WORLD WAR 1 In the second decade of the twentieth

century, a terrible war began in Europe, with the death toll eventually totaling an estimated 8 million combatants—and many times more civilians. At first the United States vowed to maintain its neutrality. However, the nation finally declared war in order to support its allies and defend its commercial interests.

WORLD WAR 1How was World War 1 different from previous wars? It was marked by a major advancement

in weapons without a similar achievement in mobility.

They had new guns, mounted machine gun. Technologically advanced. And the First war to use: tanks, submarines, aero planes, gas, battleships.

WILSON’S 14 POINTS The Fourteen Points was a speech given by

United States President Woodrow Wilson to a joint session of Congress on January 8, 1918. The address was intended to assure the country that the Great War was being fought for a moral cause and for postwar peace in Europe.

The speech was delivered 10 months before the Armistice with Germany and became the basis for the terms of the German surrender, as negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. The Treaty of Versailles had little to do with the Fourteen Points and was never ratified by the U.S. Senate.

THE ROARING TWENTIES

Coming out of World War I, Americans were focused on returning to normal life and improving the nation's economy. Through three one-term presidencies, the country saw an economic boom, labor troubles, and the seeds of an economic disaster that loomed as the decade ended.

THE ROARING TWENTIES American society changed in many ways

following World War I, as the jazz age introduced a variety of new styles, tastes, and manners. Conflict arose between Americans ready to adopt these new manners and new ways and Americans who tried to resist the forces of change.
