of War carried similar words concerning the theory of Dunjia. Yet, most peopledon't understand the meaning exactly till now.

In Three­Dynasty Times the famous military counsellor Zhu Ge Liang applied Eight TrigramArrangement in the battle field and won many times of success.

In Dun Jia(or Dunjia) theory, we use a kind of direction chart called Pan, which is drawed as asquare divided into nine blocks( 3 x 3. eight directions and centre ). In each directional block, one ofthe eight gates is positioned. We put away Jia(because of its holiness) and use other nine stems toput them into Dun Jia Pan chart at first, and after several process of making, Jia comes into the Panchart from one of the eight gates. And that's why this method is called Qi Men Dun Jia.

Later due to the wide application of Dunjia this divination approach gradually broke its ownboundary and gained application in disease diagnosis, business desicion, agricultural divination, etc.

Why Dunjia be Used for Divination?

Any divination approaches, whatever forms they assume, are models set up to imitate the socialsociety, the nature and the universe, etc. Dunjia is a mathematic and physical model set up byincorporating heaven aspect, earth aspect, human aspect and unexpected aspect, the time elementsand space elements. There are basic nine Yang Dun Ju and nine Yin Dun Ju which provide us adynamic unified model to imitate all transformations and changes for universal things. Therefore itcan be used to divine the society, nature, individual life time or all which stays out of human'sreasoning ability. By calculation we know there are altogether 216,000 Jus and ancient Chinesepeople hope that 216,000 Jus can imitate most part of situation in this practical world.

This is one of the most typical characteristics of Dunjia. In ancient age, those who won using Dunjiatried to keep it as top­secret, and suppressed Dunjia­masters to prevent from Dunjia­secret leakingto the enemies of the governors.

Many Dunjia­masters were arrested, but they'd never made the secret of Dunjia clear.

Basic Background

1. Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams1­1. Hevenly Stems

Most people are familair with Heavenly Stems, there are Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Renand Gui. For Western people, they may feel difficult to understand the meaning and rememberthem. In fact, ten Heavenly Stems have close connection with the movements of sun. It was heardthat Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches were created by Da Nao, a very mysterious figure inancient China.The following lists the general meaning of ten Heavenly Stems:

1. Jia: Bud ­ the sign of growth2. Yi: Sprout ­ the spread of growth, bursting forth from Earth3. Bing: Concentrated growth like fire in the house4. Ding: Maturity, solidity, Heavens kiss.5. Wu; Flourishing and nuturing6. Ji: Full bloom7. Geng: Harvesting and abundance. Fullness leading to changes8. Xin: Dead heading, reformation9. Ren: Sustenance, supporting life10. Gui: Regenerating roots and preparation for spring

1­4. The application of ten Heavenly Stems in DunjiaBesides the time meaning represented by the ten Heavenly Stems, each Heavenly Stem has hiddenmeaning which denotes the personalized military force. Jia denotes the general who often hides inthe military force arrangements. Just on account of this it is called Dunjia­­Dun means hidden inChinese, Jia indicates the first Heavenly Stem Jia. Yi, Bing and Ding are often called Three Wonders.In fact, they are three important assistant commanders close to the general. In modern militaryframework, they are similiar to the headquater, political department and logistic department.Sometimes we can understand them as the following below: Yi is the idea man, Bing is thegeneral's bodyguard, and Ding is the logistic officer.

Sometimes we can regard the three as the arm forces often appearing suddenly.

Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren and Gui are six detachments (We call Liu Yi), each holding up flag ofdifferent color. Wu, earth element, yang, holds up a just­yellow flag Ji, earth element, yin, holds up a deputy­yellow flag Geng, metal element, yang, holds up a just­white flagXin, metal element, yin, holds up a deputy­white flagRen, water element, yang, holds up a just­black flagGui, water element, yin, holds up a deputy­black flag.

In them the Jia­Zi is the general, theother five are commenders. The six military officers should hide themselves each under a differentflag and they should not change anyway. For the easy memory, we often recite them as: 9 up on the head and 1 down under my feet, left 3and right 7, 4 and 2 on my shoulder, 8 and 6 are my feet. Correspondingly, the congenital EightTrigrams occupy diferent palaces.

