Pat CostelloChartered Accountants HouseChartered Accountants Irelandrecently moved into its new €47mtraining centre and administrativeoffices on Pearse Street, Dublin 2.Chartered Accountants House has25 meeting rooms, ranging fromsmall rooms suitable for up to tenpeople to two larger theatreswhich can handle 600 or 700 delegates. For a really big crowd, these can be combined to makeone larger space.

According to CAI chief executivePat Costello: "We've already hosted a number of external eventsand the feedback has been verypositive in terms of both comfortand the technology on offer. Thequality of our AV and microphonesystems is second to none. We alsohave facilities for live internetstreaming of events. It's an engaging and enigmatic building, with the walls featuring our art collection which we've built upover the past 60 years. Hopefullythat makes for a stimulating environment."

In Costello's view, there isalways a demand for externalmeeting locations, even in tougheconomic times. He said: "Theyallow for clarity of thought andencourage blue sky thinking.

People from outside the city arealso always looking for reasonablypriced business centres. Being nextto the train station we're ideallysuited for that."

Linda McCoyCroke ParkAs firms looked to cut costs lastyear, many opted to hold theirsmaller meetings in-house. As aresult, Croke Park ConferenceCentre has refocused on largerevents. According to commercialmanager Linda McCoy: "Enquiriesdropped in 2009 though our conversion rate remained verygood. Our focus this year is on ourlarger meetings and events such asAGMs, annual seminars, conferences, exhibitions and socialevents such as award ceremonies. We've even done a few weddings."

Croke Park's largest event facility is the Hogan Suite, whichcan cater for 800 people theatrestyle. Also in the Hogan Stand aretwo mezzanine rooms, which canhost 250 and 275 people theatre-style, or 525 combined. There arealso a number of smaller rooms, including the Small SyndicateRoom which accommodates eightpeople, while the standard roomscan hold 30.

Last year saw Croke Park

become one the first carbon neutral sports stadiums in theworld following a major overhaulof its energy management. McCoysaid: "We made a significantinvestment in our network and ITinfrastructure in 2009 and we arebuilding on this for our conferenceclients. We also achieved ISP 4001certification and carbon neutrality,so Croke Park is now a genuinelygreen venue."

Due in April is the opening ofthe redeveloped GAA Museum."This will make it even more interesting for conference centreclients to visit," said McCoy.

Vera DentFinnstown Country House HotelWhen the Citywest Group purchased Finnstown Country

House Hotel in Lucan in 2007, JimMansfield promised that it wouldbe transformed into a state-of-the-art hotel and conference destina-tion. Three years on and Finnstownhas nine meeting rooms, includingthe Cellar Bar, which can host up to130 people seated.

According to sales executiveVera Dent: "The hotel has beentotally refurbished and finished to a very high standard. All themeeting rooms come fullyequipped with high spec conference facilities, are air conditioned and have plenty ofnatural daylight. The hotel'sgrounds are also suitable for outdoor activities and team-building events."

Dent said that 2009 was a difficult year for the hotel's

conferencing arm, but she is optimistic that the coming 12months will see business improve. She said: "Last year there was ademand for meeting rooms but thenumber of delegates in attendancewas scaled back. Like most of theindustry, we have revised our pricestructure, without compromising onservice. Companies are still invest-ing in staff training and Finnstownis ideal for such activities."

Zoe WalshMoran Bewley's HotelsThe Moran Hotel Group, whichowns six hotels under the auspices of Moran Hotels andBewley's Hotels, expects thatwhile demand for meeting roomsis unlikely to grow in 2010, com-petition in the sector is likely toincrease significantly.

According to sales director Zoe

Walsh: "Demand for our meetingrooms increased in 2009 due to thehighly competitive prices on offerand the fact that companies arepricing around for better value formoney. Bewley's Hotels alsoopened new banqueting facilitiesfor up to 300 delegates in ourDublin Airport and Ballsbridge properties. So we can now cater forlarger events and offer a one-stopshop for both smaller training andlarger conferences and events.

"In 2010, I don't think therewill be an increase in demandgenerally but we hope to benefitfrom the increased demand forquality at a competitive price. Werecently opened six new meetingrooms in Bewley’s NewlandsCross, a new conference and banqueting suite in Bewley’sDublin Airport and the stunningThomas Prior Hall in Bewley’s

Ballsbridge, which we believe isone of the most magnificent conference and banquetingvenues to open in Dublin in recentyears.

