Largo Tibet’s Mission Statement The mission of Largo Tibet is to provide a safe and nurturing

environment where students actively participate in the learning process. 

     To this end, it is the shared responsibility of parents, teachers, and the community to expose the students to a variety of learning opportunities which leads to excellence in all areas: social, emotional, intellectual and physical.

    We at Largo Tibet encourage our students to have an understanding that all people’s perspectives and beliefs have value.

Our media center collection consists of 8768, which averages 11.5 books per students. This collection consists of 10 E books, 18 VHS tapes, 12 music CDs, 10 audio books, and 7 book sets. The average age of our media center collection is 1997. In 2012, our school circulation record was 53, 787. Our school programs are as follows: GALILEO, Discovery Education Unitedstreaming, Learning Odyssey, Renaissance Learning, Kidspiration, Storybook Weaver, Video Furnance, American Biographies, Brainpop. Some teachers have personal accounts for Edhelper, Enchanted Learning, abcteach, and Readworks.

Background of Largo Tibet Elementary School

Located on the south side of Savannah, Georgia Title 1 school serving 787 students in grades P-5. Our Largo family consists of 37 classroom teachers, 5 Special Education

teachers, 5 specialty teachers (Art, Music, P.E., Spanish, Science), 4 EIP resource teachers, 15 paraprofessionals , 3 gifted resource teachers, 1 counselor and 1 sign language interpreter.

Largo Tibet is an International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school. As an IB candidate school, we must create and implement the curriculum using the following profiles: Risk taker, knowledgeable, caring, principled, communicator, thinker, balanced, open minded, reflective, and an inquirer. As a candidate school, teachers have to use the profiles, plus IB attitudes.

Additional DemographicsLargo Tibet’s demographics include 586 African Americans,

96 Caucasians, 50 Hispanics, 16 Asians, 1 American Indian, and 38 Multi-Racial students. Sixty two students are identified in the special education program and 90 students are in the Early Intervention Program. We also have 4 students who are in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. Over 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In 2011, Largo Tibet made AYP with increases in math and reading scores.

Recent Changes and Upgrades

•Largo Tibet Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in Chatham County (Built in 1969) •Last year, a K-1 wing was built using EPLOST funding. •The media center is located in the front of the school next to administrative offices. •Because of the growing number of students, several changes have taken place. First, part of the media center was converted into our second computer lab. This lab contains 30 computers, 1 promethean board, and a printer. Even though the lab is in the media center, it is considered as a separate entity.•Now Largo Tibet has two computer labs with a total of 60 computers. Each teacher has been assigned 1ipad for student use. Each classroom has a promethean board and projector for interactive teaching and learning.•In addition, our school has two COWS (Computer on Wheels) with a total of 60 laptops.

Media Center UsesStudents in grades K-1 are allowed to check out one book per

week. Students in grades 2-5 are allowed to check out two books per

week.No late fees are accessed.Teachers have no check out limitations.The media center is used for biweekly faculty meetings and other

staff training.The media center is also used for: Beta Club induction, Scholastic

Book Fair, Science Fair exhibition, Spelling Bee, Family Reading, Curriculum Night and Math Nights.

Our Media CenterFixed Scheduling (Media Specialist mandated)Grades K-2 can only come to the media center (whole

group) Grades 3-5 must go and come in groups of 3.Our media center hours are from 8:30-2:45 daily. No before

or after school service available.Because of some of the functions/programs, our media

Savannah Chatham County Public School System Media Center Policies

School Media Center Program:Media centers will operate according to flexible schedules in

accordance with State Rule 160-4-4-.01, and classes will not be assigned to media specialists or media centers in order to provide planning/free periods for teachers or for the purpose of regular class instruction.

Media specialists and teachers will plan collaboratively to ensure

the use of the media center resources and services that support the curriculum.

Board Policies Continued Materials and equipment for the media center will be selected by the media

specialist with input from the media committee in accordance with the selection criteria set forth in Policy IF.

The Media Specialist will implement a weeding program to examine and evaluate the media center collection.

Facility Usage PolicyApplications for the use of facilities will be considered and

scheduled according to the following priorities: The Board of Education recognizes that school sites are owned by the

community and that proper use of School District facilities by the community should be encouraged. It is the policy of this Board of Education to make School District facilities available for community use when these areas are not being used for school programs; but at the same time use of these areas must conform to the rules set down by the Board of Education.

Sample Facility Usage Policy I. Procedures A. District Programs: In all cases the regular school or Community Education activities shall have

first preference when requesting the use of any part of the building or grounds. Some custodial or food service expense may be assessed. B. Community Groups Free Rental: Eligible community organizations: Non-profit, service and civic organizations with school district . Such as: Scouts, 4-H clubs, Booster Club, Jaycees, Lions, Ministerial, etc. All groups must be supervised by responsible adults. Some personnel expenses may be assessed. C. Rental Fee Groups: Standard rental fee will be charged to the following groups: 1. Community groups and organizations when engaged in profit making activities. 2. Commercial organizations or business groups when using the facilities to pursue sale of their product. 3. Religious, sectarian or similar groups when holding a service related to their group. 4. Any group not meeting the criteria established in other categories. D. Auditorium Usage Special Considerations 1. All groups using the auditorium must remove all materials, refuse and any items brought into the facility within 24 hours of the completion of their event. If items are not removed there will be a $25 a day charge. 2. All groups using the facility are required to do a final cleaning and walk through of the performance, storage and dressing room areas. All three auditorium curtains should be closed at the completion of all activities. 3. Any work in order to get things back in order, other than regular custodial work, will be billed back to the group or individuals. II. Special Charges: A. Custodial Service expense will be assessed to all groups requesting the following: 1. If the facility is needed before or after normal working hours, or 2. If custodial services are needed, which would prohibit the custodian from fulfilling his/her regular duties. B. Food Service expense will be assessed to all groups requesting the use of District food service equipment. A food service person(s) must be on duty when kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, ovens, steam equipment, etc. are being used. C. Extra expense will be assessed to any group for the following reasons: 1. Damages and/or misuse of equipment and facilities. 2. Additional clean up needed. D. All groups using school facilities on a rental basis or who are assessed a special charge, must pay the billing within 30 days of scheduled use

Use of Facilities Policy Cancellation or consideration for continued use: District has the right to cancel or discontinue future use of the facility to any group for the

following reasons:

A. Poor group supervision

B. Misuse of equipment or facilities.

C. Group conduct of an unacceptable nature.

Liability and Property Damage:

The individual or organization shall also assume liability for any property damage, which occurs during the use

of the facility. If the individual or organization, making the request, charges admission, or is a commercial

organization, said organization or individual must furnish, prior to the use of the facilities, a certificate of

liability insurance combined with single limits of $1,000,000 and workers compensation, if the renter is

employing workers. The insurance policy must name the school district as an additional insured.

A. The permit holder will indemnify the school district for all damages to the school or other property

occurring during the scheduled activities by persons participating or in attendance.

B. Any loss, breakage or need of repairs of facilities or equipment must be reported to the administration

immediately by the leader in charge of the scheduled activity.
