Parent Survey
The annual Parent Survey will be sent out on Wednesday, May 7 and will be open until May 19. The survey has two language options, English or Korean. In previous years we have had requests from non-English speakers for assistance from someone who speaks their mother tongue. If you contact the admissions office we can help find a parent or staff member to assist you with translation while you respond to the survey. We want feedback from as broad a representation of our parents as possible. The survey is designed with user ease in mind so should not take more than 10 minutes. We are proud of the incredibly supportive parents at NIS and freely publish the results on our webpage.
Have a Meaningful May,
Laurie McLellan<[email protected]>Board Election
Don't forget that the NIS Board Election will take place, online, from May 5th until May 16th. We are including candidate information again in this week’s bulletin. We also are providing information to help you navigate the

online ballot. We have done a lot of tests and are confident that the system, called Electionbuddy, will work well, though in testing, at least one person discovered the email in the Junk folder. Every member of the community should receive an invitation to vote. If you do not receive your emailed invitation by May 6th, please check your Junk, Trash and Spam folders. We also notice that there are a few parents who share an email address or who have left the email address blank in the Veracross system, meaning that some people (about 5% of the 904 parents eligible to vote) would not receive the email invitation to vote. For these two categories, we can provide a printed ballot that is the same as the online ballot, with a verification system to ensure a clean vote. Those in need of a paper ballot should contact [email protected]. She is secretary to the Director and to the Board and will administer the vote.
Thanks for helping us keep our commitment to being an eco-friendly campus with this shift to online voting.
Monique Taylor, Chair of Governance Committee

ANDREW BALL
I work at Ford, Nanjing. I have spent 3 years in Nanjing, and will be here for another 4 years.
We have spent over 13 years as Ex-Pat's, in Germany and in Nanjing. My children have been educated entirely within the International School system. My son graduated last year from NIS and my daughter is in G9. I have seen IB schooling through all the grades and program phases.
Through the IB system my children have been given the skills and enquiring mind to thrive in the world of today. To now I have been a user/observer. I volunteer to help at School & Charity Events, but I'd like to be even more Value-Add.
In Nanjing, I am on the Ford Governance Committee. I Sponsor our 'Better World’ Charity activities. In my role of Chief Program Engineer I manage Business and Product Development. The role requires broad skills and responsibilities, including Business Plans - Revenue, Cost, Budgets, etc.. Product Planning and Development. Program Management. Product and process quality.
I would not class myself as an expert in any of these fields. I know where to look and what questions to ask. I let the experts get on with what they do best, while I give direction and eliminate roadblocks. The School Board should provide the Governance, Budget and Strategy to facilitate the same – facilitating educational excellence and enhancing the community. This is what I get paid to do at work. This is what I can offer the School and Community.
BRENDA L. BERGERON
I am Brenda L. Bergeron. For the past ten years I have made my home in China. From 2004-2006 I lived in Huangshi, Hubei where I worked as an English teacher in the Huaxin Cement Factory. In 2007 I moved to Nanjing and opened Nanjing Consulting Company. This provided me many opportunities to meet families and college students who wanted to either move to China or spend extended periods of time living in China. After living in China for many years I found myself developing many relationships with nationals. I discovered many social needs that I felt I could help address by opening Iced Bakery. It is my desire to provide excellent products and services and to make a lasting, positive impact on the community in which we operate. I am passionate about providing training and education in the field of food services to underserved women and at risk youth, providing them with tools and resources for a successful and fulfilling career.
Board Election Candidates
This year we will have an election for the Board. There are six candidates for three openings. The candidates are Andrew Ball, Brenda Bergeron, Wu Hao, Louise Liu, Mirella Savegnago and Suresh Shyamasundar. Each candidate has written a brief bio statement to introduce themselves.
As part of our Green School commitment we are piloting an online voting system. The election will take place from May 5th until May 16th. If we encounter any glitches with the online system we do have a paper ballot back up plan. All parents have one vote and can vote for up to three candidates.
Regards,
Monique Taylor, Chair of Governance Committee, [email protected]