“This church-like Victorian Hallhas a ten-metre high vaulted ceiling, stain glass windows andoriginal oak panelled walls andcan comfortably seat 200 to 300people theatre style."

Pauline CorcoranRezidor GroupThe coming 12 months will see aslow recovery in demand in theconference and meeting roomssector, according to PaulineCorcoran, national director ofsales for the Rezidor Hotel Group, which operates the Radisson Bluand Park Inn brands in Ireland.Corcoran said: "While we experi-enced a decline in business last

year, we found that the size andflexibility of facilities, coupled withour proactive sales and marketingstrategies, resulted in higher thanoriginally anticipated meetingroom occupancy levels.

“Booking trends changed in2009, with a shorter lead-in time, reduced number of guests

attending events, and a greaterfocus on costs and added value."

Rezidor's Radisson Blu hotelsare located in Dublin, Cork,Galway, Sligo, Limerick andLetterkenny. Corcoran instanceddevelopments in the Galway hotelas being of particular interest forcompanies located west of theShannon. "Radisson Blu Galwayrecently opened the Live Lounge. This is a purpose-built, high-techvenue over two floors and offers6,000 sq ft of style and technologyin a great space. The Live Loungeis the perfect venue for a uniqueproduct launch, exhibition, meeting or private dinner."

Like most hotels, the RadissonBlu hotels now try to offer better value to customers. "Ourexperience is that the skilled meeting planner looks at morethan just a meeting room whenplanning a conference, banquet orevent, and that the additional facilities and services offered canbe instrumental to a successfulmeeting or event," said Corcoran.

Deirdre McEniffDublin Skylon HotelIncreased competition in the conference market means that

precision at competitive rates isvital in the current climate. That'sthe view of Deirdre McEniff, salesand marketing manager at theDublin Skylon Hotel, which last yearlaunched a range of new packages.

McEniff said: "Price is becomingmore and more of an issue, but thecheapest offer is not always thebest. In response to the economicdownturn, we have launched newpackages aimed at targeting breakfast meetings, as these areless expensive for companies whoare perhaps tightening their beltsthis year. The client still needs tohave the confidence in the productand quality of services.”

The Skylon’s conference offeringincludes six meeting rooms, ranging from the 100-personcapacity Munster room to the smallerElland and Connaught rooms, which can host up to 18 people.

McEniff added: "We regularlyfollow up on a quotation and thennegotiate on rates to win business, along with inviting clients in toview our facilities. We have alwaysfollowed up with clients post-eventfor their feedback on how theirevents went. This is a very usefulway of maintaining our standardsand ensuring repeat business."

Siobhan PaddenWestbury HotelThe Westbury Hotel in centralDublin has undergone an extensive makeover in recentyears, including the meetingrooms and their equipment. As aresult, according to SiobhanPadden, events and reservationsmanager, the Westbury maintainedits meetings and events marketshare through 2009.

The Westbury has seven meeting rooms that can host fromeight people boardroom style andup to 45 people theatre style. TheGrafton Suite Ballroom, which canbe sub-divided, can accommodateup to 220 people theatre style.

Padden said: "We are optimisticthat 2010 will be a better yeardue to the high level of enquiriesand number of bookings made todate. Small residential conferenceswere very popular last year."

With customers now workingon tighter budgets, Padden saidthe hotel is offering value addedextras such as video conferencingfacilities. "All of our of meetingrooms have plasma TV/LCD projector and screen, DVD andVHS player, wireless internetaccess and versatile computer

network capability. Our restaurants are renowned for theirfood and service and the loungeand bar are great places to relaxand unwind after a long meeting."

Sean WhelanCitywest Hotel

The big news at Citywest in 2009was the long-awaited opening ofits new convention centre. Keaney said the Podium areaon Level 3 will suit productlaunches and fashion shoots.Keaney added: "We will also beopening the changing rooms forevents if required. They would beideal for holding a drinks reception or team-building

Catriona HeaphyRDSMany RDS customers stage annual events so there is a strongrecurring business line. Howeverthe venue did see a fall-off indemand last year for gala dinnersand Christmas parties. Accordingto marketing executive CatrionaHeaphy: "In response, welaunched new gala dinner packages starting from €55 perperson. Clients are looking for aresponse to current market conditions in the form of morecompetitive prices or additionalvalue for their booking."

