Initial DrawingThis is the initial pencil drawing. It was based on a digital photo I shot while wandering around Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cerulean BlueDespite being a hot, sunny day, the scene had a lot of cool colors in it. Here is the drawing after adding some Cerulean Blue.

Gray and BlueNext, a little Payne's Gray and Delft Blue were added for contrast and depth.1 |2This work was completed using my twelve-color Schmincke Horadam palette:

Warm ColorsThe building in the background (the Harley-Davidsion Cafe) got a touch of Permanentrot and Ruby Red. The utility pole on the right received an initial coat of Gamboge Gum Modern.

More LayersThe entire scene was worked with various colors to help bring out detail; for example Titanium Gold Ochre was added to the utility pole.

Wrapping UpVarious details were added or accentuated by piling on additional layers of warm colors (Translucent Brown, Vanadium Yellow, etc.).Here's the completed painting, which I callDecisions, Decisions.

Here's the photo!Isn't the huge smirk on her face fun!Winsor & Newton removable masking fluid.

I added some pinks in the costume and a great big pink bow in the hair.Viridian makes a great subtle shadow for pink.

This commission required two fishing boats, 'Delta Dawn' and 'Harvester', moored by the Arun View Hotel in Littlehampton. Several photographs were taken to record the detail of the two boats and the background. Then some preliminary thumbnail sketches were made to decide on the composition and very importantly, what to leave out! A lot of the background detail has to be removed to avoid an over cluttered picture.Picture 1,Detail from the initial freehand drawing also showing the first sky wash:

Picture 2,More washes applied......

Picture 3,More work in the middle distance, ignoring the foreground.

Picture 4,The detail is now added in the foreground, including the boats, but not the water.

Picture 5,The finished painting, complete with washline mount and distressed gilt frame.
