Big Question of the Week “Who is the most fascinating character from history for you?”

Black History Month

Since 1987, people in the UK have been recognizing October as ‘Black History Month’. This October, all the

children in school have spent some time on activities related to this. This may have been exploring the theme

of discrimination, thinking about the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, focusing on a famous black person from

history or just sharing stories set in different countries or with central characters who are black. My

assembly this week was based on encouraging the children to think about why we don’t feel like we need to

have a white history month. The children were quick to realise that we don’t need a white history month as all

of the historical figures we can remember and most of those we learn

about tend to be white. I have asked the children to take some time over

half term if they can to gather some information about a famous black

person from history – perhaps a famous artist, inventor, musician or

politician – and present this information in any way they want. You might

want to ask the children if they can remember what Lewis Latimer is

famous for as he was one of the people we talked about in our assembly.

‘The Adventure Awaits…’

A Short but Busy Week!

During this final week of half-term we have looked at nocturnal animals with the

story “Owl Babies”, inspired by our sound of the week “n”. In maths we have been

looking at “big” and “small”, comparing and ordering objects. In Computing we

uploaded a photograph to our own Tapestry page. Mrs Roberts came to speak to

Rec and Y1 about growing up in Uganda in celebration of Black History Month

We have had a fun packed week in Brambly Hedge this week! Mrs Roberts

visited us yesterday to talk about her childhood in Uganda, we learnt that

Uganda is a very hot country because it is near to the equator and that it is

summer all year round! Mrs Roberts showed us that many African Mums carry

their babies on their back, we saw pictures of schools and children playing games

like hoola-hoop just like we play in the playground! We learnt that giraffes,

elephants, monkeys, antelope and crocodiles live in Uganda. Thank you very much

to Mrs Roberts for coming and spending time with us teaching us about Uganda,

we had a wonderful time! We also learnt about our senses and carried out a 'smell pot' experiment to find out

how good our sense of smell is, some children's sense of smell was very accurate!!

Emerald City have had a busy week. In maths we have been looking at addition and

revising number bonds to 20. In literacy, we have role played the Highway Rat and

asked him some deep questions! In science we have looked more closely at deserts

and how animals can live there. In geography, we have looked at our home addresses

and what the lines within them mean.

This week in Narnia the children have produced some fantastic work, despite it

being the final week before half-term. In English the children re-wrote the story

'Floss', from Floss the dogs' view point. In art, the children created their own

Autumn inspired Mixed Media Art, using a range of different mediums. In science,

the children looked at how some forces can act at a distance. Finally, to end the

week the children became actors, creating their own freeze-frames to represent

bible stories on Saviours.

More Fun!

For our final week before Half Term in Hogwarts Class, we had

the delightful task of "making poo"! We replicated the diges-

tive system and chopped and mashed food, fed it down a pipe

into a carrier bag stomach where we added vinegar "acids". An

old stocking was used to represent our intestines and we

squeezed the food along it. As it travelled along, the juices of

nutrients came out and were absorbed by sponges the same

way our body absorbs the goodness. Eventually we ended up

with the final waste at the end of the stocking. This was then

released and the final "poo" expelled. the children seemed to

really enjoy this lesson! We used this lesson to inform our report writing in literacy, using some wonder-

ful vocabulary. We also performed our Egyptian inspired dances in PE and recreated Egypt in a tray com-

plete with a River Nile.

This week the Shire have written stories about the lives of WW2 evacuees and how their daily lives

changed during the war. In maths, we've tackled some very difficult problems that have required us to

use all of the operations we've covered this term, and in history we made use of Teams and iPads to re-

search some ancient Greek inventions and creations. A fantastic end to this half term!

In Year 6 we have been revisiting and extending our understanding of factors and multiples as well as

prime numbers. In English we have completed and edited our independent writing from our text - Letters

from the Lighthouse, which we are extremely proud of. We have also completed our study of the Battle

of Britain. As part of Black History Month we have considered the lives of prominent black individuals and

their achievements,

including Lilian Ba-

der, the first black

women pilot of the

RAF in WW2. Follow-

ing on from this

theme, we have ex-

plored a palindrome

poem about preju-

dice which created

much debate and dis-

cussion before we

explained to the chil-

dren that you could

read the sentences

both forward and

backwards to give a

completely different

meaning. Some of

the children chose to write their own version.

Special Bonfire Lunch Please note that we will be serving a special Bonfire lunch on Thursday 5th November.

If you had already ordered you child’s lunch this has now been cancelled. Please re book all meals through the

school gateway.

Fundraising - Great Achievement We are very proud of Florence, Rose, Reni and Martha who walked 5 miles last week-end to raise money for The Alzheimer's Association, as their Great Grandma was 90 on Friday and she suffers from this difficult condition. They haven't been able to see her since February so thought this was a great way to mark her 90th. They walked from Frinton Golf Club to Walton Pier and back again. They have raised over £300 . We are all very proud of them. Well Done!

Superb Sports Awards Coach Scott has given out Sports Awards today to children he feels have worked hard and been great team players during his sessions. Well done to all of them!
