Plans have been revealed regarding a £96m housing development project near Netherfield. The Teal Close project includes plans for a nursery, retail units, pub, care home, and a school to go with it’s 830-home development.

The Teal Close site is off the A612 Colwick Loop Road which is situated between Netherfield and Stoke Bardolph, near the Victoria Retail Park.

A pub restaurant, children’s nursery and four retail units are included in the outline planning permission which has been likened to that of a “mini city”. The detailed plans have now been submitted by the Council. It is not yet known the occupants of the retail units, but it has been stated that they will not be related to food.18,000 sqm of employment land have also been included within the plans.

Along with 830 new homes, residents can also expect new leisure areas, including children’s play areas, allotments, play pitches and changing facilities. There will also be an ecology park, a new community building and a new primary school.

Residents from the surrounding areas have said that they were pleased that developers were creating “more than just houses”.

Teal Park is being developed by

property firm AC Lloyd alongside retail development specialist Henry Davidson Developments (HDD)

Director of HDD, Richard Croft said “AC Lloyd Commercial and Henry Davidson Developments are delighted to have submitted detailed plans for a new local centre at Teal Park, including a pub/restaurant, non-food retail and a children’s day nursery.

“This follows on from the planning permission recently granted by Gedling Borough Council for a state-of-the-art care home which together with the local centre will bring new vibrant community facilities to the residents of Netherfield.”

“We have also submitted detailed plans for a new 50,000 sq ft trade park and 145,000 sq ft of industrial and warehouse units that will create fantastic employment opportunities for local people.”

A spokesperson from Gedling Borough Council added: “We can confirm that we’ve received planning applications for units which include a public house, commercial terrace and nursery on the site on Teal Close, Netherfield. The application is subject to approval and will go through the normal planning process before a decision can be made on whether or not permission can be granted.”

Once a year on the first Saturday in August, Burton Joyce & Bulcote WI hold a fundraising coffee morning for a local charity. The event is held in the centre of Burton Joyce in the Old Church Hall.

On Saturday the 3rd of August the organisation held a charity coffee morning in aid of the Community Cares Club which is run by Mo Fayose.

The Community Cares Club intends to create a long-lasting friendship, care and support for those who suffer with loneliness and social isolation in the community and beyond.

A member of WI said “We had a great morning and raised a total of £550.00 from the sale of crafts, cakes, produce, books and a tombola! Mo Fayose also came along to join in the morning”

Pictured left to right is the WI President, Debra Eaton, Mo in the middle and Katherine Forster who is the Chair of the Programme Committee.

The Burton Joyce & Bulcote WI movement began in 1915 and has been a continuous force in helping and supporting women of all ages and from different backgrounds deal with modern day life.

Creative Care are holding a Vintage Afternoon Tea at Bridle Lodge in Burton Joyce on 28th September from 1pm – 3pm.

The event will include tea or coffee and a selection of savouries, pastries and cakes. To attend it will be £7 per person and you must RSVP. The event will take place at Bridle Lodge, 80 Bridle Road, Burton Joyce, NG14 5FS.

The get together is to raise money for the Creative Care Seed to Feed project.

Creative Care provides care and support for people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder and additional severe and complex needs. They offer more than a high-quality environment in which the service users can maximise their individual potential – they provide a home, with a family of expert staff to support them every day.

Creative Care are raising £4,000 to refurbish their polytunnel. At the Bridle Lodge home there are 3 acres of land and a commercial polytunnel. The tunnel is in a poor state of repair and the young

people who live at Bridle Lodge want to refurbish it so that they can grow their own fruit and vegetables, then cultivate, harvest and cook them.

This is an important part of their care plan and positive behaviour support. A group project, fundraising for the repairs and then growing produce, builds social skills, confidence and fosters cooperation and planning, improving quality of life.

Seed to Feed also has a wider impact as they are also involving the local community, as well as inviting the young people at other homes to join in and benefit from the project.

If you would like to attend the Afternoon Tea, contact Louise on 0115 931 3851 or email her at [email protected].