1­6. San Qi

San Qi means three high­valued wonderful commanders or enforcements and consists of (sun

wonder), (Moon wonder) and (star wonder).

2­1. The Arrangement of San Qi and Liu Yi in Nine Palaces

San Qi and Liu Yi, nine in total, will fall into nine palaces in a succession. They are , ,

, , each has one Jia general or one of five Jia commanders hiding under it­­ they areJia­Zi, Jia­Xu, Jia­Shen, Jia­Wu, Jia Chen and Jia­Yin. When Jia­Zi falls into one palace (for example,No. 4 palace) in a Yang Dun Ju, we call it is a No. 4 Yang Du Ju.

2­2. Ju

Ju means situation. In Dunjia method, there are cyclic numbers on year, month, day and hour ofDunjia calendar. For example, Ju number of the date February 2, 1996 is 9, Yang Dun Ju. It means

falls in the No. 9 palace.To know one day is Yang Dun Ju or Yin Dun Ju and the Ju

number people can look for the Dunjia calender. That is very important.

2­3. Yin Dun and Yang Dun

There are two ways of heavenly Qi's moving, Yin Dun and Yang Dun. Both are concerned withmoving of Earth around the sun.

Yin Dun is a period from summer solstice to next winter solstice. When during the YinDun period, Yin energy is born and increasing its power day by day.Yang Dun is a period from winter solstice to next summer solstice. During the YangDun period, Yang energy is increasing.

This circulation of energy concerned with time can be comprehend as revolution of earth likefollowing:

Ju Shu ( situation numbers ) consists of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. It goes descendantly under YinDun period, and ascendantly under Yang Dun period like following:

2 ­ 5. Heavenly DiskThe aboved knowledge talked about the Earthly Disk and how to arrange the Liu Yi and ThreeWonders in nine palaces and that is not enough. In ancient China, people held all things have toaccept influence from heaven, earth and artificial aspect. Heavenly Disk represents the influencecoming from above. There are altogether nine stars, each stands for a different influence, here wecall them as Zhi Fu . Please read the following chart:

The following gives the explanation as to nine stars:

1. Tian Peng ( ): water element, corresponding to Kan trigram, has close connection to theappearace of theft. So, it is an inauspicious star. When Tian Peng falls in one palace, peopleshould construct dam, or defence facilities or strengthen the stronghold in order to preventsomething happening. It is not good to travel far or do business because the theft may happen.

2. Tian Rui ( ): earth element, Yin, has close connection with epidemic. So, sometimes wecall it as a disease star. When Tian Rui stays in one palace, people should receive teachings oradmonishment, make friends, stay in the original place, abstain from arm force deployment, nomarriage, no quarrel, no travel far, no new construction, etc.

3. Tian Cong ( ): wood element, yang, has close connection with kind donation, doing kinddeeds, or agricultural activities. It is an auspicious star. When Tian Cong dwells in one palace,it is good for military action, battle or fights. Beside these all is inauspicious.

4. Tian Fu ( ): wood element, yang, has close connection with cultrual education. It is avery ausoicious star. Whe Tian Fu dwells in one palace, it is auspicious for travel, business,marriage, construction, especially study progress, social status ascendence and culture andeducation development.

5. Tian Qin ( ): earth element, yang, auspicious for all things because it dwells in thecentral earth palace which can gives rise to all.

6. Tian Xin ( ): metal element, yin, has close connection with leadership capability,scheming, desease treatment and military deployment. t is an auspicious star.

7. Tian Zhu ( ): metal element, yin, has close connection with killings, strange things,mysterious matters, damage. It is an inauspicious star. When Tian Zhu falls in one palace,people should strengthen their garrison, train their forces, prepare for the bad. It is not goodfor travel far, do business, otherwise loss, injury, unfortunate things will happen.

8. Tian Ren ( ): earth element, yang, an auspicious star. When Tian Ren dwells in onepalace, it is good for offering teaching to general people, pacificate people, crack down uponinsurgence or mobsters. Also good for business, marriage, social status.

9. Tian Ying ( ): fire element, yin, has close connection with outragous behavior, heatedsituation, fire and blood. It is a neutral star. When Tian Ying dwells in one palace it is good forplaning, dropping a visit to high officials, but it is bad if people want fortune, social statuspossession, marriage or travel.

