Supportive school environment

At all times we aim to provide a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment for students and any situation

that threatens the safety and wellbeing of students or others in the school community is treated extremely seriously

and dealt with as a matter of priority in line with our Responsible Behaviour Plan for students that is developed in

consultation and support of the P&C.

Finally, I would like to encourage all parents to attend our Student Led Conference and Parent/teacher/student

interviews on Thursday 28th February. All students have been working on developing their My Big Picture Plan and I

invite all parents to accompany their student to meet with their RAS teacher and up to 2 subject teachers to discuss

targets/goals and progress. Details for how to make an appointment time will be emailed to you or you can call the

office 41 300 222 to make an appointment. I encourage all parents to attend and take part in the discussions with

your student and teacher so that we are working together on improving outcomes and reaching potential.

I look forward to seeing you on 28th February.

Uniform requirement for SHOES

Please refer to the uniform expectation below for student footwear at school.

Please ensure students are wearing plain black leather/vinyl shoes. For

workplace health and safety, students need to be wearing protective

footwear. Mesh and canvas shoes are not part of the uniform. Students

without correct footwear will not be able to participate in practical activities

eg not able to enter the Industrial Design and Technology (ITD) workshops and

therefore will need to change subjects if they are unable to complete practical

work. We want to be able to help you if you have any issues with purchasing

correct footwear. Please contact the year level coordinators if there are any

concerns with the uniform and we will assist you where possible. Students

should see their year level coordinator to obtain a uniform pass for the day if

they have a uniform concern.

be held on Thursday, March 14th. The AGM starts at 6pm and will be followed by

welcoming all those who regularly attend.

Student-led conferences – term 1

On Thursday, 28th February (week 5), North High will be holding student-led conferences, where

your student will present their My Big Picture Plan to you. The My Big Picture Plan asks the

students to review their previous results, set goals for the coming semester, and make an action

plan to achieve those goals. Using this process allows students to not just think about their goals, but also to write

them down and present them in a formal setting to you and to their RAS or core teacher.

The evening will run from 3:30pm to 6:15pm. Bookings are made through the SOBS link found on the school website.

Each conference runs for 15 minutes.

If you have multiple student conferences to attend, we ask that you leave a 15 minute period between bookings to

allow for conferences that run over time, and travelling between rooms. Conferences will be held in your student’s

usual RAS classroom, or core classroom for year 7s.

In contrast to previous years, the student-led conference evening will also see teachers available for subject specific

discussions, where these are related to a student’s goals.

Bookings for subject teachers can be made by phoning the Bundaberg North SHS office, after a student-led conference

booking has been made.

Chaplaincy support

The Bundaberg North State High School community would like to acknowledge and express our appreciation to the St John’s Lutheran Grace Fund for their generous financial support of the school chaplaincy program. This has enabled SU Qld to increase our chaplaincy service by an extra day each week thus introducing a female chaplain Kelly Giles to the team. We are excited to have Kelly working alongside existing Chaplain Terrence Hawes.

Meeting the Governor

On the 12th February, we had the exciting and honourable opportunity of attending an afternoon tea at the Burnett Riverside Hotel hosted by the Governor of Queensland, Honourable Paul de Jersey and his wife. We attended this event alongside Nakita Geiszler, our Indigenous student representative, and our principal, Miss Robyn Kent, to gather and celebrate the spirit of Bundaberg alongside Governor Paul de Jersey. Other schools leaders and Bundaberg representatives also had the privilege of attending this event. We were given the opportunity to introduce ourselves to various school leaders and Bundaberg council members, to share our visions for the current year and build connections within our community. Governor De Jersey declared his enthusiasm towards the city and people of Bundaberg, and quickly attended to greeting guests and getting to know the heart of this city. We felt extremely lucky to have the chance to speak to Governor De Jersey (as well as take photographs) and he asked us about ourselves as well as our plans for the year and our future. Overall, the Governor’s event was a lovely experience that allowed us to proudly represent our school, as well as build connections and contacts with not only representatives from neighbouring schools,

but also Bundaberg Regional Council members. Although it was a much more professional setting than Blake and I are used to, having afternoon tea with members of Bundaberg and the Governor of Queensland was an incredibly enlightening and exciting experience. It was a great way to gather the community! - School captains - Hanna Sahlberg and Blake Saffy

Dental van visits North High

The Mobile Dental Clinic will be starting at North High in about 3 weeks’ time. The School Dental Service will be offering a free dental examination and dental treatment to all students that return their Offer of Treatment form. Students had received a form in their RAS class this week. All forms must be completed in ink. Once the form is returned, our friendly Administrative Officer will ring the parent/legal guardian to arrange an appointment. Please note: A PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN MUST ATTEND the first appointment as the way we deliver our service has changed. For the 1st appointment the parent /guardian must attend – after that a responsible adult can attend or if after discussion with the operator at the first appointment, you are happy for your child to attend from class themselves, this can occur. Sometimes there is important paperwork you will need to sign. We understand there will be exceptions so please discuss with us. We are asking you to attend once every 2 years. If your child is sick and needs to attend a doctor or hospital (which is often more than 2 years) you need to be present. Please work with us so we can deliver the best care to your deserving child. Thank you

Swimming carnival

The day dawned overcast and gloomy but spirits were high and excitement was in the air at Norville Pool on Friday. Some raced for their house, some raced for a personal best and some just had a great time at the annual swimming carnival. Results will be published in a future newsletter.

Girls Academy News

It has been an exciting few weeks for the Bundaberg North Girls Academy. Our enrolments have been coming fast and this has provided another level of support for our new comers in their transition to Bundaberg North State High. New friendships have been formed and our academy leaders embraced all our new arrivals and made them feel very welcome. Our year kicked off with the Girls Academy Induction Camp. The year 7, 8, 9 and 10s went to the Riverside Retreat for an overnight stay where they participated in a number of team building activities which was an total blast. We have also launched our boxing program with the PCYC and this is an absolute hit with the girls. The program promotes ‘discipline, respect and humility’ and will run every Friday at big lunch throughout the term. Our personal training and swimming class on Wednesday and Friday Basketball at the PCYC have also started and will be this term’s afterschool school sport program. The Girls Academy will be sure to keep you posted on our awesome upcoming events throughout the year.

A word from our School Captains Week 3 of the school year was full of exciting events and activities that allowed our students to start off the 2019 school year in a fun and exhilarating way! On Tuesday 12th of February, each grade at North separated into their individual grade groups to attend the ‘Big Day Out’. Being part of the grade 12 ‘Big Day Out’, we saw the entire year group collaborating and working together to build important team-work skills and further develop our relationships. According to all reports, each grade group’s ‘Big Day Out’ was a great success, and we couldn’t be any happier! Just 3 days later, and the first major sporting event was upon us!! On Friday 15th of February, our school held our annual swimming carnival. We saw many students participating and spending the day having fun, collecting points for their houses and spending time with friends. This week’s events would not have been possible if it weren’t for all the staff involved, as well as many of our student leaders, specifically our sports captains and house captains. Great work, everybody!