The latest plans for the £22m upgrade of the A614/A6097 corridor, which aim to unlock the economic potential of north Nottinghamshire have been criticised by Lowdham Parish Councilors due to the impending changes to the village roundabout.

The Secretary of Transport announced last October that £18m of funding would be allocated to the council for the scheme following its bid to improve six junctions along the A614 and A6097 between Ollerton and Lowdham.

The scheme aims to support planned housing developments along the route in Bilsthorpe, Ollerton and Blidworth, reduce peak period traffic congestion for the benefit of commuters and local businesses, and improve road safety for all users.

Part of the redesign of the area involves changes to the Lowdham village roundabout which connects the Eppertstone Bypass and

Nottingham Road. The cost of the roundabout changes alone will total £4.4m. The plans laid out are to reduce the speed limit of the roundabout to 30mph on all approaches due to its expansion, increasing its traffic capacity.

However the parish village councilors have raised concerns over the impact on surrounding residents of Lowdham village and their quality of life. There are also fears that the roundabout expansion plans will decrease the amount of green space in the village and even threaten the existing cricket pitch there, a pillar for the community. The changes could also have a profound impact in increasing traffic, creating excessive noise for residents and impacting their health.

Jaqueline Finn, Chairwoman of Lowdham Parish Council says “We are a population of around 3,000 and this will change the face of the village. The work planned will take 12 months to complete, which will be a completely different issue

for residents to deal with. This will bring no benefits to anyone in Lowdham. We don’t think it’s going to work and don’t feel like the county council is taking our concerns on board. Our green space is so valuable to us and we don’t feel like there is any evidence that this expansion would improve matters for the village”

Parish councillor Emma Wilson said “As councillors we believe the full impact of the proposals have not taken into account a large number of factors which will negatively impact the community in Lowdham and the surrounding areas.”

The county council submitted its outline business case to the

Department for Transport for approval in May. Work on Lowdham roundabout would take around 12 months and not begin until winter of 2023.

A Nottinghamshire County Council spokesman said: “The A614/A6097 is a significant highway corridor running down the middle of Nottinghamshire. This road suffers from peak period congestion already and this situation will only worsen without intervention due to growth in the nearby area.

“The cost of this congestion to the economy is significant. Alongside the economic effects are concerns about the environmental and quality of life. It is accepted that the scheme does have some impact on the amount of green space, but this impact will be minimised as far as is possible and will not require the loss of the cricket pitch.

“The recently held public events provided useful feedback and the County Council will now be reviewing the issues raised.”

New plans criticised due to impact on Lowdham Roundabout Visit the Annual Lambley Village Show for a fun packed family day out.

There will be a fantastic line up with a fun dog show from 11am, Haybale racing, a DJ (the Wrks) and live music in the afternoon from 1:15pm. Various craft and art stalls will be available to browse around along with children’s rides and entertainment, build your own scarecrow competition, a raffle and tombola and finally followed by a wonderful charity auction.

The Woodlark Inn will be supplying real ales as well as the famous

“Lambley Cocktail”.

If you feel you are a champion grower, crafter or baker, why not enter one of our classes to win a trophy? – see what’s available on the Lambley Village show facebook page under “menu”.

All proceeds this year will go to the event’s chosen charity “Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes” who take emergency supplies between hospitals to help save lives.

Beginning its journey as a horticultural event, The Lambley Village show has been running for at least 50 years. The event

has changed over this time but it still primarily focuses on locally grown and produced exhibits, encouraging everyone to take part and resulting in a truly exciting community event.

The Nottingham Building Society’s latest chapter will see it link up with the National Literacy Trust to support their work with young people and families across the country.

From Monday 9 September, hot on the heels of International Literacy Day, more than 60 of The Nottingham’s branches across nine counties will begin collecting unused books. The Nottingham hopes to gather hundreds of books of all kinds and conditions. They will be sent to Better World Books to be sold on to avid readers, with all profits donated to the National Literacy Trust.

