The Function

The function of the respiratory is that it supplies blood with oxygen for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body.

Major Organ Structures

• Lungs- Paired organs in your chest that add oxygen to your blood and then it carries it to your cells.

• Trachea- A bony tube that carries air from your mouth and nose to your lung (commonly know as the ‘windpipe’)

• Bronchi- Two tubes inside your lungs divided from the trachea that carry air to and from the lungs.

• Diaphragm- A sheet like muscle that contracts downward into the abdomen which enlarges the chest, allowing air to fill the lungs.

Other important

• Alveoli- Tiny air sacks within the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

• Pharynx- Moves air into lungs and food into your stomach.

• Epiglottis- A piece of cartilage that makes sure foods doesn’t enter your lungs.

Diseases That Affect This System

• Asthma- A chronic condition that can block your lungs and make it hard to breath. Can not be cured but has fast acting medication and long term.

• Influenza- Fever, headache, and soar throat. Is cured by medicine and can be vaccinated.

• Pneumonia- Inflammation of the lungs. Can be treated by medication but can be life threatening the best thing is to get vaccinated.

• Bronchitis- Increased secretion of mucus in the bronchi which blocks it causing a cough.

Relationships between other systems

• Nervous system- The brain monitors respiration and blood and gas levels.

• Excretory system- It eliminates water vapor through exhalation.

• Cardiovascular system- they work together in getting oxygen to tissues and transporting co2 out.