2­6. Human DiskHuman disk means the eight Gates which summarize all possible influence from human beings.

northeast To generate energy for action of the day. It is an agent of Gen­Trigram,and also represents Chou­branch and Yin­branch. Generally speaking,This gate is useful for any purpose, especially for health.

east To be injured or scratch something easily by mistake, because of hurry tothe work or remainder of yesterday's tiredness. It is an agent of Zhen­Trigram, and also represents Mao­Branch. This gate is useful forhospitalization with operations.

southeast Start working of the day, but not smoothly done for complete. It is anagent of Sun­Trigram, and also represents Chen­branch and Si­branch.This gate is not useful for any purposes. This gate is only useful forrunning away, or arresting robbers.

south The most active time in a day. It is an agent of Li, and also representsWu­branch. This gate is useful for any purposes.

southwestSleepy for satisfaction from eating. It is an agent of Kun­Trigram, andalso represents Wei­branch and Shen­branch. This gate should not beused except burial.

west It's nearly the time to finish the work. As concentrations get declined,people are easily surprised at unexpected happenings. It is an agent ofDui­Trigram, and also represents You­branch. This gate is not useful forany purposes.

northwestReturn home after work of the day. It's time to go to bed. It is an agentof Chain­Trigram, and also represents Xu­branch and Hai­branch. Thisgate is useful for any purposes. Kai denotes all things are prosperous,metal elements,

There are altogether 8 Guards used in Dunjia, which summarize the possible influence frommysterious aspect or celestial powers. We call them Zhi Shi . In Yang Dun Ju the eight

Guards will line up in the following sequance::

The eight Guards will line up in the following sequence in Yin Dun Ju:

The following gives the explanation as to each of the Guard:

1. Zhi Fu (): earth element, central position, the commander of all other Guards. When it falls inone palace, all evil things will flee without any trace.

2. Teng She (): fire element, south, hypocratic and crafty Guard. Stands for hypocratic characters,acrimony speech. Responsible for strange, hypocratic and dreadful things.

3. Tai Yin (): metal element, west, the sheltering Guard. Of obscure and invisible attributes.Where Tai Yin comes upon it is suitable for planning, scheming, plotting, etc. and for takingshelter and hide the military forces.

4. Liu He (): wood element, east, the protection Guard. Its character is unclouded and amiable.Where it falls upon it is suitable for marriage arrangement, discussing business, negotiation,etc.

5. Bai Hu (): metal element, west, atrocious Guard. Apt to killing in most of situation, Responsiblefor arm forces deployment, killings, epidemics, traffic accidents. Under it there hids Gou Chen.

6. Xuan Wu ():water element, north, crafty sycophant or thief. Prefer to stealing and clandestinelove affairs. Responsible for thieft, going into exile, quarrel. Under it there hides the Zhu Que.

7. Jiu Di (): earth element, central position, the common mother of all things. Its charater is tame,quiet, pliable. Where it comes upon it is suitable for planting, dwelling, stationing arm forces.

8. Jiu Tian (): metal element, positioned high up as like the heaven. Valiant Guard. Very strongcharacter and prefer to taking action. Where it comes upon it is suitable for deploying armforces, battle, travel.

PART THREE

3 ­ 1. How to Set Up One Ju?On August 20, 2000 one person dropped a visit. The time is 4:10PM.

A. The First Step:

People should learn such basic methods used for finding the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch andthat is very important for the Dunjia divination. Here people should look for a Chinese lunar calender

to find the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of August 20, 2000. The result is: Xin­Si ( )

year, Bing­Shen ( ) month, Yi­Mou ( ) day.

Then we should get to know the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the time 4:10PM. It is Jia­

Shen ( ) .

So, we get the result of Xin­Si ( ) year, Bing­Shen ( ) month, Yi­Mou (

) and Jia­Shen ( ) time.

.The Second Step:By looking over the twenty­four solar terms we know it is the term of Beginning of Autumn.Beginning of Autumn is divided into three durations: upper period, middle period and lower period,each lasting 5 days. August 20, 2000 is within the middle period and the beginning mark of the

middle period is August 19, 2000, it is Jia­Yin ( ) day. For all the three periods, weshould use 2,5 and 8 Ju, Yin Dun. Accordingly we know August 20, 2000 is number 5 Yin Dun Ju.