Research from the National Literacy Trust shows that the more books a child owns, the more likely they are to do well at school and be happy with their lives; yet many children from disadvantaged communities are missing out, with 1 in 8 saying they don’t own a single book.

All money raised will support the charity’s work to get books into

the hands of children living in deprived areas where low levels of literacy are seriously impacting people’s lives.

The Nottingham’s Director of Member Services, Tina Hayton-Banks, said: “Helping people with literacy and numeracy in the communities where we have branches is something that has been at our core ever since we were founded 170 years ago.

“Our founder, Samuel Fox, was passionate about education for all and set up the UK’s first adult school in Nottingham. He was dedicated to helping people increase their employability prospects through improved literacy levels and gave his team time off to go out to factories across Nottingham to help unskilled workers learn to read and write.

“We want to commemorate this, our 170th year, with something that ties in with that legacy and this partnership with the National Literacy Trust is the perfect fit”

National Literacy Trust Chief Executive, Jonathan Douglas, added: “We’re thrilled to be working with The Nottingham and Better World Books.

“When children and young people fall in love with reading, the benefits to their education, wellbeing and future prosperity are boundless. But far too many children from the poorest communities are at risk of missing out, simply because they don’t own a book.”

When an email from Down Under sent by an old ‘Basfordian’ reached our offices, it recalled a time and place long gone but never forgotten. It also demonstrated a link not only with the past but also a variety of local names and locations that belong to far-flung destinations and other moments in history. Often with tales of the unexpected.

First, we take a trip down memory lane with Rod Fisher then Tom Foster reflects on what lies behind the exotic name of the street where he lived and enjoyed his formative years as a schoolboy and aspiring, but seemingly thwarted, Teddy Boy.

It was great to see that Nottingham Bygones is back in print as I loved to receive it in Australia because I was born in Isandula Road, Basford. It’s stories bring back so many great memories of the area, most of which are from the early 1950s to the mid-1960s.

During this time there were five factories on our road along with the police station and the old tram powerhouse. There were also two garment factories at each end that had lots of young girls who worked there, walking up our road each day

along with Radio Rentals assembly factory.

Lightburns and Son resided there too so it was a pretty busy area. I recall that Lightburns even had old tramlines going into the building from Isandula Road, so I guess that it was once a maintenance building for trams. As kids we looked into their engineering works when the doors were open and were amazed at all the noisy machines being run by overhead belts that ran the whole length of the factory.

We also looked in open doors of the substation across the road. We stared at the huge machines that generated power for the trolleybuses that ran along both ends of our road. There was also the local bobby, known as ‘Big Jack’ to our parents because he was very tall indeed, but to us kids he was known simply as Sir!

Based at the police station at the Radford Road end of our road, he was often on a bike which he rode everywhere. One day my mum took me to the local dentist and I walked to Whitemoor School afterwards with a note to say why I was late for class.

When Dad got home from his work at Weldon’s, he asked me what time I got to school that day because Big Jack saw me walking along Whitemoor Boulevard at 10 o’clock. Luckily Mum said I was at the dentist so that’s why. (Big Jack saw everything).

I saw some pictures of the gas

works and that made me think of the times when many of the local kids in the 1950s formed a long line outside the main gates on Saturday mornings to pick up unwanted coke from a large pile of the stuff. We had sacks ready to fill up and we also used our home made trolleys and sometimes roller-skates with wood in between to help take the full sacks of coke home to our outside coalhouse.

Eland Street was a busy place for our mums to do the daily shopping up there with a butcher’s shop, general grocery and the greengrocer too, not forgetting the beer-off as it was called.

I would look in amazement through the greengrocer’s windows at things like bananas, grapes and tropical fruits that sometimes came to our local shops from around the world.

On Eland street there were two barber shops, both called Jonnie

the Barbers! When I sat down at the one where I had my hair cut, I told him what I wanted doing and sat back. But always I got the old Short, Back and Sides treatment and he would say to me afterwards “While your dad pays for it, that’s what you get!” At that time I could not have sideboards, DA (ducktail) at the back, nor Elephant’s Trunk as it was called in the Teddy Boy era.