LOUISE LIU
My son Derek Yu was enrolled last year in McGill University, Canada after spending 9 years at NIS. My younger son Derron Yu is now in Grade 9, this is his tenth year at NIS. Having lived in Nanjing for ten years and having watched two boys grow up in NIS, I recognize that NIS has become a special place of importance to my family and to me.
I am Chinese Canadian, currently working as a Director for Global Technical Support at Trend Micro, a software development company. Prior to this, I worked for eight years in a non-profit organization in Canada. My academic background includes a Bachelor Degree from China, two Master Degrees from Canada, one in Chemistry and one in Management Science. This combined with my over 25 years working experience in multiple companies has given me a unique perspective I will bring to NIS Board. Over the last few months, I have been lucky enough to be coopted to the board, sitting in on the Finance Committee and I realize that this is a great opportunity as a board member to better serve the school community focusing on its mission and strategy in order to ensure our children have the highest quality of education and best learning environment, whilst tackling fiscal challenges and representing diverse interests.
I would like to thank you all in advance for your vote and I will strive to serve the NIS community better.
WU HAO
Nationality: Chinese
Nanjing since: 2012
Employment: BASF-YPC Company Limited
Children at NIS: in Grade 6
It would be an honor and a humbling one to serve on the NIS Board. I am employed by BASF China and delegated to Nanjing, where our joint venture with Sinopec is located. I graduated from Shanghai Chemical Institute and have a MBA degree from Tongji University. I have 20 years experiences in chemical industry and have worked on management positions for BASF in Germany and Hongkong before coming to Nanjing. I am very much interested on joining the NIS board and commit myself to be an effective member. Specifically, I would complement NIS board with more, deeper local insight and oriental perspectives. I look forward to your support and thank you for any trust put on me.
Since moving to Nanjing, I have become part of the community here with both the Nationals and Expats. Through relationships with families in the community I became aware of NIS and developed a relationship with both families and faculty. Over the past two years I have worked with the PTA on many projects as well as provided services to the school through Iced Baking.
I feel that my experience and background in accounting, business, and the education of underserved women and at risk youth would greatly benefit the NIS School Board. Because I have a passion for China and a passion for youth, my desire is to see the families that live in Nanjing connect and develop a community that thrives rather than survives. I would love to see the Expat Community engage with the Chinese Community and, in doing so, assist in the education and development of their children.

MIRELLA SAVEGNAGO
I was in the Board of NIS for the past 2 years and the reason I am standing again for another term is continuity and competence. In fact one of the special challenges that international school boards face is high turnover which makes it difficult to maintain the focus. Another challenge is to recognize and value the cultural diversity present in the school. Honoring these differences, while upholding the school's vision and mission, requires sensitivity and knowledge of the processes and procedures. That needs time to be acquired. My next term should be the one where I can give most.
I am passionate about communication, about getting in touch with people from all countries, about excellent education and a fulfilled life for our kids.
I moved to China from my home town Milano in 2011 and I plan to stay in Nanjing longer. My older son is studying in Milano. My daughter Arianna is a student at NIS in grade 11th and an avid volleyball player. My husband of 28 years, Francesco, works in Nanjing for SAES, a fully owned Italian company.
I worked 17 years in multinationals in marketing and management and 11 years for a Charity fostering HIV positive children. My education includes a master degree in education and psychology, a master in marketing and a 3 years master in counseling.
Since 2012, I work in Nanjing for the European Chamber of Commerce. This experience provides me further and broader insights about the challenges of the expatriate community in Nanjing.

PYP Playground (Courtyard) Closure!!The IB Diploma exams run for three weeks between May 5-May 23. This year, due to limited space because of our expansion projects, the IB Exams are held in the MYP LGR. Experience during the mock exams showed us this area can be particularly noisy after school. For these reasons the PYP playground (PYP Courtyard) will be closed after school during these dates between 3:00 pm (2:30 on Tuesdays) and 5:00 pm. Please be aware children can still use the big climbing frame area.!Many thanks for your understanding.

CLASS of 2014
So you are accepted, what now? As soon as universities send their letters of acceptance to you, be prompt in replying.
When you receive an acceptance from the school you wish to attend, follow their instructions re:
1. Payment of fees at specific times
2. Selecting courses for your freshman year
3. Housing reservations
4. Personal information data sheets
If the university does not require anything immediately, acknowledge the acceptance with a letter/email to the Director of Admissions thanking him/her for the attention given to you and saying that you are looking forward to attending the college.
At the same time, you must write to the other universities that accepted you. Thank them for their consideration and ask them to withdraw your name. You should explain that you have decided to attend another college and you should name the college you have chosen. (Universities are always interested in the competition.)
In withdrawing your name promptly, you are giving an acceptance possibility to another applicant who may have been placed on the waiting list.
The courtesy of notifying universities of your plans is a very important phase of the application process. It should be completed as carefully and accurately as the activities that preceded it.

