What is Network ?

A network is a group of interconnected nodes(computers).

 The purpose of creating a network is sharing resources and dataamongst nodes connected to a network.

Internet is the largest network known today and is also called‘network of networks’.

Network is broadly classified into:

1.Personal Area Network(PAN)

2.Local Area Network(LAN)3.Metropolitan Area Network(MAN)4.Wide Area Network(WAN)

A wired network is one where each computer is connected tothe network through a cable.

 These cables typically look like a slightly fatter than normaltelephone cable.

Wired networks have somedisadvantages :

Running the wires from room to room can be difficult thismakes the network cables look messy.

Network cables can come loose and cause the connection to

failAdding more computers to a wired network might result inunexpected expense if you run out of connections on yournetwork.

Introduction to Wi-Fi :

A wireless network uses radio waves, just like cell phones,televisions and radios do.

In fact, communication across a wireless network is a lot liketwo-way radio communication.

Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is the example of such network.

Wi-Fi is a wireless technology brand owned by the Wi-FiAlliance.Wireless LAN products are based on the IEEE 802.11standards.

Common applications for Wi-Fi include Internet and VoIPphone access, gaming, and network connectivity for consumerelectronicssuch as televisions, DVD players, and digital cameras.

Uses of Wi-Fi:

A Wi-Fi enabled device can connect to the Internet whenwithin range of a wireless network connected to the

Wi-Fi availability in the home is on the increase. This extension of the Internet into the home space willincreasingly be used for remote monitoring.Examples of remote monitoring include security systems .In all these kinds of implementation, if the Wi-Fi provision is providedusing a system running one operating system, then it becomes

unfeasible due to weight, power consumption and cost issues.

Increasingly in the last few years embedded Wi-Fi modules havebecome available which come with a real-time operating system andprovide a simple means of wireless enabling any device which hasand communicates via a serial port.

 This allows simple monitoring devices – for example, a portable ECGmonitor hooked up to a patient in their home – to be created. Thedata collected can hop via the home's Wi-Fi access point to anywhereon the internet.

 These Wi-Fi modules are designed so that designers need minimalWi-Fi knowledge to wireless-enable their products.

Advantages of Wi-Fi:

 No cabling reduces cost of network.

Inexpensive chipsets make it an economical networking option.

Wi-Fi is a global set of standards, any standard Wi-Fi device will work anywhere in

the world.

WPA(Wi-Fi Protected Access) is not easily cracked if strong passwords are used

and WPA2 encryption has no known weaknesses.

Disadvantages of Wi-Fi:

Wi-Fi networks have limited range.

Wi-Fi performance also decreases exponentiallyas the range increases.

Power consumption is fairly high compared to someother low-bandwidth standards, such as Bluetooth,making battery life a concern.

 The most common wireless encryption standard, WiredEquivalent Privacy or WEP, has been shown to be easilybreakable even when correctly configured.

Conclusion:

From the previous chart we can see that the number of Wi-Fi users technology is rapidly increasing over the last fewyears.

Future assumptions indicate that the number will be

doubled in the current year.

Business organizations all around the world have alreadystarted implementing this technology.

Due to it’s advantages even home users are being

tempted to use this technology and stay connected withfamily and friends being mobile connectivity.

 Therefore to conclude we can say that Wi-Fi has a brightfuture and will be the basis for any further innovations innetwork technologies.