Another initiative is new daydelegate packages that offer customers a turnkey solution fortheir event. "Our conference packages relate to our largervenues such as the ShelbourneHall and the Main Hall. Thesepackages include venue rental,WiFi access, AV system, seatingand other ancillary services. For

our smaller conference and meeting room venues, we haveintroduced a day delegate pack-age starting at €50 per person, which includes venue hire, buffetlunch, tea and coffee breaks, projector equipment and otherancillary services."

The RDS Concert Hall, whichcan seat up to 900 people, hasrecently been updated with a newPA system. The venue's website,www.rds.ie, has been remodelledinto a more effective tool forshowcasing events. autumn and that a decline inoffice Christmas parties was offsetby private social bookings. As customers feel the pinch, theAshbourne Marriott has responded with fresh ideas toensure delegates get the mostfrom the meeting.

Davis explains: "Examples ofthis are clever menus to suit a

theme within a budget, reducedday delegate rates tailored to theclient's specific needs and competitive two-tier room hirerates to offer the client the bestvalue for their requirements."

Davis said the hotel’s facilitiessuch as the restaurant and Redbar and lounge help attract custom. "Most importantly,

comfortable, quiet bedrooms areimportant for delegates after aday-long conference. With theMarriott Revive bedding, we canguarantee a great night's sleep toface the next day."

Patrice LennonMaldron Hotel Cardiff LaneAs a small meeting room venue, the Maldron Hotel Cardiff Laneutilises the advantage of its 304bedrooms to capture largergroups that may have a smallerrequirement for meeting space.According to Patrice Lennon: "Wecreate added value by givingaccess to our Club Vitae fitnessclub for meeting room delegatesafter their working day.

"Our rate strategy has had tochange due to tighter client budgets. This has involved percentage roomhire discounts on weak dates andcreating added value throughrefreshments or AV equipment."

The venue is used by companiesfor meetings, presentations, training, etc and this trade fell lastyear. "We expect some pick-up for2010 but feel it will be at leastmid-year before growth returns. We have a number of regularclients which has created a

business base, allowing us togrow occupancy from other transient clients."

Rishnoor KaurMaldron Hotel TallaghtDemand for business meetingrooms last year at the MaldronHotel Tallaght was well below2008 and general managerRishnoor Kaur expects littlechange this year. "Non-corporateactivities have held up best andsocial and leisure gatherings haveseen some growth," she said.

"We are very flexible and try toaccommodate any budgetary constraints our customers mayhave. This hotel is only two yearsold, so all our meeting rooms arein prime condition. We include ourbuilt-in AV equipment free ofcharge in our room hire cost. Inaddition all rooms have air conditioning and a majority havenatural daylight.”

The hotel's leisure centre, witha heated pool, is available tomeeting attendees and Kaur saidfree park in the hotel's under-ground car parking is a majordraw. “Complimentary WiFithroughout the hotel is an additional plus," she said.

Here you can enjoy a meetingroom with a roaring fire and floorto ceiling windows yet still avail offree WiFi and all the modernamenities one would expect from afour star hotel."

The hotel generates custom inthe niche markets of residentialsales meetings and team-buildingevents. Loughrane added: “Whilethe team-building has seen a fall-off, the strategic meetings are stillimportant. Last year local demand

was stronger than in 2008. Nationaldemand levelled out but we doexpect an improvement for 2010."

To attract more business, theCounty Arms is offering free meeting rooms to customers whochoose to eat or stay in the hotel."The response has been very positive. Our bedroom rates arealso keener than in previous years but our service levels areconsiderably higher due to investment in staff training,”Loughnane said.

Paula Cogan Jurys Cork HotelMeeting room and event bookingsat Jurys Cork Hotel in the secondhalf of last year showed a markedimprovement on 2008, with manycompanies taking time out forstrategy meetings for senior managers. "That was not a hugefocus in the boom years, notes

Paula Cogan, the hotel's directorof sales and marketing.

"Our meeting rooms are onlythree years old but we haveupgraded the AV equipment.Because our meeting rooms arededicated for conference use onlyand not used for banqueting, theyhave not taken the toll that manymultifunctional meeting roomssuffer."
