DIRECTOR’S NOTES

This production of BUS STOP is the culmination project for my Masters in Fine Arts in Television, Film and Theatre.

I have always been attached to pieces that contain themes of loneliness, hope, transformation, and, of course, love. Until this year, my work has been focused in Musical Theatre, where these themes are quite prevalent.

In deciding which show I wanted to direct for my thesis project (a project that would showcase my transformation after 3 years of study), I considered both comedic and dramatic pieces. I wanted to challenge myself to work with a text that was difficult and yet still entertaining. A piece where I could work closely with the actors and dig deep, helping them go to places with their acting they may have been uncomfortable to tap into before this, and to help them break boundaries. BUS STOP was the perfect choice. While this piece is no easy task to tackle as a director, it is even more difficult for the actors. BUS STOP forces them to face obstacles, to be together in a confined space and deal with their issues rather than run away from them. These actors have allowed themselves to be challenged and they have put their trust in me as a director to work with them in order to service the words of William Inge. I would like to thank the College of Arts & Letters, the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance, and the TVFT MFA program at CSULA, for putting their trust in me. To be supported by this phenomenal team has been a dream. Special thanks need to be given to my thesis committee Barry Gordon, Steve Rothman, and Meredith Greenburg, without their support and trust I would be a lost lamb. And finally, to the fantastic actors of BUS STOP: you are all so talented, and have beautiful lights within you, please continue to let them shine. Thank you for going on this journey with me!

Early years spent as a production patternmaker in the garment industry led to extensive costume work in commercials, film, television,

music videos, concert tours, stage, and print advertising. Experience working with top designers Theoni V. Aldredge, Bill Whitten, Melissa Daniels, and Pamela Shaw (past president of The Costumer’s Guild) has provided Bruce with opportunities to work with recording artists Prince and David Lee Roth, and entertainment industry work in films such as The Hidden, Slam Dance and television shows like Grace Under Fire. CSULA has been his artistic and occupational home for the past 24 years. (Technical Director and Shops Supervisor) As a poet and theatre artist, Elizabeth Pietrzak has been designing, building, technical directing, and storytelling through live theatre for more than 25 years. She has worked throughout Southern California with colleges and universities, churches, theme parks, local and community theaters, and spent two summers on the east coast doing summer stock theatrein New Hampshire, most notably designing and building 8 shows in 9 weeks for the oldest running summer stock theatre in the United States, the Barnstormers Theatre. Prior to coming to CSULA, she was the Theatre Manager and Technical Director for 17 years at the University of La Verne in their Department of Theatre Arts. While there, she also taught classes in stagecraft, scenic and lighting design, desktop publishing, creative writing, and performance art. Elizabeth earned her BA in Theatre Arts from the University of La Verne and her MFA in Creative Writing, Poetry from Antioch University, Los Angeles. Elizabeth continues to write poetry and has been published in a variety of online journals. She is fascinated by the intersection between science and poetry, the exploration of liminal spaces through performance, the fragmented and de-centered self, and the dialogic nature of identity. “I am intensely interested in poetry and writing that is multi-voiced, multi-languaged, and that presents a mutable, fluid identity.” Elizabeth also writes scripts and monologues for collaborative work with solo performance artists. She approaches her lighting design work as storytelling and calls it “writing with light.” She has studied Irish Gaelic and dabbles on the accordion. She gardens when she can, but mostly lets the plants run wild.

DRAMATURGICAL MATERIAL

and Tulsa Oklahoma, Independence often hosted one night performances of several Broadway shows touring the nation. Inge was often treated to live theater performances due to his association with a local Boy Scout troop. While this small town life features prominently in Inge’s work, he confessed in an interview that “I’m one of those people who grew up in Kansas feeling very superior to it. I felt out of place in that forlorn mid-western agricultural state. I had nothing in common with it at all. It was boring as hell and I wanted out.” It was only after arriving in New York that he began to brag about his Kansas origins. He felt it provided him with something unique to help him stand out among his fellow fledgling playwrights. He later took a brief teaching job in Columbus, Kansas, but found great difficulty teaching due to his growing passion for theatrical writing. He quit teaching to pursue a Master’s Degree from Peabody College in Speech and Drama. Upon graduating, he landed a job writing for the St. Louis Star Times. After three years of writing for the paper, Inge quipped,” one, of course, sees an awful lot of crap… [and] it occurred to me that I had as much a right to fail as any of them.” Upon coaxing from his new friend, acclaimed playwright Tennessee Williams, he started work on his first script. Three months later, his first draft of Farther Off from Heaven was completed. The production opened at Margo Jone’s theater in Dallas, Texas. While he deemed the production successful, he felt it wasn’t up to contemporary New York theater standards. Disheartened, he retreated to St. Louis and resumed the teaching profession which he loathed.

That retreat didn’t last for long as the 1950s proved to be a golden era for Inge. Throughout the next decade, he penned Come Back Little Sheba, Picnic, Bus Stop, and Dark at the Top of the Stairs. All four plays are classics of the American theatrical cannon and found second life in cinemas across the country as renowned films. Throughout the 1950’s Inge was one of the most popular playwrights of the American stage; however, as the nation evolved into the sixties William Inge’s popularity began to dim. He suffered his first commercial failure A Loss of Roses.

William Motter Inge American Playwright May 3, 1913 - June 10, 1973

William Inge was born in the small Midwestern town of Independence, KS. His father, a traveling salesman, would often leave William and his four other siblings with their mother while he would hit the road peddling dry goods. While the Inge family was not prosperous, the town of Independence was an extremely wealthy town boasting more millionaires per capita than any other city in the union. Serving as a pit stop between Kansas City, MO

Even before the curtain rose on the show, lead actress Shirley Booth resigned from the role as the mother, feeling her performance was overshadowed by the far younger romantic lead. While the tensions surrounding the opening were high, Inge said very little about the problems. He did however, provide the N.Y. times with the insight, “our actors are afraid of heightened dialogue….they have an unfortunate habit of wanting to collaborate with playwrights. They love rewriting speeches. You do a speech on which you’ve worked rather hard to bring out a certain nuance – and they try to make it sound ordinary, drop a word here or there, slur two words together to make it sound more prosaic.” While Inge was still able to rehearse another actress, Dorothy Fields to assume the lead, the production opened to a slaughtering of bad reviews. A Loss of Roses dimmed its marquee after only three weeks of performances. After owning the Broadway Theater throughout the 1950’s, Inge suffered his first major commercial failure and took the news hard. While Inge found success in Hollywood with the 1961 production of Splendor in the Grass, he never again found success on the Broadway stage. In 1973, he attempted suicide by overdosing on prescription pills. He was later revived and attempts were made to have him committed, but his sister hesitated as she knew he had great fears of being institutionalized. Five days after his attempted overdose, on June 10th, 1973, Inge checked himself out of the hospital and committed suicide in the Hollywood home he shared with his sister: The cause of death, carbon-monoxide poisoning.

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance.

Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