Those were happy days!

THE CONCRETE CROCU

MANY moons ago, when radios and trains were powered by steam, a programme called ‘Two-Way Family Favourites’ was on air, compulsive listening to thousands of households across the country while vegetables were peeled and the pungent smell of Sunday roast filtered out of the kitchen into the living room.

It aired at noon for an hour and a half, and featured requests from families to play songs for loved ones still stationed in Germany as part of the BFPO (British Forces Posted Overseas).

It began life as ‘Family Favourites’ shortly after the end of hostilities in Europe in 1945 on the BBC’s then ‘Light Programme’ and lasted until 1980...

Crocus Street at the turn of the 19th century though the railway bridge remained and the grimy panorama was much the same for another seven decades, as witnessed by a more contemporary view from the bottom of the street during the

1960s shortly before much of The Meadows was demolished

Scantily clad girls frolicking around the dance floor and split-level discos. In the days before political correctness took hold of society, a local venue at Victoria Centre recalls former DJ STUART MILLS as he continues his journey back in time through Nottingham's club land.

Back in 1973, the Victoria Centre was home to a large underground club known as Intercon. A somewhat discreet entrance to the venue was located just outside the shopping centre to the side of the clock tower, in fact the emergency exit was via the glazed brick work and steps through the base of the tower up on to Milton Street.

Intercon was the name given to the club that was being constructed when HRH the Duchess of Kent visited in 1969. She witnessed the transformation commencement of the former Victoria Station (1900-1969) into a state-of-the-art shopping centre.

Opening in 1973 Intercon became

a very popular nightclub and was taken over in 1975 by Mecca who owned many of the larger dance halls in most UK towns during that period. Mecca put their stamp on it, changing the name above the door to Tiffany’s. It was still going strong many years later, a versatile club featuring two levels, each with its own dance floor and two DJs often catering for different music tastes. A private function could be catered for on one level with live music blasting out below.

My memory in 1975 was of visiting the club, struggling down a long flight of stairs in a partial drunken state and finding myself dancing on the first level to Dee Clarke's Ride a Wild Horse. Later I ventured further into the depths of the club to find

a much larger room and danced, strangely enough to Ride A Wild Horse once more. Clearly the two DJs were competing for the crowds with the best dance floor filler of the time, OR they needed a game plan.

In 1980 'Tiffs' became Zhivago’s. Black walls and chrome rails now adorned the two dance floors which remained untouched but now more use was made of the stage in the main room, as years went by many famous bands would grace that stage but few as well-known as George McCrae.

Re-live more of Stuart's memories and find out about happened to the Victoria Centre Club in the latest edition of Bygones - on sale at local retailers in Nottingham.

Skimpy, Scampi and Bikinis on the Dance Floor Simply RedsThe dismissal of former Nottingham Forest favourite Martin O'Neill as the club's manager this summer, less than six months after his appointment, came as a shock to many football fans. Particularly those at the City Ground that had many fond memories of the team's glory days in the 1970s and 1980s. In this exclusive interview with the Irishman before his return to the Forest, he recalls those halcyon days in the sun under the stewardship of the legendary Brian Clough.

Find out what Martin O'Neill has to say in the latest edition of Bygones - On sale at many local retailers including all MSR Newsagents across Nottingham.

Burton Road Jubilee Park, Gedling Country Park, and Arnot Hill Park join a record number of parks and green spaces collecting a Green Flag Award.

Arnot Hill Park, which celebrates its 100 year anniversary later this month, has retained the award for the 13th consecutive year, Gedling Country Park for the 4th year in a row and Burton Road Jubilee Park also received the award for the fifth time.

The parks are among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world that have received a prestigious Green Flag Award, the mark of a quality park or green space.

Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said:

“Quality green spaces, parks and play areas really matter to our residents and visitors. Our staff do a fantastic job and managing these areas and they really are beautiful places to spend some time. Its brilliant to receive these awards, not just for one but three of our parks, its recognition of what great places they are to visit and how much our visitors appreciate them.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said;

“It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners.”

