1.1 Application in Contemporary World

Qi Men Dun Jia has been historically recognized as an ancient art of war. A great

Chinese military strategist named Zhuge Liang used it to help him win battles in the

ancient times. He excelled in deciphering the best timing and direction to send his

soldiers to attack the enemy. The legacy left behind by this effective comprehensive

metaphysical model not only accounts for universal time dimension but it also covers

the spatial arrangement of energies.

In contemporary society, the application of Qi Men Dun Jia has evolved from mere

military use to a wide array of day-to-day business activities and domestic functions.

According to some ancient documentation, Qi Men Dun Jia had been used as an

unorthodox means to assist people to commit murder and rape. Nevertheless, using

this divine art for unethical acts or to commit crime will only attract bad karma. This is

something that ethical knowledge seekers in search of authentic traditional systems

today must remember and uphold the legacy of assisting others for the greater good

of Man. So, let us now focus on how to use Qi Men Dun Jia to create positive luck for

ourselves, our loved ones and our friends so that we can succeed in our endeavors.

In the next section, before we dive further into the fundamentals, let us see how Qi

Men Dun Jia is generally applied.

1.2 What is Qi Men?

"Qi" and "Men"

The word “Qi” (奇) in Qi Men Dun Jia is different from the word “qi” (气) or energy that

we often refer to in Feng Shui, another Chinese metaphysical study. "Qi" connotes

oddity or strangeness and "Men" refers to "Door" in Chinese but to put things in context,

"Men" (门) actually implies a specific type of energy including a direction.

8 Types of "Men"

There are altogether 8 different types of Men or directions based on the arrangement

of Later Heaven Trigrams. Qi in fact refers to the 3 auspicious heavenly stems namely,

Yi wood (乙)

Bing fire (丙)

Ding fire (丁)

During its application, we would like to observe in which sector or direction the correct

pairing of Qi and Men present themselves. The pairing of auspicious Qi and Men is to

leverage on carrying out a task or embarking on a mission to help us to achieve a very

favourable outcome. Besides the Qi and Men, there are also other considering factors

or components within a Qi Men Dun Jia chart such as:

the quality of the 9 Stars

the auspiciousness of the 8 Deities

the annual Purple White Stars.

The subsequent chapters will elaborate further on the functions and attributes of all

such components in the natal chart.

2.1 Various Qi Men Dun Jia Chart Systems

In this course, we are going to first introduce to you and begin our teaching based on

the Yearly Qi Men Chart System since it is less complicated for a beginner to grasp

the theory. In the very near future, we will be launching and sharing with you the other

types of Qi Men Chart Systems namely, Monthly Qi Men, Daily Qi Men and Hourly Qi

Men Charts in separate online courses.

The difference between these Qi Men charts is largely attributed to the way the chart

is plotted as well as its objective. The seldom-taught Yearly Qi Men system, in terms

of application, had been used during ancient time to forecast what was going to

generally happen to the country during a particular year. However, over the years with

the advent of better technologies and more precise instrument to observe the

movement of the planets and constellation, a specialized field of study known as

Mundane Astrology is deemed more superior and accurate in predicting climate,

economic and socio-political events of the country and the world. Hence, the use of Qi

Men Dun Jia for forecasting the short-term luck of the country has become less popular.

Today, it is more interesting to use this system to find out where are the auspicious or

inauspicious sectors at home during certain year so that, for example, you can avoid

putting a water fountain in the sector that carries inauspicious Qi Men energy. Besides,

you will learn that the Yearly Qi Men chart, coupled with the concepts of BaZi’s Shen

Sha (神煞), can be used relatively easily to forecast the outlook of a person’s luck in

that year. This is the focus of this course.

As for the Monthly Qi Men Chart, its role is to further break down the yearly energy

into 12 parts to zoom into what is going to happen to the country on a monthly basis

in terms of climate or socio-political events. In the past, when traveling on ship could

take weeks or months, one could rely on the use of Monthly Qi Men Chart to decide

which month to start their journey so that the travel route is blessed with positive

energies. The same ideas apply for Daily and Hourly Qi Men Charts but as the

application time frame gets narrower, the more sophisticated Qi Men Dun Jia gets in

terms of its use in the modern world. We shall discuss this in our subsequent courses.

Qi Men Dun Jia has always been regarded as an advance Chinese metaphysics

subject since, as a pre-requisite, students are required to be equipped with strong

fundamentals of BaZi and study of Trigrams. Let me now go straight to the subject

proper to discuss more in depth about the important fundamentals.

3.1 Earth Stem Plate (地盘干排法)

To plot the Yearly Qi Men Dun Jia chart, we first begin with the Earth stems.

Making reference to the table above, we first locate the start point to insert Wu (戊).

For 2016, since it is Yin 2 Ju, the start point will be at Southwest Kun palace as shown

in the below diagram. If it is Yin 1 Ju, Wu (戊) will be inserted in North palace. You can

refer to the Luo Shu Numerology in page 14 on the arrangement of numbers and their

corresponding palaces.

Once we have inserted Wu (戊) in Kun palace, we then place the remaining stems in

accordance to Yin Dun sequence as shown below.

Once all the Earth stems are placed in the respective palaces, it will look like the chart

below. This will give you the complete Earth Stem Plate.

4.1 What is Auxiliary Stars?

The origin of Shen Sha or Auxiliary Stars system can be dated back to as far as Han

Dynasty in the 206 BCE. It was purported that the Han Chinese had developed this

very ancient form of fortune telling system based on the constellations and Taoist

deities. One of its primeval applications is to use a person’s birth Year Pillar (either the

heavenly stem or earthly branch) to check against the annual luck pillar to determine

what Shen or Sha will be encountered by the person in certain year. Shen refers to

god and deities who are auspicious in nature and Sha usually implies negative evils

that will cause harm and misfortune. The study of Shen Sha has also formed an

integral part in the study of BaZi today.

In Yearly Qi Men Chart system, we will examine the types and meanings of Shen Sha

relevant to the Yearly Qi Men Dun Jia analysis.