C. The Third Step:

Now we should proceed to arrange San Qi and Liu Yi in the nine palaces. Yin Dun Ju we shouldchoose the number sequence of 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 when we arrange San Qi and Liu Yi. Because it is

number 5 Yin Dun Ju we should first place Jia­Zi ( ), the general, in the number 5 palace.

Jia­Zi is hiding under Wu detachment, therefore we just write down Wu ( ) in the number 5

palace. Then Ji ( ) in number 4 palace, Geng ( ) in number 3 palace, Xin ( ) in

number 2 palace, Ren ( ) in number 1 palace, Gui ( ) in number 9 palace, Ding ( )

in number 8 palace, Bing ( ) in number 7 palace, Yi ( ) in number 6 palace. Please seethe following figure which shows the Earthly Disk.

D. The Fourth Step

We should learn how to find the Zhi Fu ( ) and Zhi Shi ( ), then arrange allHeavenly stars and eight Gates in the nine palace. It is Jia­Shen time. Jian Shen itself is the beginning time for one time period and so we don't need towaste any time. The beginning time of Jia­Shen hides under Geng detachment in number 3 palace.Corresponding to number 3 it is nothing but Tian­Chong ( ) Star which is the Zhi Fu (

). Corresponding to number 3 it is Injury Gate ( ) which is the Zhi Shi ( ) .

E. The Fifth Step

Now we should arrange Heavenly stars in their regular sequence: Tian­Peng ( ), Tian­Ren (), Tian­ Chong ( ), Tian­Fu ( ), Tian­Ying ( ), Tian­ Rui ( ) and

Tian­Qin ( )­­they are always together­­Tian­Zhu ( ), Tian­Xin ( ) . Theyalways line up in a clockwise sequence. Because it is Jia­Shen time which hides under the Liu Yi

Geng ( ) we should bring Geng with Tian­Chong ( ). Please see the figure which showhow the Heavenly Stars arrange.

F. The Sixth StepNow we should learn how to arrange eight Gates in nine palaces.

We know the Zhi­Fu ( ) is Injury Gate ( ) who dwells in number 3 palace. The

regular sequence of eight Gates is as follows: Xiu ( ), Sheng ( ), Shang ( ), Du

( ), Jing ( ), Shi ( ), Jing ( ), Kai ( ). Then please see the followingfigure:

G: The Seventh Step

This step we should arrange eight Guards in nine palaces. Here we should know Zhi­Shi ( )

always follow the Zhi­Fu ( ) to find its starting point, then line up the regular sequence

clockwise in Yang Dun Ju and counterclockwise in Yin Dun Ju. Zhi­Fu ( ) is Injury Gate (

number 3 palace, it is Zhi­Fu ( ). Because it is a Yin Dun Ju we should line up eight Guards

counterclockwise as follows: Zhi­Fu ( ), Teng­She( ), Tai­Yin ( ), Liu He (

), Bai­Hu ( ), Xuan­Wu ( ), Jiu­di ( ), Jiu­tian ( ). Pleasesee the arrangement results in the following figure:

Till now we finish setting up one Ju based upon the time, day, month and year when the peoplecome upon for one time of divination. Yes, there are other variety of Ju settings but here wegenerally adopt the most popular time­school Dunjia. Then people should learn how to analyze suchJu. PART FOUR 4 ­ 1. How to Analyze One Ju. People should know the emblematic meaning of each sign used in one Ju and their interactionresults. In one palace there stay Earthly disk, Heavenly disk, Human disk and eight Guards whichsummarize the possible influence that can have effects upon one situation. In ancient China, peoplehold the viewpoints that human beings are one part of the nature without any division. It is acomplete entity. They also hold that the whole nature has its own pulse that beat continuously aslike a human being. Ancient Chinese doctore can know the problem hidden in the body by feeling thepulse. Yet, how to feel the pulse of the nuture? And is it possible to do that?

Dunjia methods provide one tool for feeling the pulse of the nuture and from it some people canknow something hidden in it. In fact, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches provide the verybasic foundation for this to become true. The pulse of nature can show up with assortedpresentation forms when tainted with different color and that is why Dunjia can offer so much usefultips when people want to know so many different things.

So, for the proper analysis of one Ju we have to know the meaning of each element staying in thenine palaces.