“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”

Go on a bike ride Go and explore! You never know what you could find – whether it’s a fun new playground, a rope swing

or a scenic spot to make the most of the sunshine. Taking along a delicious picnic and a frisby for some fun is also a great option.

Organise a local litter pick Getting together with your child’s school friends and their parents at a local park is a great way to catch up during the holidays whilst cleaning up our environment at the same time. This saves wildlife from getting caught up in old bottles and beer rings!

Go strawberry picking There are still plenty of places to pick your own strawberries or rasberries across the country. Fresher and tastier than your supermarket, picking your own fruit encourages healthy eating for children, in addition to reducing transportation emissions.

Environmentally friendly and fun activities with the family Many of us dream of peace and

relaxation on holiday to escape the hectic day to day schedules of our regular lives, but this is easier said than done for those of us who find it hard to leave their stress at home.

With recent studies showing that our pets make us happier, it seems that taking your furry friend on holiday could help you to relax and make the most of your time away. Here are the top five health benefits of taking your pooch on holiday:

Dogs can reduce stress and mental illness

It can often be a worry leaving your dog with a friend or in a kennel while you’re on holiday, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Research from 2017 revealed that

86% of dog owners believe having a dog can help bring stress levels down, which is the perfect reason to bring your pooch on holiday to experience adventures together and further reduce your own stress.

The mental health benefits of having a dog are profound, as your lovable companion provides you with never-ending emotional support, so why not make them your holiday buddy?

They make you embrace the fresh air

It’s no secret that exercise is good for you, however sometimes it can feel like a chore. But when your dog is eagerly expecting you to take them on their daily walkies, you have no choice but to get up and go even if you don’t feel like it. Most of us are exploring the local sights on holiday, so it’s the perfect reason to bring your pooch along for those extra steps and enjoy the adventure together.

Researchers found that pet owners undertake almost double the

amount of exercise of non-pet owners, getting out five times a week compared to just three times for non-pet owners, so it’s a perfect opportunity to create more memories on holiday with your furry friend.

Dogs increase your immune system

As well as avoiding separation anxiety and helping you to get more exercise, dogs help your immune system get stronger over time. Owning a dog helps your body to build healthy bacteria colonies which boost your immune system, making the whole family healthier.

Epidemiological studies show that children who grow up with a

pooch are less likely to develop autoimmune illnesses, such as allergies and asthma, due to the diversity of microbes that your pup brings into your home. A new holiday location means unfamiliar germs for the whole family, so it makes sense to bring your furry family member along to help keep everyone healthy and happy.

Dogs improve your quality of life

Nine in ten owners believe that their pet is good for their health and wellbeing, with six out of ten owners saying their pets bring laughter to their lives and seven in ten, feel more relaxed in their company, not to mention that a dog would love a nice weekend away with it’s human! – what more reasons do you need to holiday with your dog?

There are plenty of amazing locations in the UK with brilliant accommodation such as dog friendly Cotswolds cottages, so you don’t have to worry about a lack of accommodation choice. Enjoy!

Prograss once again attended the fantastically organised East Bridgford Show and the difference in the colour of the grass between this year and last year was incredible.

Last year our stall was set up on what looked like a barren brown wasteland as the grass had been burnt to a crisp by the unprecedented ferocious hot and dry Summer, whereas this year it lay on lush green healthy grass.

This made a huge difference in people interested in what we do and we picked up many more enquiries than last year. It also gave us the opportunity to display the new seed disc drilling machine and also a new John Deere lightweight but powerful scarifier which gives more control over small and difficult shaped lawns.

Pictured here is Prograss owner Tony Grice getting ready to demonstrate the new equipment in front of the stall. Prograss have been attending the East Bridgford show for many years and the show gives them the opportunity to not only get new business but also to connect with existing customers and answer any questions they may have.

Many lawns have still not recovered from last years Summer and may need professional help and Prograss would love the

opportunity to come and do a no obligation lawn health check and quote to get your lawn back on track. With Autumn around the corner now is the perfect time to do it.