ACAMIS FOOTBALL 2014NIS CHAMPIONS
Last week from the 24th to 26th of April the NIS Girls ACAMIS team played a phenomenal tournament, on our home pitch. The tournament was kicked off with a fantastic game on Thursday evening, with a final score of 5:0, in which Hannah Newell scored 4 wonderful goals. This game set the tone for the tournament, in which we were undefeated throughout the group phase, making it to the semi finals in first place. Showing our strength once again we took control of the game after a penalty scored by Tyra finally winning the game 6:1. The team moved to the final with a positive attitude and we really played our hearts out leaving everything on the pitch. Taking first place in a close 2:1 game.
In the tournament we remained undefeated throughout all 7 games, playing 6 wins and 1 draw. All together we scored 19 goals while only having 3 scored against us. Some highlights of the tournament were Elena, Michelle and Sophie’s strong and impenetrable defense, Tyra’s grit and determination, Solange and Gloria’s determination to never stay on the floor after being knocked down, Kyana’s energy and determination, Freja’s ability to control her anger, after being hit in the face numerous times by the ball, and channel it into her game, Hannah N’s speed, marking and beautiful goals, Paola’s support, communication and saves, Hannah Gusten’s headers (two of which went in the net) and Jayla’s corners (one curved beautifully in without touching another player).
Overall the tournament was a great success, being the first time in many years the girls brought home first place trophy, and being at home in front of a wonderful and supportive crowd made the experience even more special and emotional for us. To top it all off we also received the sportsmanship award.Thank you to our coaches, manager and everyone who supported us. GO LIONS!

Charity Tournament at SSISOn Saturday April 25th, NIS badminton traveled to Suzhou for a tournament hosted by Suzhou Singapore International School. The tournament was unusual because students organized the tournament and used the tournament fee to raise funds for an orphanage in South Africa that the school supports.
The tournament included 8 teams and the NIS teams were unique in that they included four grade eleven students, ten grade nine students and two grade eight students.
The coaches felt like this was a good chance to let some younger players participate in a competition as a reward for their hard work in practice.

One of the NIS teams happened to win the tournament and Hyunuk ( boys singles), Marla and Isinsu ( girls doubles) and Derron and Nahyun ( mixed doubles) all went undefeated on the day. Raphael and Dina also performed very well as a mixed doubles team.
Despite the success of the NIS players, the real stars of the tournament were the SSIS students who organized and ran the tournament.

Technical Rehearsal:Thursday, May 8th from 3:15 - 5:15
Dear Parents,
We are all very excited about the upcoming Music Evening, on Friday May 9, 2014. The students have been working very hard during their clubs to put together great performances for your enjoyment. On this evening, we typically have close to 200 students performing!
Drumming Clubs * Intermediate Orchestra * Grade 9 Band * Grade 10 Band * Nanjing Singers * Rock Bands * PYP Choir * Soloists * Guitar Club * Small Ensembles * Advanced Orchestra
Organising so many students takes a great deal of coordination and efficiency, two things made possible by a technical rehearsal.
Technical Rehearsal We will be having our technical rehearsal on May 8th from 3:15 - 5:15p.m. It’s vitally important that your child attends so that they know when they are performing, how to walk on stage, where they will be sitting, which microphones they will be using, etc.
Here is some helpful information:1) Students will be excused from their other clubs and activities; however, they are free to return to their other commitments as soon as their part in the tech rehearsal is finished;2) Please ensure your child has transportation home;3) Have your child bring snacks and a drink to the rehearsal;4) Tech rehearsals can be very boring! Your child should bring a book, some homework, or a laptop to pass the time until they go on-stage;5) Older students may be missing their CISSA and ACAMIS practices, so they must let their coaches know they will either be late or not attending; students involved in sports should wear their team jerseys so they can return quickly to their activities.
Dress Code:This is a formal evening and everyone is expected to look their best. Please have your children dress in nice black & white clothes. This means a collared shirt, black trousers, and/or a skirt. Some of the boys have suits, which will be great to see! Students should have plain, black shoes. Please, no jeans or running shoes.
Performance Evening Details:Students should be at school at the following times:! Singers - 6:30 p.m.! Instrumentalists - 6:15 p.m.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms Bonnie ([email protected]) or Miss Keus ([email protected]) for more information.

!!!!!!!!!!!Education a Gift for Life!!
Pfrang Gala!!On Saturday May 17th 2014 from 7p.m. the Pfrang Association will be hosting the 14th Annual Pfrang Gala at Nanjing International School. This event is one of the highlights of the expatriate social calendar in Nanjing and attracts over 300 people for an evening of fun and fundraising. !!All the money raised on the night allows the Pfrang Association to provide scholarships to cover the 6 year High School education of needy students in rural Jiangsu and Anhui provinces. Since its founding 14 years ago the Pfrang Association has provided more than 700 students the!opportunity to go to school. The Gala plays a vital role in allowing us to provide the lifelong gift of education to children who would other wise be denied the educational opportunities so many of us take for granted.!!It will be an amazing night for the community to come together to eat great food, dance to great live music and support a great cause. !!Thanks to our sponsors there are some incredible raffle prizes available including an iPhone donated by China Mobile and a return flight to Hong Kong donated by Dragon Air. If you or your company would like to donate further prizes or sponsor any aspect of the event please contact the Pfrang Association.!!Tickets are available in school from Sandra Fuchs in her office on the second floor of the Centre.!!Come along, bring all your friends and have a great night for a great cause.!!For more information contact: [email protected]!