New interest free Easy payment scheme for Prograss

Prograss have put in place a new easy payment direct debit scheme where the cost of a years lawn work can be paid on a monthly basis with

no interest. The cost of mechanical work (aeration, scatification, etc) often means higher payments in some months and lower in others when quoting for a years lawn work. The easy payment scheme allows the customer to spread the cost equally over 12 months with no interest - by direct debit. Please ask for further details.

Using qualified staff and overlooked by an agronomist, Prograss are Nottingham’s main independent

lawncare Company offering a range of services such as weed and moss control, specialist fertilisers, scarification, aeration, professional overseeding etc. Their competitors in this area are mainly franchises and if you would like to see what the difference would be from using an independent company please get in touch by either calling 01949 837367 or visiting us at our website, pro-grass.com.

Were Relatives of Amy Winehouse & Aretha Franklin Destined to Argue?

The importance of keeping your Will up-to-date and legally sound cannot be overstated. The majority of people would agree.

Yet every year there are disputes over estates. Who should get what? What exactly were the deceased person's wishes? You might think it’s just lawyers being cautious (or trying to make money) that they bang on about getting professional advice. But the reality is that making a will can be a complex process.

Two stories hitting the headlines recently – disputes about the estates of famous singers – Amy Winehouse and Aretha Franklin - are great examples of why we, as ordinary humans, should keep our own affairs in order.

Amy Winehouse – Dying Without A Will

Amy Winehouse may have been gone for just over eight years now, but the battle over her £3 million estate is still ongoing. Amy Winehouse didn’t leave a will. She died intestate. Under Intestacy Rules her estate passed to her parents Janie and Mitch, who also set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation which helps young musicians and other people suffering from addiction.

The matter seemed to be satisfactorily settled. Yet ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil appears to be pursuing a claim for £1 million lump sum and a monthly allowance to meet his lifestyle needs. Allegedly, he’s stating that the settlement did not amount to a clean break from the marriage. A factor that allows him to bring this claim.

Aretha Franklin – Multiple (Handwritten) Wills

While Amy Winehouse didn't leave

any will at all; an entirely different issue seems to have grabbed the headlines when it comes to the estate of soul legend Aretha Franklin.

It transpires that three handwritten Wills pertaining to the singer's $80 million estate have been found in her Detroit home. All three Wills contradict each other.

The final Will, dated March 2014, was discovered under some cushions and appears to leave assets to family members. A handwriting expert is now working on the validity of the Will, and legal experts are looking into its legal standing. It is four pages long, with several words scribbled out and notes added in the margins. The previous two Wills were discovered in a locked cabinet in 2010.

Only One Version of the Will Is Valid

As far as Aretha Franklin's Will is concerned, the situation came to a head at a heated hearing at Oakland County Probate Court on Tuesday 6th August 2019 where

Franklin's heirs battled over the estate, using elements of the conflicting Wills to make their case.

Our advice

Family arguments over what’s left behind are not rare. In cases where there isn’t a will or there are multiple wills, it’s unlikely that your plans will be carried out properly.

Take time to talk through what you want to do with a legal professional. If possible, make the family aware of what you’re planning to do. This is particularly important when it comes to families where there are previous marriages or children involved.

If you or your family are concerned about the estate of a loved one or need advice about planning for the future, please feel free to call us on freephone 0800 056 6042 or contact us via our website https://www.curtisparkinson.com/contact/ to see how we can help.

Autumn is soon to be with us and the season of mellow fruitfulness is just around the corner.

While the nights continue to draw in we can expect to have some warm sunny days followed by some cold nights with the chance of early frosts in central areas. In the garden it’s time to pick top fruit, clear away dead summer flowers and tidy up lawns in preparation for winter and next spring.

Beds and Borders . . .

Late autumn colour from echinacea, dahlias, asters and Japanese anemones in white and pink should give height and interest to flower borders at this time of the year. Many bedding plants took pride of place in August and unless we are blessed with a late ‘Indian summer’ of warm, sunny days, will also be coming to the end of their useful life.

It’s always a dilemma to know when it is most appropriate to dig out these flowering wonders, but cold nights and the need to get planting

spring bulbs and autumn bedding will urge you on as their blooming potential wanes.

It’s a good time to cut Leyland cypress and other evergreen conifer hedges. To reduce the height of boundary hedges you may need to take a saw to the tops instead of clipping back new growth. With all hedges try to create a tapering shape that is thinner at the top than the base. This slope will help snow to fall off the hedge that could otherwise pull down branches.

Weeds, especially perennial ones such as nettles, creeping thistle, couch grass and docks can easily be controlled while they have a good leaf colour and the sap is moving down to the roots. A thorough but careful spray of foliage with a systemic tough weed killer will not only kill the stem, but the roots as well.

Patio Tubs & Baskets…

Bedding and hanging baskets should still be going strong if you have fed and watered them

regularly. Without supplementary feeding you may find that the plants have exhausted any background nutrients in the compost and with the resulting leaves pale yellow the plants are unable to produce more flowers. To encourage fresh vigour, a feed of soluble plant food over the leaves and around the roots will give the plants an almost instant boost that will encourage new buds to form and probably give you an extra four weeks of flower power. Lawncare…

Most lawns will have suffered from the low rainfall, combined with normal wear and tear during the summer, now is the ideal time for some attention if they are to wake up next spring looking thick, healthy and attractive.

September Garden Notes - By John Draper of Greener Gardens Start with an application of Autumn lawn food this will encourage a stronger root system and harden off growth, many proprietary brands also contains a moss killer that will control the first infestations of this weed that spreads so easily in autumn wet weather.

Autumn lawn renovation such as scarification will pull out any dead material, called ‘thatch’ and lift up any grass runners so that the mower can trim them. A spring-tine rake is the ideal tool for the job. If all this sounds daunting or hard work, which it is, why not call Greener Gardens who will work with to create a personalised lawn programme.

Don’t forget to raise the cutting height of the blades so the grass is left a little longer at each cut.

If you are planning to start a new lawn, it’s the ideal time to kill off all existing growth so that the soil will not be riddled with pernicious weeds. Use the systemic weed killer to destroy any existing grasses and weeds making sure that you apply only on a still day so that wanted plants are not killed by any spray drift.

For help with your lawn, Greener Gardens are your local independent BASIS Lawn Assured standard lawncare specialist. The scheme helps ensure a consistent and

high standard of practice in the professional lawn care sector.

Grow your Own…

Vegetables should be being harvested right through September and some of them stored away for winter use. Some people freeze their excess crop of runner (stick) beans and French beans.

Tomatoes, sweet peppers and aubergines growing in pots or planters will still need watering regularly and feeding each week to encourage quick ripening and maximum flavour. To encourage maximum sunshine onto the fruits it is well worth removing a few of the lower leaves that are shading

the ripening fruit.

There is still time to sow baby salad leaves in window boxes in Compost or on the windowsill in a decorative Herb Planter.

Wrap grease bands around the stems of fruit trees to catch the grubs of the climbing winter moth.

Burton Joyce and Lowdham Local News is giving you a chance to win a pair of tickets to see two of the world’s greatest classical voices live in concert at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall on 2nd October!

In November 2018, Aled Jones and Russell Watson came together to release their debut album ‘In Harmony’, which shot straight into the UK top 10. In September and October of this year, the pair will take to the stage together for their first joint UK and Ireland tour, bringing their live experience to some of the country’s most beautiful venues.

‘In Harmony’ features a wealth of well-loved hymns and arias– ranging from stunning arrangements of "Ave Maria" – to more modern classics such as “You Raise Me Up”. The first single, “Where Have All The Flowers Gone/Here’s To The Heroes”, is a timely tribute celebrating the centenary of the end of the First World War and the 70th anniversary of the NHS – to the men and woman who inspired a generation.

As two of the classical world’s vocal powerhouses, Aled and Russell have received countless prestigious awards, record-breaking sales and chart successes.
